DateLocationDescription
1882In 1882 Samuel R. Hosler was born November 10, 1820, in York County, Penn., and is one of six children born to George and Catharine (Rourbaugh) Hosler, who were both natives of Pennsylvania. George Hosler, father of our subject, was a carpenter, but during the latter part of his life engaged in farming. In 1881, he and family moved to Morrow County, Ohio, where Mr. Hosler died. The subject of this sketch, to his twentieth year, worked at farming. He then served three years at the carpenter's trade, after which he worked by the month two years; he then formed a partnership with a brother-in-law, which continued six years. In 1850, he emigrated to Albion, Noble Co., where for one year he worked at his trade. He then moved to Northport, Orange Township, where he again took up his trade. He erected, in Noble and La Grange Counties, the Bliss Woolen Mill and grist-mill, store buildings, etc., at Rome City, and a saw-mill, etc., at Wolcottville. After residing in Northport a number of years, he moved to his present farm. The first real estate he possessed in the county was the place now owned by Henry Hitchcock. He never lived there, however, but soon traded it for a part of his present farm. Mr. Hosler at one time owned 465 acres of land, but at present only owns 205 acres, having given the rest to his children. He was married to Barbara Keifer in 1843, and they are the parents of five children, as follows : John H., William W., Mary C, Minerva (deceased) and Ella B. The first named, John H., was born in Morrow County, Ohio, December 21, 1844. His early life was passed in Rome City and near Brimfield. He attended Hillsdale College the winter of 1865-66, and Eastman's Commercial College at Chicago the winter of 1866- 67, and there graduated. He taught school in Noble County the two following winters, and after that was employed as clerk and book-keeper at Brimfield, Spring Green, Wis., Kendallville and Chicago. In January, 1875, he commenced keeping books for Kellogg & Harris, of Reedsburg, Wis., in which capacity he continued five years. In February, 1880, Mr. Kellogg retiring from the firm, Mr. Hosler succeeded him, and the firm name now is Harris & Hosler, dealers in general merchandise, grain, farm produce, hops, etc. The firm is one of the most prosperous in a thriving town of 1,500 inhabitants, situated in the heart of the hop-growing district of the Northwest. They are agents for the American Express Company, and Mr. Harris is Postmaster of the town, Mr. Hosler being Deputy. John H. Hosler and Anna B. Gibson were united in wedlock November 28, 1872. This lady died at her parents' residence near Wawaka, June 12, 1877, leaving one daughter, Grace, born February 16, 1876. Mr. Hosler's second marriage, with Miss Grace M. Bell, of Tomah, Wis., was solemnized September 14, 1880. Mr. Hosler is at present a member of the Masonic Order and Chapter in Wisconsin. William W. Hosler, the second son, was born in Morrow County, Ohio, April 22, 1846. At the age of four years, he came with his parents to Indiana, and here received the benefits of the common schools. He attended Eastman's Business College with his brother, and ever since then, with the exception of clerking six months in Brimfield. has been farming. He was married, December 10, 1874, to Miss Mary E. Imes, daughter of William Imes, Esq., whose biography is found elsewhere. To them has been born one daughter — Maud M. Mrs. Hosler was born in Noble County, Ind., March 14, 1856. Soon after his marriage, he moved to his present place, where he has since resided. He owns 160 acres of excellent land and is one of the prosperous farmers of Orange Township. The two living daughters of Samuel R. Hosler are Mary C, wife of T. L. Imes, and Ella B., who is yet single and resides with her parents. The Hosler family are among the oldest and most respected in the township. They are enterprising citizens, liberal in their views on all subjects. The father is a life long Democrat in politics, while his sons are both Republicans.

From 1929 "The History of Reedsburg and the Upper Baraboo Valley" by Merton Krug: "The United Brethren Church at Tuckertown, now supplanted by a Lutheran Church, was organized about 1868, and the meetings were held in private homes. The first Pastor was Rev. George Hickey. (Nickey) [On June 21, 1875 Adin and Mary A. Tucker sold land in section 14, town of Washington, for $100 to the trustees ... A church was built in 1876 ... with the pastor being Rev. James Aldrich."].
The earliest pioneer of the missionary work in Wisconsin seems to have been G. G. Nickey, a man of quiet bearing, whose presence was often seen in the General Conferences of other years. Mr. Lawrence in his history says that the first society was organized by James Davis, of whom he speaks as "prominent and most beloved among" the early missionaries. His name, however, does not appear with those who were present at the organization. These missionaries had gone across into Wisconsin from Illinois. Their work attracted the attention of the General Conference of 1857, and that body directed that it be formed into a new conference. The organization was accordingly effected, the first session being held at Rutland, in Dane County, on September, 16, 1858, Bishop L. Davis presiding. In the list of appointments to charges the names of twenty ministers appear, with G. G. Nickey and S. L. Eldred as presiding elders.

Birth9 October 1824Sarah Jane Harris was born on 9 October 1824 at Richland, Ohio.
She was the daughter of Jonathan Whitaker Harris and Abigail C. Cracroft.
Marriage4 January 1844Sarah Jane Harris married John Henry Kiefer, son of George Philip Keifer and Eva Marcia Roedel, on 4 January 1844 at Richland, Ohio.
Death1 May 1907Sarah Jane Harris died on 1 May 1907 at Spring Green, Sauk, Wisconsin, at age 82 Sarah Jane (Harris) Keifer was born in Richland Co., Ohio on October 9, 1824, and died at Spring Green, Wisconsin, May 1st 1907. She was married to John Henry Keifer, January 4th, 1844 with whom she trod the pathway of life for nearly fifty-six years. To them were born two children, a son and a daughter. She leaves to mourn, her daughter, Mrs. C.W. Farrington, Falls City, Nebraska, three grandchildren, Edwin H. Keifer, Madison, Wisconsin, Fred Farrington and Mrs. E.H. Towle, and one great grandchild, Mary Towle, all of Falls City, Nebraska, also one brother, A.L. Harris of Reedsburg, and two
sisters, Mrs. W. Hood of Spring Green, and Mrs. Twist of Madison. Thus, one by one, our pioneer fathers and mothers are passing away. Aunt Jane, as she was lovingly called by nearly everyone in the place, came to the territory of Wisconsin, in the year of 1846, and with her young husband braved the trials and hardships all settlers at that time had to endure, and at the time of her death was the oldest actual settler in this part of the country, having lived in Sauk Co. almost sixty-one years. She was a member of the old settlers association of Sauk County, many of whom have read with interest and pleasure her sketches of early days published in the Home News of Spring Green. But she has gone to her reward. No more will the familiar face and kindly smile greet us, no more the form, with step growing each year a little slower and more faltering, will be seen among us, and though we know she has rounded out a full life of love and usefulness, yet how hard for the sad heart to say, "Thy will be done." Mrs. Keifer in her early married life embraced the Christian religion, united with the United Bretheren Church and was baptized in that faith. Some years later she united with the Congregational church, of which she was a member at the time of her death. Friends from away who attended the funeral, were the daughter, Mrs. C.W. Farrington, from Falls City, Nebraska; grandson, Edwin H. Keifer, Madison; her brother, A.L. Harris, Reedsburg; a sister, Mrs. Twist and daughter, Miss Ruth of Madison; Mrs. W.H. Harris of Reedsburg; Mrs. L.C. Starr and son Robert, Mineral Point; H.D. Hood and daughter Isabelle, Blue River. Funeral Services were held from the Congregational Church at 10:30 Saturday morning, conducted by the Reverand Harding R. Hogan, and she was laid to rest in the Spring Green cemetery by the side of her husband and son, the latter having preceded her by less than a year.
Burialafter 1 May 1907She was buried after 1 May 1907 at Spring Green Cemetery, Spring Green, Sauk, Wisconsin.

JOSEPH H. YEAGER, farmer; P. O. Steam Corners; is a native of Lancaster Co, Penn; he is third of a family of seven children; was born October 12, 1844; his parents, William and Harriet (Dase) Yeager, were born and reared in Lancaster Co. His father is a shoemaker by trade, and when a young man walked to Ohio with his "kit " of tools on his back, stopping at various places to work, and earn money with which to defray expenses; his object was to see the country, but unlike the "tramp " of modern times he wished to pay his way. He soon returned to his native county, and in 1852 gathered together his worldly effects and with his family came to this county, where he yet lives. About the year 1860 he relinquished the trade and has since followed farming. On arriving at his majority Joseph commenced business for himself and has followed farming, to which he seems adapted, although he has "run " a threshing machine for ten years. He has had wonderful success; last year he threshed forty-three thousand bushels of gain; this is no doubt owing to the fact that is one of our enterprising men, and has been running his machine with an engine, for the last five years, of which he has always been the engineer. ABRAHAM HOSLER, Section 36, farmer, P. O. Valley Falls, is a native of Pennsylvania, and was born in York County, January 9, 1818. When fourteen years of age he came to Ohio with his parents, locating in Richland County, and residing there until 1847, when Abraham removed to Noble County, Ind., where he followed
carpentering pursuits up to 1859, when he came to Andrew County,
Mo., and in the spring of 1860 purchased a claim in Jefferson County, Kas., which is now his home. Mr. Hosler was among the early settlers in his locality. He had
many drawbacks to contend with during the war. His stock was run off, stacks of grain burned, and other depredations, which affected him for a few years financially. Being a man of untiring industry, he soon, however, made up for its loss. Mr. H. has been four time
married, his first two wives being deceased. He was married in Ohio to Miss Elizabeth Spencer. By this union he has one child, Mary Catherine. His second wife was
Harriet Diffenbaugh, by whom he had five children--George W., Sarah E., Henry F., Eugene and Damon V. By his third wife, who
was formerly Miss Martha E. May, of Kansas, he had seven children--William T., John C., Dora C., Larry E., James F., Martha A. and Francis A. Mr. Hosler is a carpenter by trade, which he followed for twenty-two years. For three years he carried on business in Kansas,
doing considerable work on the Octagon Hotel in Valley Falls. His present wife was formerly Mrs. I. Leonard of Illinois.
