Chester, aged 15 and Russell, age 13, sons of Chester Grooms, borrowed the Bill Mogle car parked on Main street Sunday and stated eastward for a ride.

Driving out on the former Sparks Springview highway and starting down the hill (Big Sandy), traveling supposedly at a high rate of speed, Paul, who was driving, lost control and the car went over the shoulder of the highway, turning over, so reports say, three or four times.

Some ladies in a passing auto rushed to the Sumner and Rockwell ranch for help and with the assistance of Dr. Sumner the two boys were extricated from the almost totally wrecked car and rushed to the hospital. The oldest boy, fatally injured, passed away a few hours later. The younger it is thought will recover.

The eighth grade of the local school, of which Paul was a member, was dismissed Wednesday afternoon to attend the funeral which was held from the M. E. Church, Rev. B. D. Hanscom, officiating.

Paul August Chester Grooms was born at Van Tassel, Wyoming, January 3rd, 1920, and departed this life at Valentine, Nebraska, April 29th, 1935 at the age of 15 years, 3 months and 25 days.

He was preceded in death by his mother who passed away ten years ago and by his grandmother, who mothered him after his mother's death, who passed away just a month ago.

During his early childhood he resided in Wyoming, Colorado and Oregon. He came with his parents to Nebraska in 1926 to reside at Valentine. Here he entered the public school and was at the time of his death a student in the eighth grade. He was baptized in the christian faith in infancy and was a member of the Valentine Methodist Episcopal Sunday School.

He leaves to mourn his untimely death, his father, Chester Grooms, one brother, Russel, on sister, Mae, and many relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. B. D. Hanscom at the Methodist Episcopal church, Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Interment was made in the Sparks Cemetery.

Sally passed away at Rock County Long Term Care Center in Bassett, NE at the age of 94 years, 7 months and 21 days.

Sally was raised in the Norden, NE area attending several country schools and graduating from Keya Paha County High School in Springview, NE in 1943. Sally greatly valued her education, knowing she wanted to be a teacher from a very early age; setting up “school” in her Grandparents yard teaching reading and sums to her dolls, teddy bear and dog Ring under the shade trees.

“Home” for her was at her Grandparents on their homestead south and west of Norden in the canyons. In grade school, she boarded in Norden where her Granddad would drive the team and wagon in to pick her up on Fridays and then take her back on Sunday evenings. She loved running to the window at Mrs. Petzels where she boarded, to watch “that boy riding fast and wild out of town on his big black horse” after school. “That boy” later became her husband.

During high school in Springview, her Granddad followed the same routine of dropping her off and picking her up only then it was with the Model T, weather permitting. During these years her Mother and Stepfather worked in Wichita, KS at the Boeing Airplane factory so her Grandparents had a very influential role in her life always, but especially during this time.

Upon graduation from high school, with a Normal Training Certificate which was good for three years, she taught the following school term in a country school northwest of Springview and continued to teach at other country schools in Keya Paha, Cherry and Brown counties for a total of fourteen years.

On May 28th, 1944, she was married to Howard Russell Grooms and continued to live in the Norden area where Russell ranched and Sally taught school. They had 55 years and 8 months of happiness until his passing in January of 2000. To this union was born a son, who died in infancy, and four daughters who she greatly adored: Rhonda (Ed) Kohel, Laurene (Gary) Munger, and twin girls Tammy (Jeff) Spies and Pam Petersen. In 1963 they adopted a son Charles.

Sally was a wonderful teacher, a loving rancher’s wife, a devoted Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. She enjoyed reading, going for walks on country roads, camping and traveling, but what she treasured more than anything else was time spent with her beloved family. Sally and Russell began pitching horseshoes in 1977 traveling throughout Nebraska, the United States and Canada to many tournaments, meeting many people from all over the world who become lifelong friends.

Sally was preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents, her brother who died in infancy, her husband Russell and their infant son, Howard Russell. She is survived by four daughters, one adopted son, twelve grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.

Ruth was buried in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Detroit, Mich., on April 14, 2004.

Memorial services were held in Kerrville at the Zion Lutheran Church, and Pastors David Chancellor, Will Bigott and Douglas McBride officiated. An eulogy was given by Ruth's nephew, Thomas Hilgendorf.

On September 8, 1979, Thomas was united in marriage to Charlotte Radke. The couple lived in Baraboo all of their life. Thomas worked at Darrows, Co-op Country Partners, Deppe Transport, and Blum's Excavating until he retired.
Thomas was in the National Guard for 21 years, Elks Member for 36 years, and North Freedom Legion for 18 years. He was well known for making jokes and kidding with people to make them laugh. He loved to go camping, play cards with the guys, socialize with friends, and enjoyed doing activities with his family.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Charlotte, of 44 years, Son: Jason (Kristy) Snyder of Baraboo, Daughter: Janelle (Russell) Balliet of Indianapolis. Thomas is further survived by a grandchild: Jolie Balliet and beloved dogs, Macy, Zoey, and KitKat. Thomas is survived by brothers: Bob (Emily) Bethke, James Bethke, and Jerry Bethke and sisters: Betty Alley, Mary (Ron) Hart, and Peggy (Ted) Miller and Honorary daughter Natalia (Jeremy) Smith and honorary grandson, Maksim Smith, as well as many other nephews, nieces, friends and co-workers.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Elsie Snyder, sisters-in-law, Nancy Bethke and Linda Bethke, nephews Robert Bethke Jr., Brad Zimmerman, and niece, Linda Richardson.
Funeral Service will be held Friday, October 6, 2023 with visitation from 10:00 am. to time of church service at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. Karen Hofstad officiating. Burial will follow at Walnut Hill Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life will be determined at a later date.

Alice was a talented drapery seamstress and contracted with several area furniture stores. She was a great mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be sadly missed by all. She is survived by her children, Russell (Nancy) Cornford, Randy (Cinda) Cornford, Robinlynn Fortier, Phillip (Penny) Ohlert and Brian (Rachel) Ohlert, 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister Mary Sue Picha and a son in law Andrew Fortier.

A private family memorial service is being planned at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel with interment at the Evergreen Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien.

He worked as an interior designer for Statz Home Furnishings and later sold drapery for the Countryside Workshop. Most recently Marty worked in mobile home sales.

He is survived by his wife Alice of Prairie du Chien, his children, Russell (Nancy) Cornford of Coon Valley, Randy (Cinda) Cornford of Prairie du Chien, Robinlynn (Andrew) Fortier of North Freedom, WI, Phillip (Penny) Ohlert and Brian (Rachel) Ohlert both of Prairie du Chien, his sister Lee (Don) Gordon of Marquette, IA, 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Bruce Ohlert.

A memorial visitation will be Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel in Prairie du Chien. Military honors will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard. A private family inurnment will be later in the Evergreen Cemetery in Prairie du Chien.
