He was born Nov. 1, 1904, at Cobb, Wisconsin, the son of Frank and Alvina (Nagel) Martens. He married Geraldine L. McWilliams on Nov. 7, 1931 in Darlington, Wis. He graduated from Platteville High School and Platteville State Teachers College, now UW-Platteville.

He taught at Darlington High School for 42 years beginning in 1926 and coached for 35 years. His football teams won ten conference championships and two co-championships. He was head coach of the 1947 Wisconsin South All Star Football team which defeated the North Team 31-7. In 1953-1954 he served as president of the Wisconsin High School Coaches Association, and was a scout for the University of Wisconsin for a number of years. In 1980, he was a charter inductee into the Wisconsin High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame. He served on the Darlington Board of Education for 15 years following his retirement as a teacher and coach. In 1982, the athletic field at Darlington High School was named after him. He was an avid golfer all of his life. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Darlington, Wis.

Survivors are his wife of 64 years, Geraldine; three children, Donna (Freeman) Born of Santa Rosa, Calif., Don (Janan) Martens of Santa Ana, Callif. and Ted (Nancy) Martens of Easton, PA; four grandchildren; and a great grandson. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by four sisters; and a brother.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Darlington, with burial in the church cemetery.

Charlene L. Yates was born Sept. 20, 1949, at Akron, the daughter of Clarence and Leona (Kisting) Yates. Charlene lived on a farm near Brunsville until she was 6 years old and the family moved to Le Mars. She attended elementary school in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1967.

As a young woman, Charlene had worked at the B & B Store, Frontier Café, Dobson Grocery Store, and the Club Café. It was while she worked at the Club Café she met her future husband, Dick. Charlene was united in marriage to Richard "Dick" Williams on Oct. 7, 1967, at the First United Methodist Church in Le Mars. Charlene worked at Aalfs Manufacturing for 22 years. Following the closing of the plant, Charlene attended Western Iowa Tech where she was an "honor student" graduating in 2002 with an associates degree. In 2000, she started her career at the Le Mars Daily Sentinel. She was the mail-room supervisor until last month when her health prevented her from working.

Charlene enjoyed helping with her grandchildren and reading books.

She will be remembered for her inner strength, dedication, and wonderful sense of humor.

She will be lovingly remembered her husband of 40 years, Dick of Seney; three daughters and families, Stacie and Mike Means and their children Hayden and Jacob of Hinton, Carrie and Mike Wilkison and their children Gavin and Ella, of Hawarden and Jessica Williams and her fiancée Jason Peters and their children Kaylie and Rylie of Le Mars; four sisters, Darlene and Selmer Bergerson of Knoxville, Tenn., Arlene Klemme of Akron, Marlene Henry of Kingsley, and Eilene and Jerry Rolling of Le Mars; several nieces and nephews; and her many friends and coworkers of the Le Mars Daily Sentinel.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Leona (Kisting) Yates; a son, Troy in infancy; brothers-in-law, Dale Klemme, Emmett Henry, and Gerald "Corky" Hagan; and her godson, Brian Rolling.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the Rev. Jason Larson of the Seney United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Mike Means, Mike Wilkison, Jason Peters, Dan Klemme, Bruce Rolling, and Doug Hagan. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Hayden and Jacob Means, Gavin and Ella Wilkison, and Kaylie and Rylie Peters.

Marlene Martha Yates was born May 22, 1942, on the family farm near Westfield, the daughter of Clarence and Leona (Kisting) Yates. The family resided in Brunsville prior to moving to Le Mars. Marlene attended school at Le Mars Community. Following her education she worked as a waitress.

On July 30, 1960 Marlene was united in marriage to Gerald "Corky" Hagan at the First United Methodist Church in Le Mars. The couple lived in Oklahoma for a brief time while Corky was in the service. The couple returned to the Kingsley area following Corky's discharge from the military. Corky died in 1972. Marlene later married Emmett Henry on June 6, 1996 at the Kingsley United Methodist Church. Emmett died in 2003.

Marlene was employed at the Kingsley Dental Clinic for 35 years, recently retiring in May 2007. She was a member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and volunteered at the Kingsley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Marlene will be lovingly remembered by her children, Doug and Tammy Hagan of Alton, Iowa, Valerie and John Ites of Laurie, Mo., and David Hagan of Kingsley; grandchildren Angela, Amanda, Beth, Amy, Hanna, Ashley, Brittany, and Curt; great-grandchildren Hailee, McKenzie, Jake, Vanessa, Desiree, Liberty, and Ryley; sisters Darlene and Selmer Bergerson of Knoxville, Tenn., Arlene Klemme of Akron, and Eilene and Jerry Rolling of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Gerald "Corky" Hagan; second husband Emmett William Henry; twin infant daughters Denise and Diane; and a sister Charlene Williams.

Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the Kingsley United Methodist Church. The Rev. Roger Kurtenbach will officiate. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Monday) at the Johnson-Earnest Funeral Home of Kingsley. The family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer services at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral on Tuesday.

Mr. Baack, was born Feb. 5, 1926, in Reading township, Sioux county, Iowa to Carl and Katherine Plueger Baack. He lived in Sioux county until 1950, moving to a farm in Plymouth county. He served as a mailman and also farmed since 1961. The family moved to Le Mars in 1972. Mr. Baack served 19 years and 10 months with the United States post office. He was the Le Mars downtown letter carrier for 17 years. He was active in Brunsville's Heeren-McHale post Legion club and a veteran of World War 2. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran church in Craig.

He married LaVonne Jurgensen August 22, 1948 at Trinity Lutheran church in Akron.

He is survived by his wife, LaVonne, Le Mars; a daughter, Mrs. Tim (Susan) Bachman, Denver; two sons, Dennis of Sheldon and Jim of Le Mars; one grandson; his mother, Mrs. Katherine Baack, Le Mars; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Klemme, Le Mars and Mrs. Donald (Doris) Haage, rural Akron; and a brother, Duane Baack, Denver.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Congregational hymns sung were "How Great Thou Art" and "Lift High The Cross". Burial was in Riverside cemetery, Akron, under direction of Schroeder Funeral home. Pallbearers were Heath Hillrichs, Clint Nielsen, Terry Dolan, Troy Dolan, LaMont Rohlfs, Amy Nielsen, Heather Hillrichs, Leslie Dolan.

Mrs. Klemme was born March 20, 1913 at Kingsley, Iowa, daughter of Gustav and Anna (Roloffs) Friske. She married Edwin Hillrichs November 17, 1938 in Preston township, rural Akron. He died Sept. 18, 1949. She married Harry Hillrichs March 20, 1952 in Sioux City. He died Feb. 20, 1976. She later married Walter Klemme Aug. 21, 1983 in Akron. She had farmed in the Akron area until 1971, when she moved to Le Mars, She moved back to Akron in 1976. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She had been baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran church in Akron. She was a member of the ELCA and Rural Home Culture club in Akron.

Survivors include her husband, Walter of Akron; two daughters, Joann and her husband Bill Dolan of Beresford, and Darlis Nielsen of Akron; a son and his wife, Gary and Charlotte Hillrichs of Akron; a sister, Edna Friske of Hawarden; a brother, Paul Friske of Akron; seven grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. In addition to her first two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Freida Scheld and Mary Balk; a brother, Arthur and a grandson, Rusty Hillrichs.
