Linda was born to Edwin Griffith and Caroline (Radke) Griffith-Siberz on July 28th, 1947. Linda was united in marriage to James M. Baumgarten on June 13, 1970 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Baraboo.

Linda was the oldest of 10 siblings which was quite a responsibility. She was a very loving and generous sister and always set a good example.

Linda attended grade school at St. Joseph School in Baraboo and graduated from Baraboo Senior High School in the class of 1965. After graduation, Linda went on to earn her master’s degree in Elementary Education from the UW-Platteville. Her first teaching experience was in the Racine Unified Schools where she taught for three years. In 1970 she moved back to Baraboo and taught at her alma mater, St. Joesph School. Linda was a very dedicated teacher and taught at St. Joseph School for 43 years. She taught three generations of students, and mentored some of her fellow teachers, who themselves were her previous students. Linda was awarded the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award in Education. In addition, Linda was a member of the UW-Extension - Home and Community Education.

Linda was a woman of great faith and spent much of her time volunteering in her faith community. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Church where she was on the Parish Council, Vice President of the Catholic Council of Women, member of St. Martha’s Lunch group, and check writer for Crew 5 Bingo for thirteen years. Linda was a Master Gardener and took much pride in planting and caring for the flower boxes at the church/school.

Linda and her husband Jim owned and operated Freedom Inn in North Freedom, WI for 11 years. Together they enjoyed going to their lake home on Callahan Lake near Hayward. Many memories were made at the lake house, playing cards and games with family and friends. Linda was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 172, volunteered for the Sauk County Children’s Giving Tree, and was the lucky winner of Super Bowl XXXII tickets to watch her loved Green Bay Packers.

Linda was preceded in death by Jim, her loving husband of 41 years, her parents, Edwin Griffith and Caroline Griffith Siberz, her mother and father-in-law Shirley and Oscar Baumgarten; brothers-in-law Patrick Zimmerman and Ralph Luther.

Linda is survived by her step-father Raymond Siberz, siblings, John Griffith, Rose (Gary) Douglas, Mary (Mitchell) Schmieder, Connie Griffith, Nancy (Ken) Ender, Jeffrey Griffith, Judy Gaffney, Lisa Zimmerman, Jim Griffith. Sisters-in-law, Shari Luther and Jacki (Gary) Crawford, brother-in-law, Dan Baumgarten. Many loved nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as, her Four-Star family.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Joseph Church in Baraboo on Thursday, July 3, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. with Visitation at 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in North Freedom.

Ed is survived by three children, Linda (Earl) Hinderman and Ray Kunkel, both of Cuba City, WI, and Rod (Janet) Kunkel, Worthington, IA; three step-grandsons; a sister, Judy (Don) Takes; a brother, Randy (Kim) Kunkel; a sister-in-law, Shirley Puls; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma Kunkel; brothers and sisters; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

He was born on June 1, 1930 to John and Bertha (Beer) Wankerl. He graduated from St. Luke High School, Plain, in 1948 spending his freshman year at St. Nazianz Seminary near Manitowoc, WI. Joe married Lucille Lechner 73 years ago on April 29, 1952 and raised 6 children; Ken, Fr. Gary, LuAnn, Dan, Mary and Beth.

Together they farmed and operated the JKL True Value Hardware Store in Plain. After Joe was done farming, he worked for Banker’s Life selling insurance. Joe also served on the St. Luke Parish Council as President for 2 terms and 19 years on the Sauk County Farm Bureau. In 1968 he was appointed to serve on the UW Baraboo Campus Commission. He was the Chairperson of the Board until retiring in 2004 and was awarded an Honorary Associate of Arts and Science Degree in 2007. He was a member of St. Luke Choir for over 50 years and played tuba for the Plain Hot Shots. As a first generation American he loved returning to Bavaria, Germany and keeping up family ties speaking the local German dialect he learned from his father. He enjoyed flying a plane in the local flying club and fishing in the pond he built on his second farm in 1963. In his final years he wove baskets and shared them with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille; brother, Anthony Wankerl, Sauk City and sister Delores Sunder, greater Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN; his children, Ken (Renee), North Freedom, WI, Fr. Gary, Dodgeville, WI, LuAnn, Lake Forest, CA, Dan (Jo Husom), Plain, WI, Mary (Mark) Peck, Spring Green, WI, son-in-law, Meikel Nagel, Anthem, AZ; 6 grandchildren, Tonia Greenwood, Shaun Murray, Colin (Caitlin) and Taylor Friedman, Garrett (Jennette) and Nathan Peck; 6 great-grandchildren and sisters-in-law, Irene (Don) Ragatz and Doris (Bob) Hayes.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Beth; grandson, Tully; brothers, Ed, John, Louis; and his sisters, Marie Vogt, Florence Durst, Rose Ruhland and Dorothy Anderson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Luke Church, Plain with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will take place at the church on Monday, August 11 from 9:30 A.M. – 11:00 A.M.

She worked at General Dry Battery in Dubuque, she then worked at Loud Speaker Components, Lancaster for 21 years retiring in 1995. She was a member of First English Lutheran Church, Platteville. She enjoyed being outdoors, tending to her flowers and yard.

She is survived by her son, Larry (Joan Droessler) Swart of Platteville; two grandsons, Jason (Nicole White) Swart of Colfax, WI; Logan (Elli) Swart of Milton, WI; two great-granddaughters, Morgan and Mila; niece, Mary Lou Pierce of Rice Lake, WI; and special friends, Diana Kitto of Lancaster and Judie Bellmeyer of Platteville. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, Viola Kitto, Luella Eggers and Marcella Lawrence.

Death20 November 2014Carolyn Matthews died on 20 November 2014 at age 93 Carolyn passed on peacefully of old age on Thursday morning, November 20, 2014, at the age of 93 at Pacifica Senior Living in Tucson, AZ. She suffered from dementia for the last 10 years, and was out of contact with practically everyone except her daughter Joy, who was caring for her. All her grandchildren were able to spend time with her during her last days.

She was born September 15, 1921, on the family farm near Platteville, WI, the youngest of three children to Charles Matthews and Elberta Matthews (VanNatta). Both she and her future husband played in the Platteville High School Band.

On December 24, 1942 she married Elmer H. Kettler in Spartansburg, NC, were he was completing Army Basic Training. He had been drafted following Pearl Harbor, and the war transplanted the family to Falls Church, VA, where both were founding members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and where both sang in the church choir. Elmer (1919-1979) was a member of the United States Army Band at Fort Myer, VA, from 1942-1969. The family lived in McLean, Virginia, from 1952-1969, and then retired to a small farm near Broadway, VA, just north of Harrisonburg. Both were members of Broadway Presbyterian Church (until Elmer passed on) where they again sang in the church choir. Carolyn was a public school teacher in the elementary grades in McLean.

After Elmer passed on she again taught public school (special education) in Rockingham County, VA. She assisted in the founding of the Broadway Public Library (now the Village Library). She also was a part-time volunteer library assistant in the Harrisonburg Public Library for many years. In 1979 she moved to Oro Valley, AZ, near Tucson, to be near her daughter Joy and her family. She was a member of the Oro Valley United Church, and created a library for her church. She also worked at the Nanini Branch Library in Tucson.

Carolyn is survived by her son Steven C. Kettler of Harrisonburg, VA, her daughter, Joy Kettler Gurgevich, and son-in-law, Steven Gurgevich of Tucson, AZ, and her daughter Lori E. Kettler, of Burlington, VT.

Carolyn is survived by four grandchildren (all Joy’s) and by two great grandchildren: her grandson, Matthew W. Shaughnessy and wife, Connie Caprari-Shaughnessy, of Henderson, NV, and their sons, Christian and Luca, her grandson, Brennan P. Shaughnessy, and his wife Rebecca Shaughnessy (Main), of Joshua Tree, CA, her granddaughter Meghann J. Anthony (Shaughnessy) and her husband, Nick Anthony, of Scottsdale, AZ, and her granddaughter Maeve A. Shaughnessy of Las Vegas, NV.

Carolyn was preceded in death by Elmer, her parents, and her siblings, Wendell Matthews of Madison, WI, and Ted Matthews of Madison, WI.
