Peder Abrahamson came from Norway at the age of 19. He came to Sioux City, Iowa where he worked for the railroad. In 1891, he married Julia Christenson. They bought their farm two miles north and one and three-fourths miles east of Spink. He was a handyman and carpenter so he built their house and farm buildings. He also dug trenches by hand for running water to their house, barn and hog house. The Abrahamsons were the first in the neighborhood to have electricity by installing a Cushman plant. Peder died in 1930. Julia continued to live on the farm until 1945 when she moved to Beresford.9
Peder Abrahamson was a farmer.
Peder and his brother Sever married sisters, Julia and Anna. Peder was 30 and Julia was 19 at the time of their marriage. They raised 16 children, 8 girls and 8 boys. A seventeenth child died in infancy. The family all worked hard on the farm. When Peder and his sons went to cultivate, they were like a parade; each boy with his team and cultivator moving out of the barnyard, one after another.

Ole Andreas Abrahamson was a farmer.
Ole Abrahamson was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Norway and was a faithful member of the Brule Creek Lutheran church where he served as Klokker and choir master. He worked on the first church and helped in building the second, and present church. He and his wife, Anna Eide, had nine children; all born and raised on the same 160 acre farm which Ole and his wife bought for a total of $600. He lived and worked this farm until his death. His parents, Abraham & Anna, made their home with him. The Ole Abrahamson family was a musical family - all of them self taught. The father, Ole, was a violinist. His five sons have played various instruments in solo work, dance jobs, and for their own amusement. About 1885, Ole organized the first choir for the Brule Creek Lutheran Church at Spink. He both directed the choir and accompanied on the violin. He also led the hymn singing of the congregation.

Description of Loen from "San Francisco News Letter (Jan.-June 1927)":
"Loen. For Lake Loen. Surrounded by snow-capped mountain ranges, intersected with beautiful green valleys. Lake Loen presents quite an Alpine appearance. The great rolling glacier Halseth, with its masses of blue ice constantly moving down the mountain side; the Steep Ravenfjeld and the Nonsnib towering 6,000 feet above you, make a wonderful picture."

In 1926 Marie returned to Norway on a visit. On one of the post cards she sent, she wrote "... Have also been to Holmenesett. It was just as it was except it seemed so small. Holme-Ni out in the fjord was just the same." (Is this where the Holmseth name came from? Abraham Olson sometimes used Abraham Holmseth as a name.) Marie came to America on a steamship with her parents when she was 8. When Miss Olsen was a young girl, she and her sister boarded a steam-powered train and traveled from Sioux City to Chicago where she worked as a cook. She cooked in huge Chicago mansions until retiring at the age of 85. Among her employers were the millionaire families of Rosenwald and Jelke. Rosenwald was president of Sears Roebuck and Co. and Jelke was an oleomargarine heir. After her retirement she lived at 606 Market St, Sioux City, Iowa. Her special interests were cooking, needlework, music and a large "family" of nieces and nephews. At the age of 92, she moved to the Sunrise Manor, 5501 Gordon Drive, Sioux City, Iowa. In 1980 at the age of 107, the Social Security Office in Baltimore said Marie was considered to be one of the oldest residents of the county. The Sioux City Jornal, Wednesday, October 14, 1981 wrote: "Iowa's Commission On the Aging keeps a list of the state's citizens who have attained the ageo of 100 years or more. The list has existed for five years and is, admittedly, incomplete... At the top of the list now is 108-year-old MARIE OLSEN, of Sioux City, who is the oldest citizen of Iowa, as far as the commission can determine. Marie, who came to America from Nordfjord, Norway, at age 8, resides at Sunrise Manor, a nursing and retirement home. "She's very quiet at this age, and not an outgoing person," said a nurse at the home. "She does enjoy visiting with the aides though." Marie was approximately 108 years 11 months old at time of death.5

DateLocationDescription
Andreas 'Andy' Abrahamson was a farmer.
Andy was six years old when he came to America through the New York port of entry. His parents farmed near Spink, SD. At age 21, he went west to Philip, SD, to homestead. Land speculators abounded at that time, extolling the fine, verdant land that lay out west. Railroads offered special "emmigrant" cards - half for livestock & half for personal possessions - at special rates. And all were very careful to take the prospective homesteaders out in the Spring when the land was beautiful. A wave of people rushed out to take advantage of free land. Many from the Spink community went west in 1906. A group of four young people banded together to face the prairie: Andreas Abrahamson, Edward Larson (son of the owner and operator of Spink General Store), Lisa Larson (Edward's sister), and Ester Peterson (Edward's future wife). They went to what is now Haakon County & claimed land as close together as possible - 3 quarters were adjoining and 1 quarter a half mile west. They build their homes, dug wells, fenced, planted trees, plowed land and lived there for the necessary one year. When the necessary year of residence was up, the land was theirs. In May 1907, they took the train to Pierre, SD, and had a double wedding - Andy and Lise, Eddie and Esther. Farming around Philip was difficult and these homesteaders recognized it all too well. With the help of Lise & Eddie's father, Eddie and Andy started Larson's General Store in Philip, SD. They purchased homes, side by side, just west of the main street. Andy & Lise's first son was born in Philip, SD. As the "homesteading" trade slowed down, Andy sold his share of the business to Eddie and Andy & Lise moved back to Spink, SD. They built their home on the northwest corner of Spink intersection. Andy farmed there until his retirement when his son, Norman, assumed the work. Andy & Lise lived in a small home on the farm until their deaths.

  1. There was some question as to Anna's name. On their son Ole's death certificate, his mother is listed as Gyntess. On daughter Rachel's death certificate, the name is Ann Lorence Gjytri. Ragna, Ole's daughter, grew up in the same home with her grandmother Anna and Ragna said she had to write her grandmother's maiden name many, many times so that she would get it right. She says the name is Gjytri.

Adolph homesteaded in Zweibach County. He raised horses and shipped them to auction sales in eastern South Dakota. He never married. He was a veteran of World War I - Private Adolph Abraham, Co 18, 4th Infantry, Amer. E. F., APO Q 740, Ser #22 14 302, WW I. A newspaper clipping reported UNION COUNTY BOY HAS CLOTHES PIERCED BY BULLETS FOUR TIMES. History records that during the Revolutionary war, the Indians tried repeatedly to shoot General Washington from his horse, and failing to do so, became of the opinion that he was a superior natural being, whom to kill would call down the wrath of the gods. Union County has a young man who recently reached home from service in France that can tell almost as remarkable a story, and while he has no rabbit's foot in his left-hand pocket, and was not aware of any connection with the super human being he surely was wonderfully fortunate, to say the least. The young man is ADOLPH ABRAHAMSON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Abrahamson, who live three miles north of the Spink store, and the remarkable fact is that four bullets passed through his hat, and one through his coat, yet he received not a scratch. The fact that he escaped so nicely becomes a pleasant matter to recount, but when the possibilities of any one of the missiles of death going wrong is suggested, it is far from a pleasant topic of conversation. The young soldier is the grandson of Ole Christensen, who departs Tuesday morning for a visit with his daughters, Mrs. Sever Abrahamson and Mrs. Edward Nelson, in the Golden Valley, Montana.
