He farmed with his wife in Sauk County, moving to Mayville with his family in 1964. At Mayville he worked for Purity Cheese Company, Wisconsin Drainage and at various farms doing seasonal work. Survivors include his wife, Ellen of Mayville; three daughters, Mary (Larry) Maas of Sturgeon Bay, Sharon (Craig) Kelly of Madison and Christine (Danny O’Rourke) Harms of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sisters, Ruth Tietje and Caroline Robson, both of Wisconsin; four brothers, Reinhard (Irene) Harms, Edward (Lucille) Harms, Armond (Donna) Harms and Raymond (Ione) Harms, all of Wisconsin; six grandchildren, Todd (Chris) Maas, Melissa Kelly, Tyler Maas, Heather Kelly, Kealan O’Rourke and Tiernan O’Rourke; and two great-grandchildren, Trent and Trey Maas. Death3 December 2020Reverand Raymond L. Harms died on 3 December 2020 at age 87 Rev. Raymond L. Harms, age 87, of Reedsburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at the Sauk County Health Care Center. He was born to Henry A. Harms and Amanda nee Peters in their home in Westfield Township, rural, Reedsburg, WI on May 27, 1933. His parents brought him in holy baptism to the Lord that he might be born of Jesus by water and the Spirit and his name was written in the book of life with the blood of the Lamb. Raymond later confirmed his faith in the year of our Lord 1947, both at St. John Lutheran Church, Loganville. After finishing Reedsburg High School in 1951, he farmed with his father until 1953 when he entered Concordia Theological Seminary at Springfield, IL (now at Fort Wayne, IN).

While a student he married Ione Rose Meyer on June 8, 1957 at St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Reedsburg. Their marriage was blest with four daughters. Pastor Ray vicared at Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church in Heron, SD, under the supervision of Dr. Philip Mueller, president of the South Dakota District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. During the years of 1957 – 1959 he studied in the chaplaincy program of Concordia Theological Seminary in 1959. He furthered his studies for the Hospice chaplaincy at Carle Hospital in Urbana, IL., while a pastor at Our Savior Ev. Lutheran Church of Milford, IL.

He served in parishes in Wadena, Margo and Nut Mountain, Saskatchewan, Canada; Wautoma, Wild Rose and Deerfield, WI; Rock Lake and Egeland, ND; Medford, Waseca and Courtland, MN; and Milford, IL ministry before retirement in 1997. During his parish ministry he went to the Philippine Lutheran Church where he spent a short summer of observing the Philippine Lutheran Medical Mission work at Abatan Lutheran Hospital, North Luzon. While in Milford, IL, he trained for one summer under the auspices of Carle Hospital in Urbanna, IL for service in hospice as a chaplain and upon retirement in 1997 he was a chaplain (spiritual counselor) in the Home Health United Hospice Service in the Madison, WI surrounding area. In 2004 he retired and went to gardening at their home outside of Loganville, WI, and then moved to Reedsburg, WI in 2009.

Pastor Ray is survived by his wife Ione of 63 years; his daughters: Rebecca Lynn (Lyle) Gahler of North Mankato, MN, Barbara Ann (Rev. John) Suguitan of Cincinatti, OH, Michelle Kay (Rev. Burial will be made in St. John Cemetery, Loganville. Visitation will be on Saturday, December 5, 2020 from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. at the Farber Funeral Home in Reedsburg.

He was born on October 23, 1954, in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, the son of Reinhard and Irene (Kuhnau) Harms. On July 28, 1979, Bob was united in marriage to Michelle L. Winterfeld at St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Reedsburg. This marriage was blessed with two children. Bob was self-employed as a cabinet maker operating Harms Cabinet and Millwork in Reedsburg for many years.
Bob was a fisherman and hunter and a founding member of the Pine Needle Buck Camp. He looked forward to the time he spent with his friends and family hunting in northern Wisconsin. He was also a loyal Packer and NASCAR fan. Bob was a devoted husband and father who took pride in his close relationships with his family and friends. He touched the lives of so many and will be sorely missed.
He was preceded in death by his father, Reinhard; and brother-in-law, Peter Taylor.
Bob is survived by his wife, Michelle Harms of Reedsburg; mother, Irene Harms of Reedsburg; mother-in-law, Charna Kilmer of Fond du Lac; father-in-law, Melvin (Luella) Winterfeld of Superior; son, Nathan Robert Harms of Reedsburg; daughter, Janell Maye Hopson-Harms of Reedsburg; grandson, Landyn Robert Finley of Reedsburg; brothers and sisters: Linda Taylor of Reedsburg, Richard (Darlene) Harms of Cross Plains, Lora Harms and Ted Pittman of Madison, Russell (Elvia) Harms of Nashville, TN, Ronald Harms and Deb Nachtigal of Reedsburg; Several aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins along with many good friends.

We celebrate Robert’s life with a service on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 12:00 noon, at St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Reedsburg, with Pastor Paul Crolius officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at the church. A private family interment will take place prior to the service in St. John Cemetery, rural Loganville.
