He grew up in Marcus and graduated from Holy Name School in 1947. He then worked for the Clarkson Grocery Store before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served on active duty for two years before joining the reserves where he served for six years.

On October 17, 1951 Bill was united in marriage with Bernice Bauer at the Maryhill Visitation Church west of Cherokee. Five children were born to this union. Bill and Bernice made their home in Manilla for 50 years. Bill primarily worked at Farmland Foods and with the U.S.D.A as a federal meat inspector, retiring in 1993 after 27 years of service.

Throughout the years, Bill was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manilla and was active with the Holy Name Society.

On Thursday, September 7, 2017 Bill passed away at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll, Iowa. He was 87 years, 8 months and 28 days of age.

Preceding Bill in death are his parents; son Jeffrey Dickson; grandson John Humlicek and sisters Jean Boever, Adaline Bohlke, Maxine Bork, Dorothy Huff, Betty Tenager and Margaret Enneking.

He is survived by his wife Bernice Dickson; children Mike Dickson and his wife Beth, Gary Dickson and his wife Debbie, Vicki Humlicek and her husband Butch and Donna Dickson; grandchildren Nichole Thomas, Michaela Schnoes, Aaron Dickson, Justin Dickson, David Humlicek, Tammy Humlicek, Katie Mengwasser, Bill Dickson, Sara Weyers, Joseph Dickson and Brian Dickson; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She grew up on a farm attending elementary school at Catholic parochial at Maryhill transferring to Cleghorn High School graduating in 1949. She married James O'Meara October 11, 1956. Together they had three children Kathryn (Roger) Johnson, North Liberty, Ia, Richard (Kristin) O'Meara, Rochester, Mn and Karen (Lance) Oyen, Rochester Mn.
Dorothy was employed at several different jobs and retired in 1994 from Galva Union Elevator where she worked as a book keeper for 23 years.
Dorothy enjoyed gardening, playing cards, embroidering, doing crafts, bowling, reading, listening to books on tape and most of all spending time with family and friends. She greatly enjoyed interacting with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Left to cherish her memory included her children Kathryn, Richard, Karen, grandchildren Heather (Ed) Dasso, Keith (Ariana) Johnson, Josh Johnson, Ericka (Pat) Byer, Kristofer O'Meara, Joel O'Meara, Collin, Elizabeth, and Annika Oyen, great grandchildren Brooklyn and Noah Dasso, Beckett, Marley, and Addison Byer, sister Bernice Dickson, Alice (Don) Speers, In-laws Gerald and Rose O'Meara, Ronald and LaVonne O'Meara and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband James, parents Louis and Elizabeth Bauer, In-laws Clare and Viola O'Meara, sister Geraldine Wilberding, brother Vernon Bauer, nephew Jeff Dickson, In-laws Alfred Wilberding, William Dickson, William O'Meara, Beverly O'Meara, great granddaughter, Kylie Byer.
Private family services were held at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home, Rochester, MN. Private graveside service will be at Calvary Cemetery in Holstein, Iowa.

In his spare time, Vernon enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an extremely devoted farmer for many years. Vernon also enjoyed watching sports, especially Notre Dame. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Burial will be in Maryhill Visitation Church Cemetery, rural Cherokee, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars, L.A. Wescott Post# 2253. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Dick was born on May 19, 1927, in Cherokee to Albert and Regina (Wilberding) Rupp. He received his education at the Maryhill school. He later served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After returning from the service, he worked for Harold Johnston of Cleghorn, Iowa, operating his corn sheller. He became engaged in farming in 1948 with his brothers in Rock and Pilot Township. Dick started his own custom corn shelling business in 1952, which he continued until his retirement in 1998.

On Sept. 1, 1953, he married Frances Ann Lux at Maryhill.

Dick was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, where he served as Faithful Navigator. He also served in the Navy Reserve, was on the ASCS Board, the Board of Directors for the Farmers Co-Op and a member of the Immaculate Conception Church Board.

Dick was a fun-loving person, well known for his sense of humor and notorious one-liners. He loved being around his friends and family and people loved being around him. He had a way of motivating people, making a hard job or bad situation seem not so bad. He took great pride in farming and enjoyed a hard day's work, followed by a nice hot or cold beverage.

Dick is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Frances Ann Rupp of Cherokee; four children, Steven Rupp and his wife, Aimee of Cherokee, Diane Rupp of Ames, Iowa, Janet Remillard and her husband, Dick of Beaverton, Ore. and Don Rupp of Seattle, Wash; five grandchildren, Ann Wolterman, Alecia Rapp, Kayla Remillard, Angela Rupp and Cory Remillard; three great-grandchildren, Emma and Caleb Wolterman and Madison Rupp; sisters, Dorothy Schnoes of Marcus, Iowa and Kitty Kohn of Cherokee; brothers, Delbert Rupp and his wife, Marge of Long Beach, Calif., DuWayne Rupp and his wife, Ethel of Cherokee and Jack Rupp and his wife, Ruby of Ida Grove, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Cele Rupp of Cherokee and Eleanor Rupp of Portland, Ore; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Mount; and four brothers, Ralph, Tom, Francis and Kenny Rupp.

Mr. Rupp was born Jan. 1, 1933, in Cherokee, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He lived in the Portland area since the early 1970s. He owned Western Washington Shippers, a trucking business, for about 10 years and also owned raceshorses at Portland Meadows, retiring in 1996. He married Eleanor "Mike" Hervey in 1967.

A lifelong resident of Rock Township and the Maryhill Parish, her childhood years were spent on the family farm. She attended school at Maryhill for eight years and then attended Quimby High School and graduated in 1947.

On June 23, 1949, Kitty was united in marriage to Lorne B. Kohn at Maryhill Catholic Church. Following their marriage they farmed their entire life in Rock Township. Kitty worked as a homemaker assisting on the farm and helping raise their four children.

Kitty was an active member of Maryhill Catholic Church, the Holy Tearers, and the Quimby Red Hat Society. She loved to play cards and belonged to several card clubs over the years. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, bowling, and baking. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren's activities and sporting events.

On January 15, 2016, Kitty passed away at her farm at the age of 87.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lorne B. Kohn on February 1, 1995; her parents, Albert and Regina Rupp; one grandson, Joseph Laurence Cronin, Jr; five brothers: Ralph Rupp, Richard Rupp, Francis Rupp, Thomas Rupp, and Kenneth Rupp; and one sister, Betty Mount.

She will lovingly be remembered by her four children: James (Bonnie) Kohn of Cherokee, IA, Jeanne (Bob) Bohnenkamp of Le Mars, IA, Patricia (Terry) Taggart of Hinton, IA, and Peggy (Joe) Cronin of Holstein, IA; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; siblings: Dorothy Schnoes of Marcus, IA, Delbert (Marge) Rupp of Long Beach, CA, Wayne (Ethel) Rupp of Cherokee, IA, and Jack (Ruby) Rupp of Ida Grove, IA; two sisters-in-law, Frances Ann Rupp of Cherokee, IA, and Eleanor Rupp of Portland, OR; she is also survived by many nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., a rosary at 5 p.m. and a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m., at Holy Name Catholic Church. Visitation will resume 9:30 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Earnest-Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus.

Dorothy Elizabeth Schnoes was born on May 12, 1924, in Cherokee County, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Regina (Wilberding) Rupp. She was baptized in the Catholic faith at the Visitation Parish at Maryhill near Cherokee. She received her education at Maryhill Catholic School.

Dorothy and Edward Jacob Schnoes were united in marriage on June 19, 1947, at Visitation Parish at Maryhill. Dorothy and Ed farmed near Marcus, where they started their family and were blessed with three children. They continued farming until 1985 and then retired and moved into Marcus. Ed passed away on Feb. 16, 2005.

Dorothy was an active member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. She served as a lay distributor and leader of the rosary. She held various offices with St. Ann's Guild and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Dorothy also belonged to the Missionary Association Exchange Club. Along with attending her grandchildren's activities, she participated in Hobby Club and played in card clubs.

Grateful to have shared her life are her children and their spouses, Ron and Barbara Schnoes of Ames, Iowa, Sandra and Kyle Tapper of Marcus, and Jeffrey and Mylene of Spanish Fort, Ala; 12 grandchildren, Jessica Pottebaum, Ryan Schnoes, Jill Smidt, Eric Schnoes, Becky Carmean, Cory Tapper, Jackie Miller, Nick Schnoes, Karl Schnoes, Mike Schnoes, Asia Schnoes and Christian Schnoes; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Delbert and Marge Rupp of Long Beach, Calif., Wayne and Ethel Rupp of Cherokee, and John "Jack" and Ruby Rupp of Ida Grove, Iowa; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed; a daughter-in-law, Kristine; sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Mount and Kathleen "Kitty" Kohn; and brothers, Richard, Francis, Kenneth, Thomas and Ralph.

She was born Aug. 30, 1916, in Geddes, S.D., the daughter of Mikkel and Lena Johnson Standy. She was raised and educated on the family farm in Geddes with 11 siblings.

She and Robert Varuska were married Nov. 10, 1937, in Mitchell, S.D.

After marrying, she moved to McMinnville and later settled in Carlton. She worked for the Wells-Lamont Glove Factory for a short time. She enjoyed playing cards with friends, gardening and baking.

Survivors include four sons, Robert Varuska of Carlton, Terry Varuska of McMinnville, Stanley Varuska of Gaston and Richard Varuska of Portland; three brothers, Ed Standy of McMinnville, Elmer Standy of Chamberlin, S.D., and Oscar Standy of Spokane, Wash; three sisters, Sally Fijala of Platte, S.D., Myrtle Scott of Geddes and Gena Parker of Red Bluff, Calif; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992.
