Vernon Robert Jurgensen was born in Akron, Iowa on May 5, 1928 to Charles and Emma (Klemme) Jurgensen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. He grew up on the Jurgensen family farm and attended school in Akron through 8th grade. He then began working full time farming with his father and brother, Elmer. Vernon was united in marriage to Leanna Meske on May 30, 1948 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. Vernon and Leanna made their home on the Jurgensen family farm and Vernon continued to farm. He was a diversified farmer: he had dairy cattle, hogs, and chickens. He did custom baling, combining, and worked closely with family and neighbors. He grew corn, beans, oats and alfalfa and also drove an egg truck. Vernon was a talented handy man – he was able to fix about anything and helped with small home construction. He had a great love of animals, specifically his dogs. He was a people person – loved visiting with friends and loved spending time with his family, especially for holidays and birthdays.

Vernon was a life long member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served in many capacities: he was on the church council for many years, sang in the choir, assisted with video recording service for the nursing home, and helped with janitorial and lawn care. Vernon and Leanna loved to dance and went to many dances over the years. Vernon bowled in league for many years, was a self taught accordion player and enjoyed playing cards. He loved going to the Plymouth County and Clay County Fairs and took a few trips out of state with Leanna to visit family and once to Hawaii.

Vernon retired from farming full time in 1999. Vernon and Leanna eventually moved to the Akron Care Center in August of 2017.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 70 years, Leanna; children: Cheryl (Larry) Plueger of Merrill, Bruce (Pam) Jurgensen of Alcester, South Dakota, Roxanne (Blake) Larson of Akron, and Philip (Kim) Jurgensen of Sneads Ferry, North Carolina; daughter in law, Vicky Jurgensen of Akron; grandchildren: Joshua (Rebecca) Plueger, Jamie (Amy Willms) Jurgensen, Joel (Sarah) Plueger, Janel (Carl) Miller, Devin (Chris) Royalty, Matthew (Julie) Jurgensen, John Plueger, Amanda (Charlie Mohning) Larson, Michael Jurgensen, Luke Jurgensen, Lerin Jurgensen, Andrew (Deb) Jurgensen, David Larson, and Jordan (Kayla) Jurgensen; many great grandchildren, step great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sister in law, Berniece Jurgensen of Akron, Iowa; nieces and nephews: Arlen Nannen, Marlys Johnson, Kenneth Frerichs, Rodney Jurgensen, and Valerie Appley; and other extended relatives.
