It is interesting thathis brewery was on the former site of the Lowestoft China Factory. Theyhad no children.

E.Number 8705. She made her settlement on this land and erected a houseand then learned that the exact same property had been granted as ahomestead on August 22, 1904, H. E. Number 8661, to a Martha Berkvam.Olive Thurtell was then approved after delays lasting several months fora second homestead since she had had to relinquish the first one. Her homestead affidavit signed October 30, 1905,showed she was Olive E. Thurtell of Sturgis, So. Dak., over 21 years ofage and a single woman. She signed the registry return receipt fordelivery of paperwork on March 15, 1906, as Olive E. Thurtell, and beganliving on her homestead in March 1906, with a home built on the land atthat time. She apparently married Charles E. Thomas shortly afterwards,and he moved to her homestead, giving up the homestead claim he hadpreviously filed himself. Olive Thurtell Thomas died in 1906 per familyrecords. The paperwork completed in 1911 by Charles E. Thomas as theheir of Olive E. Thurtell showed that he had continued living at thehomestead after the death of his wife, Olive, and that as of November 15,1911, he was married with three children. The same affidavit showed thathe was age 36, with a post office address of Vale, South Dakota, and thathe was born in Maine. By 1911 he had about 110 acres of the land untercultivation and improvements valued at $1500. The land patent number273698 was finally approved June 11, 1912. The afffidavits to supportCharles Thomas' claim were all completed on November 15, 1911, in Newell,Butte County, South Dakota, within the Belle fourche land district, thenearest and most accessible qualified officer in the district in whichthe land is located. The file also contains the affidavit of PeterFelion, age 57, of Vale, South Dakota, who lived on the adjoining landand confirmed that he had known Charles Thomas for about 5 1/2 years andthe land for 25 years and confirmed that the original entrywoman was deadand that her husband, Charles Thomas, had not been absent from thehomestead and had over 100 acres under cultivation, and that he was notrelated to the claimant. An affidavit from John S. McGill, age 55 years,of Vale, South Dakota, confirmed he lived on the land just across theroad and that he had known the claimant and the land about six years andthat Charles Thomas had about 100 acres under cultivation and that he wasnot related to the claimant. Jane Ward advised in January 2000 that her records showed that OliveThurtell was born October 6, 1879, in Lewisburg, Meade County, Wisconsin,and died October 9, 1906. This record of hers listed no sources.Lewisburg, Wisconsin, is in Grant County, Wisconsin, and is probablywhere she was born. Meade County, South Dakota, is where she died. Shealso advised that she showed that Olive's grandson was the personal pilotto the governor of South Dakota. Their Meade County, South Dakota, marriage certificate shows Olive E.Thurtell (shown also as Olive B Thurtell in the same document), age 28,and Charles E. Thomas, age 30, both of Sturgis, Meade County, SouthDakota, were married December 28, 1905, in Sturgis by a minister, J. S.Dimwitt (that's what the last name looks like, but it could be Dimmitt orsomething similar). Witnesses were Mary M. Newell and D. J. Newell.They got their license December 27, 1905, and the record was filedJanuary 6, 1906. Her death certificate confirms Olive E. Thomas, a married white femaleage 28, died October, 9, 1906, in Sturgis, Meade County, South Dakota.The cause of death was Puerperal Eclampia. The medical certifier was J.H. Naftzger, MD, and the death certificate was filed November 1, 1906, onPage 1, Book A, in Meade County, South Dakota. There is no record of a baby born to Olive and Charles Thomas on file ineither Meade County or at the state office based on a search done inJanuary and February 2000. However, the cause of death almost certainlymeans Olive had a baby. During the 1999 Thurtell Family Reunion Frank Thurtell's daughters, Dorothy Thurtell Richardson, and May Thurtell Thomas, advised that Frank and his second wife, Mary May Thurtell, separated about 1927 or 1928 in Jefferson, South Dakota. May Annabelle Thurtell May Thurtell Thomas provided information about herself and her descendants, her brother, and her parents at the 1999 Thurtell Family Reunion in Cleveland, New York. Her sister, Dorothy Richardson, and daughter, Roberta Thomas Knapp, also attended, along with several of Dorothy Richardson's descendants. May recalled that her parents had separated when she was only about two years old. She had moved with her mother and siblings to Nebraska on March 19, 1930, the birthday of her brother, George Thurtell. She had helped on the farm her mother rented and operated in Nebraska. In a December 1999 letter May Thomas recalled that she was not sure where her parents met. Her older siblings Dorothy and George were both born in Missouri where their parents had a farm. She was born in Jefferson, South Dakota, and was pretty sure that was where her parents went when they left Missouri. She advised that she and her husband, Virgil Thomas, lived on a farm, which was owned by the man for whom her husband worked. After her husband's death, May and her children moved back with her mother and brother until her son, Virgil, was about six months old. She then moved back to Lebanon, Nebraska, and did housework for the family for whom her husband had worked until her son Virgil was about 1 1/2. At that time her half brother's wife died leaving him with four small children. She then shared a home with her half brother, who worked in a hay mill and provided the food while she kept house and took care of the six children. They all moved to California in 1956, but her half brother did not like it there and moved back to Nebraska. May had a job at a precision drill factory, where she stayed for 12 1/2 years, and then got a job at Centinela Hospital in 1969. She worked there until her retirement in 1990. After two years of retirement she decided she was too 'healthy to just sit around so asked them for part time work and they said sure. It's almost full time now but hopefully they will get more hired so I can work a little less.'

The census record itself is found on Page 11, SD2, ED 175, which is available in image form online in the Ancestry.com library as of June 2001. This shows Walt Thurtell was living in the 4thWard in the city of Dubuque on 5th Street as a boarder in the boardinghouse of William and Josee Kimes. Also living there was Milton Speer, another boarder, whose occupation is shown as an editor. The marital status column for both of them was left blank, as were the columns for the places of birth of their parents, along with those of most of the other boarders. The additional fact that the place of birth for Walt Thurtell is shown as New York is a strong indication that the information was provided by the Kimes family for all the boarders. Emma Bechtel is found in Dubuque living with her parents and siblings in the 1880 U.S.Census (Page 185A, or Page 33, SD 2, ED 174) on Washington Street. He is listed with five lodgers, and the field of the census showing whether he owned or rented his home was left blank. He was enumerated with Henry Bridge, but his relationship is shown as boarder. Henry and Mary J. Bridge must have had a boarding house, since there are eleven boarders listed as living with their family. Frederick Thurthell is shown as single, with his father born in England and his mother in North Carolina, with his occupation shown as day laborer. The census shows he is able to speak, read, and write English. The soundex for this census listing showed his name as Frederick Thurthill, but the census clearly shows the last name as Thurthell. He is listed as Fred W. Thurtell, age 65, born in Wisconsin, living alone in Sumas, Whatcom County, Washington, in the 1920 U.S. Census Soundex forWashington (Volume 49, ED 266, Sheet 7, Line 100). In August or September 1907, Harriet Cattnach had gone to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she was told she had cancer and might live a year. She died December 30,1907, in her husband's arms in their home, and Amy was present at the time. She was buried in Olds on January 1, 1908, and the hymn 'What a Friend We Have in Jesus' was sung at her funeral. Dorothy Thurtell and Carl Henry Richardson were married by Judge Sandallat the Court House in North Platte, Lincoln County, Nebraska on September 11, 1937, according to information received from Jane Ward in 1997. She and her husband lived at 423 Stageline Road, Oroville, California, from about 1976 until 1996. Dorothy Richardson attended the 1999 Thurtell Family Reunion in Cleveland, New York, and provided a great deal of information about her descendants. She stated she had eight children, 29 grandchildren, 64great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren as of August 1999. She keeps birthday and anniversary lists and a book on all her family members and can remember where virtually all of them were born and married. Grandchildren and great grandchildren become part of her extended family immediately, regardless of whether their relationship to her is based on their birth or the marriage of their parent to one of her descendants. She sometimes uses a cane and is bothered by arthritis, but her memory as of August 1999 is outstanding. In a March 2000 e-mail her daughter, Jane Ward, recalled that Dorothy and Carl Richardson enjoyed square dancing and round dancing and belonged to several clubs, dancing sometimes as often as three times a week. An e-mail from Jane Ward on July 24, 2000, advised that Dorothy Richardson had suffered a heart attack but had been released from the hospital and was back living with her sister, May Thurtell Thomas. She advised that Dorothy had suffered congestive heart failure, pulmonary edema, and heart muscle damage complicated by renal degradation.
