Earl Francis Thurtell The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900, the 1963 ThurtellFamily History, and the History of the Thurtell Family done by SusanPersia Thurtell about 1968, all in possession of Susan Persia ThurtellMiller show Earl Thurtell died at 21 and had married Gertrude and thatthey may have had a daughter. The 1900 U.S. Census soundex for Illinois (Vol. 28, E.D. 280, Sheet 14,Line 49) shows Earl H. Thurtell, age 11, born in Michigan in December1888, was living with his parents, Alfred and Olive H. Thurtell, at 918South Spaulding Avenue, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. His marriage certificate number 536199 from the Cook County Clerk,Chicago, Illinois, shows that Earl F. Thurtell, age 21, was married toGertrude Louise Danne, age 20, at Rogers Park, Chicago, Cook County,Illinois on June 8, 1910, by George B. Pratt, Priest of the P. EpiscopalChurch. The birth certificate of his daughter, Lois Louise Thurtell, shows that his name was Earl Francis Thurtell, born in Marquette,Michigan, and deceased at the time the child was born in Chicago, CookCounty, Illinois on April 23, 1912. No announcement of their marriagewas found in the 'Chicago Daily Tribune' in 1910, but few marriageannouncements appeared in this newspaper and virtually no birthannouncements. Records of Montrose Cemetery, 5400 North Pulaski, Chicago, Illinois60630, 773-478-5400, show Alfred Thurtell was buried there on July 18,1922, in Lot 201, Woodlawn Section. Buried in the same lot are EarlFrancis Thurtell, who was buried October 12, 1911; Olive (Hall) Thurtell, buried October 1, 1931; Charles K. Daly, buried March 5, 1920; and LydiaCaroline Daly, buried May 8, 1914. Chicago records show only that EarlThurtell died in North Carolina. In 1911 North Carolina death recordswere kept only at the county level, not at the state level. No death notice was found for Earl Thurtell in the microfilm records ofthe 'Chicago Daily Tribune' of October 1-15, 1911. Chicago newspapersduring the past century publish only a very few obituaries each day andpaid death notices for some of the people who died in the area, but nomention of the deaths of many Chicago residents appears in the localnewspapers. There is an microfilmed index card on file at the National Archives,Chicago Region, in the General Pension Index microfilm series for Earl F.Thurtell. His particular card (unlike most of the others) is very darkand extremely hard to read. It shows that Earl F. Thurtell was a Seamanwith the names Franklin and Mayflower the only legible items listed underhis service. The pension index card shows he filed for an invalidpension on March 17, 1911, and the state from which he filed wasIllinois. The application number appears to be 1395935, and thecertificate number is illegible. The card shows he died in October 1911and that his widow, Gertrude L. Thurtell, filed for a widow's pension onNovember 1, 1911, from the state of Illinois. The application numberlooks like 974295, and the certificate number is illegible. A claim fortheir minor child, Lois Louise Thurtell, was filed later - the filingdate looks like November 27, 1918, and the application number could be7131856 or possibly 9131856. The certificate number is illegible, butthis claim was also filed from Illinois. The Chicago Regional Office of the Department of Veterans Affairs, 536South Clark, Chicago, Illinois 60680, in December 1999 confirmed that norecord could be located for Earl Thurtell with the information that couldbe read from the index card record.

Dad was going nite and day making as many as 60 calls intwenty-four hours - many in a horse and cutter - attending the sick.Interestingly the epidemic was worldwide; people were sometimes only illfor 24 hours before they died. Their lungs would fill up with secretionsand they would drown in their own fluids. There has never been anythinglike it, before or since. Be that as it may, Aunt Helen was a brave, strong young woman who had survived typhoid fever a few years before inWest Virginia, in which Cousin Helen died. She came willingly, withoutthought of herself, and nursed the three of us back to health and keptthe household going. I will never forget the night she came, by train toSouth Bend, the interurban to Berrien Springs - Dad carrying her bag fromthe station as the snow was deep and cars were not moving. She was theshining light of our family that nite and since.'
