Cecilia was born October 10, 1915, to Joseph and Veronica (Kathol) Wubben at Wynot. She attended District 13 School located near St. Helena, completing eight years of education. She grew up on the farm that was homesteaded by her grandfather, Bernard Wubben, in 1860. She spent her life there until she married Henry M. "Hank" Schmidt on May 8, 1935, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Helena. He died at the age of 77, on May 9, 1986. From this union they raised 13 children. They farmed five miles northwest of St. Helena until 1938 when they moved four miles southwest of St. Helena. She began playing the organ for Mass in 1939. From then on she was involved in the church choir. In 1942 they moved to East Bow and she started a choir there. On January 29, 1943 they moved to St. Helena. She began playing organ there until becoming the choir director. She was involved with the choir for over 50 years. In 1943 they bought their own farm. The farm was called "The Riverview Stock Farm", southeast of St. Helena.
She served on the election board from 1970 to 2004. In 1970 she also started doing the flowers for the Catholic Church in St. Helena, and continued to do so until her health started to fail in 2006. Her first priorities were worshiping the Lord and loving and caring for her family. Ceil spent endless hours in the garden raising food for the family and of course thousands of flowers for the church bouquets. She enjoyed sewing and quilting. She, with the help of friends, made many quilts for the St. Helena Fourth of July celebration raffle. Her other hobbies included growing and caring for plants, music, playing cards and playing with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children: JoLean (Roy) Wintz, Milford, Iowa; Gerald and Sharon (Sudbeck) Schmidt, Fort Collins, Colo; Vernon and Sandra (Pinkelman) Schmidt, Dakota City; Cletus and Clara (Riibe) Schmidt, St. Helena; Joyce and Stan Hans, Wynot; Rose Marie and Ronald Rolfes, Wynot; Jean and Robert Brodersen, South Sioux City; Diane and Ray Limoges, Fordyce; Judy Schmidt, Hartington, Larry and Kathy (Kronizal) Schmidt, St. Helena; Cecilia and Mike Heimes, Fordyce; Keith and Mary Jean (Klug) Schmidt, St. Helena and Myron Schmidt, St. Helena; and special friend, Jean Murtha, Sioux Falls, S.D; 36 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Eugenia Schulte, Omaha; and Marian Feldhacker, Milford, Iowa; and a brother, Lawrence and Irene Wubben, Yankton, S.D., a sister-in law, Pauline Wubben, Midvale, Utah; a brother-in-law, Gilbert Feldhacker, Milford, Iowa.
