Mrs. Sommervold, the former Irene Marjorie Halderson, was born Jan. 27, 1908, to Michael and Laura (Lehne) Halderson at the family's farm in rural Elk Point, S.D. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Elk Point. She graduated from Augustana Academy in Canton, S.D., in 1928. She later attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis and the University of South Dakota.

From 1943 to 1955, she worked with the Lutheran Church Home Missions. She worked first with the National Lutheran Council in war ministry evangelism. When the war was over, she worked with the American Lutheran Church Board of American Missions. She helped with the establishment of new congregations and visitation in 22 parishes in California and elsewhere. While in California, she attended a session of the Constituting Convention of the United Nations in San Francisco.

In 1955, she returned to South Dakota and on June 2, 1956, she married Sigvald Sommervold in Sioux Falls, S.D. they lived on Mr. Sommervold's home place in Union County, S.D. During that time, she was a member of Roseni Lutheran Church and was active in the church's Sunday School, Mission Society, Women's Missionary Federation, Ladies Aid and other activities.

After her husband's death on Nov. 13, 1978, she moved to Vermillion where she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Women of the ELCA. She had been a resident of the Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center since June of this year.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Margaret Sommervold of Sioux Falls; a nephew, Bernard Ofstehage and his wife, Glenda of Elk Point; and two nieces, Patricia Olson and her husband, Glenn of Sioux City and Marlene Wilson and her husband, John of Charlotte, N.C.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Halderson and Mildred Ofstehage.

On June 28, 1927, she married Louis Bauer at Maryhill. They farmed in Sheridan Township for many years. He preceded her in death on Sept. 4, 1972.

Elizabeth enjoyed rosary making, gardening, bread making and fancy hand stitching.

Survivors include a son, Vernon Bauer of Cleghorn; four daughters, Geraldine Wilberding and her husband, Alfred of Remsen, Iowa, Bernice Dickson and her husband, William of Manilla, Iowa, Dorothy O'Meara and her husband, James of Spencer, Iowa and Alice Speers and her husband, Donald of Storm Lake, Iowa; a brother, Raymond Glassmaker and his wife, Helen of Cleghorn; a sister, Josephine Turner of Albuquerque, N.M; 13 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Henry and Frank; two sisters, Dolores Ford and Hilda Peterson; and a grandson, Jeff Dickson.
