Francis Thurtell The History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about1968 shows that Francis Thurtell came to America in 1834 and settled inGuelph, Ontario, Canada. He was a miller in Ontario, a farmer nearTraverse City, Michigan, and a realtor in Traverse City. It was actually probably the spring of 1835 before Francis Thurtell, his siblings, andhis father emigrated from England to Canada. His mother, Anne BarberThurtell, and his paternal grandmother, Anne Browne Thurtell, had bothdied in September 1834. A tree done by his sister, Harriett Thurtell, shows they emigrated to Canada in 1835. Land records show his fatherpurchased his farm in December 1835. George William Thurtell has a diaryshowing the Thurtell family was in Guelph as early as August 1835. Information received from Charlotte Angst Mackie in 1997 shows thatduring the years 1857-1858 Francis Thurtell operated a lath, picket, andplaning machine in Rockwood, near Guelph, Ontario. Following thatFrancis Thurtell and William Farrish ran a mill in Rockwood, where theymade flour and oatmeal. This firm dissolved partnership, with FrancisThurtell and his wife selling to William Farrish in August 1863. Theirson Henry was born in Rockwood in 1865. The 'Directory of the Province of Ontario 1857' by Thomas B. Wilson andEmily S. Wilson (Hunterdon House, Lambertville, NJ, 1987) shows that the1857 Canada Directory by John Lovell listed Francis Thurtell of Rockwood,Wellington County, Ontario, Canada, as in the 'lath, picket and planingmachines' business. Family Tree Maker's Family Archive CD 255 (copyright 1996 by BroderbundSoftware, Inc.) shows that U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of LandManagement records filed at the Traverse City, Michigan, Land Office showFrancis Thurtell purchased 25.35 acres in Michigan on July 1, 1869, inSection 28, Township 28 North, Range 13 West, of the Michigan PrincipalMeridian (Volume 2420, Page 189, Document 3616, Aliquot Part Reference4). He obtained an additional 160.00 acres on February 10, 1873, as aHomestead Entry located in Section 28, Township 28 North, Range 13 West.of the Michigan Principal Meridian (Volume 2480, Page 403, Document 900,Aliquot Part Reference SE, Miscellaneous Document Number 1554). The book 'Old Settlers of the Grand Traverse Region,' by S. E. Wait, which was orginally published in Traverse City, Michigan, in 1918, listsMr. and Mrs. Francis Thurtell as members of the Old Settlers Associationand shows they moved to the Grand Traverse Region in 1866. The homestead records on file at the National Archives in Washington, DC,include the homestead claims file for Francis Thurtell finalized February10, 1873, certificate number 900, application number 1554. This file isalso indexed with a copy of the land patent in the Bureau of LandManagement, Eastern States, internet site athttp://www.glorecords.blm.gov. An affidavit in the file shows thatFrancis Thurtell was the head of a family with a wife and seven childrenand a U.S. citizen as of May 7, 1872. He was residing at the south east1/4, Section 28, Township 28N, Range 13, where he had begun living onDecember 20, 1865. He had built a log house with a story and a half, aboard floor, shingle roof, three doors, and five windows. He hadcultivated about 35 acres of this land, with one acre more chopped, builta log barn, and also had sixty fruit trees. Thomas and William Armstrongsigned an affidavit with this information for his homestead file on May7, 1872. Francis Thurtell then obtained 160 acres in the south east 1/4of Section 28, Township 28N, Range 13W, in Leelanau County, Michigan, under the Homestead Act. An affidavit is also in this file signed byFrancis Thurtell at the Land Office in Traverse City, Michigan, datedDecember 19, 1865, showing that he had filed his application 1554 forhomestead property and that he had declared his intention to become acitizen of the United States on that form. The records for his original land purchase of 25.35 acres, Lot Number 4,in Section 28, Township 28N, Range 13W, in Leelanau County, Michigan(document number 3616), show that he paid $1.25 per acre, or a total of$31.69, with the payment made in Traverse City, Michigan, on August 24,1867. The land patent was finalized for this purchase on July 1, 1869,according to the Bureau of Land Management Records, which are availableon the internet at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov. A visit to the area of the Thurtell farm in May 1999 showed there was anold barn still standing on the interior of the parcel, complete with twoantique-style lightening rods. A tiny house, possibly a mobile home, quite hidden from the road, was also there, surrounded by what appear tobe future Christmas trees. There was a lake on the property calledThurtell Lake on an old map, Turtle Lake on another map which was acounty soil survey, and Polack Lake on more recent maps. Both theThurtell and Hall lands were still largely under cultivation in 1999. Oviatt was the nearest settlement to the Thurtell and Hall farms.Armstrong School (School Number 5), built in 1874, was about one-fourthmile west of the Thurtell farm. The 1870 U.S. Census for Kasson Township, Leelanau County, Michigan, pages 7 and 8, lists Francis and Amelia Thurtell and their family. ThePost Office on the census page shows Traverse City, Michigan, whichapparently served areas in both Leelanau County and Grand Traverse Countyat that time. Francis Thurtell is shown as a white male, age 39, who wasa farmer with real estate valued at $2000 and personal estate valued at$525. It shows he was born in England and that both his parents were offoreign birth. It confirms, as does her birth certificate, that theiroldest daughter, Louisa, was born in Massachusetts. It shows his wifeand children Edward, Alfred, Walter, Herbert, and Henry were born inCanada, but their daughter Ellen, age 2, was born in Michigan. The 1880 U.S. Census for Kasson Township, Leelanau County, Michigan, ED159, SD 2, page 10, enumerated June 8-9, 1880, shows Francis Thurtell asa farmer, age 49, born in England, with both of his parents born inEngland. Joshua Hall and his family are shown on thesame census page as the Thurtell family in both the 1870 and 1880 censusrecords. Joshua Hall's adopted daughter, Mary Agnes Hall, married WalterThurtell. A notice in the 'Grand Traverse Herald' in May 1889 showed that 'FrancisThurtell moves this week to Glen Arbor, to take charge of the Kelderhousemills, for the summer.' On September 5, 1889, a notice in the 'Grand Traverse Herald' underOviatt showed that 'Mrs. F. Thurtell and Mrs. Wm. Armstrong went over tovisit Mr. Thurtell at Glen Arbor, one day last week.' The copy of Harriet Thurtell's tree in Susan Miller's possession is nearly illegible regarding Anne (or Annie Elizabeth) Cooper. It shows she married B. McMillen and later Palacios. She had three children, according to the tree. One, whose name is illegible but may be Lena, married; but the spouse's name is also illegible - it looks like Posh Nalt or Halt. Another of her children appears to be Hannah, and the third is Charles. It appears all three of these children were by Bernard McMillen, but it is impossible to be sure.

Alexander Thurtell Brown The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900, the 1963 ThurtellFamily History, and the History of the Thurtell Family done by SusanPersia Thurtell about 1968 show Alexander Thurtell Brown was in Acton,Ontario, Canada. Additional information was received from Charlotte Angst Mackie in 1997. Information found on the internet on April 16, 2001, linked to the website at http://archeion-aao.fis.utoronto.ca/titles.html for the Archivesof Ontario showed that Alexander Thurtell Brown was an Acton, Ontario, pharmacist and stationer who was also an amateur photographer. There isa collection in the Archives of Ontario called the Alexander ThurtellBrown fonds. The index found shows that the creator was AlexanderThurtell Brown, and the material dates from about 1890 to about 1920 andconsists of 2321 photographs: prints and negatives and .5 cm of textualrecords. The reference number is C 302. The fonds consists of glassplate negatives, lantern slides, celluloid negatives, prints and textualmaterial produced by A.T. Brown. Subject material of the fonds pertainsprimarily to events, scenes and people of Acton, Ontario, ca. 1890-1920.The fonds includes 1,604 glass plate negatives, featuring informalportraits of local people as well as photographs of houses, buildings, mills, factories, local churches, the Acton railway station, bridges, structure fires, outdoor activities, a Native Indian encampment, localmilitary groups, a train wreck, ships, ferries, local events such asparades, and sporting events and groups. As well, there are photographsof Toronto, including the Second Great Fire of Toronto of 1904, as wellas scenes from rural areas and the area known as Cottage Country. Accessto a number of the glass plate negatives is restricted due to theirfragile condition. There are no access restrictions with regards to theremainder of the fonds. Copyright restrictions for these materials haveexpired. Permission of the Archives of Ontario is required forpublication. Inventory is available for this fonds. The Archives ofOntario acquired the fonds from Dills Printing and Publishing Co. in twoaccessions, in 1972 and in 1989. Dills Printing Company had acquired thefonds at an unknown date in order to preserve the fonds. The consistencyof photographic format, style, and subject; concentration on localsubjects; the inclusion of various photographs documenting Brown's familyand store; and the survival of two photographers' notebooks indicate thatall, if not most of the photographs were actually taken by Brown.

Herbert had his his office in his house, at least when he was in Benton Harbor. Herbert was a big game hunter; and when Joel was a child, hisfather used to re-tell his grandfather's hunting stories. Later, Joeltended to disbelieve them, but his father insisted they were true.Herbert had a big double-barreld shotgun, a cap and ball or percussionmodel with a cowhorn full of black powder which he gave Joel's dad whenhe was about eight. Joel's grandfather, Howard C. Thurtell's reaction was, 'He gave you what?' Joel's dad always resented that Joel'sgrandfather took the powder horn out to the back yard, dug a hole, pouredthe powder in the hole and ran water over it. 'Real spoil sport!' HowardTravis Thurtell also had told Joel that his grandfather had removed histonsils with the surgery done on his kitchen table, but that his tonsilshad to be removed a second time later on. In a 1998 letter to Susan Miller, Dr. James W. Miller (Evangeline andEdward Miller's son who was born October 14, 1913) recalled that shortly after he and his twin brother, Francis George Miller, were born their mother had a ruptured appendix and was operated on by his uncle, Dr.Herbert Thurtell, on the kitchen table in Suttons Bay. An index found on the internet in February 2000 in the Bureau of LandManagement database on the internet at http://www.glorecords.blm.govshowed that Henry Thurtell was issued a land patent on September 27,1904, for 160 acres in Humboldt County, California. This was a cashsale, and the location is shown as Aliquot Parts W 1/2 W 1/2, Section 9,Township 1 North, Range 5 East, Meridian Humboldt, Humboldt County,California. The BLM Serial number was CACAAA 146455. The land officelocation was not yet available online as of February 2000. Informationfrom the Humboldt County, California, Planning Department showed that theproperty was parcel number 210-08309 and was located in the far easternpart of the county, near or on the Trinity County, border, off a roadcalled Buck Mountain Road. As of February 2000 it was part of a600-acre parcel owned by Lloyd Fountain of Manhattan Beach, California.Their records showed the most recent change in their records for theproperty was in November 1998. The property would be south of a towncalled Willow Creek, which is located very near the Humboldt/TrinityCounty line, on Highway 299. As of February 2000 no improvements hadever been made to the property, and it was completely undeveloped. Records at the Humboldt County Recorders office showed that the record ofthe original purchase of the land was in the patent records. Certificatenumber 10046 there, recorded in Volume 239, Page 99, on December 10,1904, shows that Henry Thurtell of Washoe County, Nevada, deposited hiscertificate of the register of his property in the General Land Office ofthe United States at Eureka, California, confirming that he had paid infull for 'the West half of the North West quarter and the West half ofthe South West quarter of Section nine in Township one North of Rangefive East of Humboldt Meridian in California, containing one hundred andsixty acres.' Shortlyfollowing this transfer, she transferred the property in April 1947 toRex E. and Helen B. Fountain. No other transfer was shown in themicrofiche records at the Recorders office, apparently confirming theland was sold by the Federal government to Henry Thurtell as the originalowner, later transferred to his widow in 1947 and then to the Fountainsthe same year, and still in the possession of a member of the Fountainfamily and completely undeveloped as of February 2000, over 95 yearsafter it was originally purchased.
