She married Joseph Wankerl 73 years ago on April 29, 1952 and raised 6 children; Ken, Fr. Gary, LuAnn, Dan, Mary and Beth. Together they farmed and operated the JKL True Value Hardware Store in Plain. She and Joe served for 19 years on the Sauk County Farm Bureau. She was a local 4-H Club Leader for many years and assisted with countless programs at St. Luke School. She sang in the St. Luke Choir and played piano for her family entertainment. She was an accomplished seamstress sewing and mending clothes for her family and friends. Later in life she attended adult classes at River Valley High School honing her artistic abilities painting and making pottery. After retiring from work on the farms and the hardware store she worked part-time at Lands’ End in Dodgeville and began to weave rugs from worn blue jeans in her extensive home craft rooms.

Like her husband, she was a first generation American with her roots in Bavaria, Germany traveling often to Treffelstein and Waldmunchen where her father and family were born and lived.

She will be missed for her warm, calming and compassionate spirit; her gifts of faith in God and virtues of patience and love for her family and everyone she met.

She is survived by her children; Ken and (Renee) North Freedom, WI, Fr. Gary, Dodgeville, WI, LuAnn, Lake Forest, CA, Dan (Jo Husom) Plain, WI, Mary (Mark Peck), Township of Arena, WI, son-in-law, Meikel Nagel, Anthem, AZ, 6 grandchildren; Tonia Greenwood, Shaun Murray, Colin (Caitlin) Friedman, Taylor Friedman, Garrett (Jennette) Peck and Nathan Peck; 6 great-grandchildren and sisters; Irene (Don) Ragatz, Danbury, CT and Doris (Bob) Hayes, Prescott Valley, AZ and their families; brother-in-law Anthony Wankerl, Sauk City and sister-in-law Delores Sunder, greater Minneapolis St. Paul, MN.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, 4 months ago; her daughter Beth; grandson, Tully; brothers and sisters-in-law: Ed and June Wankerl, John and Rose Wankerl, Louis Wankerl, Alvin and Marie Vogt, Jerry and Florence Durst, Sylvester and Rose Ruhland, Dorothy Unger/ William Anderson, Lorraine Wankerl and Charles Sunder.

Darlene was born on March 31, 1939, in Richland Center, WI, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Gruber) Brummer.

Following graduation from Spring Green High School, she attended UW Platteville.

She was united in marriage to Howard “Howie” Murphy on September 26, 1959, and together they built a life centered around family, faith, and community.

Darlene dedicated herself first and foremost to her family as a loving homemaker and an amazing cook. She learned her culinary skills working alongside her grandmother Mary and mother Elizabeth. She was also known for her warm hospitality and delicious meals that brought everyone together. After raising her children, she worked for many years at the local community banks in Spring Green, where she was a friendly and familiar face to many in the community.

She was also a devoted coach’s wife, supporting Howie throughout his 28-year career coaching the River Valley football team while he taught at the high school. Whether cheering from the sidelines or helping behind the scenes, Darlene was a steady and encouraging presence in the lives of countless student-athletes and their families.

Darlene was a faithful member of St. John’s Catholic Church, where she found strength in her faith and fellowship.

She is survived by six children: Cindy (Jim) Liegel, Mike (Linda) Murphy, Dan (Judy) Murphy, Lisa (Ray) Wahl, Carleen (Tim) Humpal, and Karen (Dan) Hackl; grandchildren: Josh (Catrina) Wahl, Justin (Kaylee) Wahl, Shane (Kasie) Murphy, Taylor (Sarah) Murphy, Molly Liegel, Jenna (Joe) Richter, Shannon Murphy, Jordan (Stuart) Vanden Heuvel, Courtney Murphy, Kayla Hackl, Collin (Consuelo) Humpal, Adam Liegel, Jacob (Peyton) Hackl, Allison Humpal, and Sarah Hackl; 14 great-grandchildren; her two sisters Mary Jane Brummer and Barbara Brummer (Steve Zwettler); sisters-in-law Nancy Brummer and Carol Murphy; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Elizabeth Brummer; Her Loving Husband Howard Murphy, two brothers, William and Robert Brummer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Spring Green, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 13, 2025, at St. John’s Catholic Church from 4:00 P.M.–7:00 P.M., and again on Tuesday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of Mass.

He is survived by his sister Marge (Bud) Meyer and many nieces and nephews. Edward was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Mary Ellen Baumgarten, Evelyn Mikelson, Loran Gardner, and Robert Gardner.

A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held Tuesday, November 4, 2025 at 11:15 A.M. at St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in Loganville. Visitation will be held from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service at Grasse Funeral Home in Reedsburg. Luncheon to follow interment at the funeral home.

Judy resided at the Sauk County Health Care Center in Reedsburg and made many friends with the staff and residents that loved her. She will be remembered for her generosity, great sense of humor, her smile, and kind words to everyone. Judy will be dearly missed.

She was one of eight children. Her siblings were Carol, Linda, Butch, Greg, Sherry, Bill and Toby.

No formal services for Judy are scheduled at this time.
