Maureen attended Reedsburg schools and received her teaching certificate at Sauk County Teachers College in 1949. She taught school for over 25 years predominately in the Catholic Parochial Schools in Beloit & Janesville, WI and in South Beloit, IL. She spoke fondly of her first year in teaching at a one room school house in Sauk County as her best teaching experience. She enjoyed working outside of the home after retiring from teaching at the family business Chekouras Furniture (Clinton, Janesville & Beloit, WI) and at Sergenian’s Floor Company in Madison. Even after retiring from business, she continued to volunteer as the Playground Supervisor at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic School. Maureen believed in having a purpose and to getting something accomplished each day.

    Maureen moved to Beloit and married John E. Chekouras in 1952. They were married 62 years until his death in 2014. She was a devout Catholic, receiving her first sacraments at Sacred Heart Church in Reedsburg, WI, a member of St. Thomas Church and Our Lady of the Assumption Congregation in Beloit. Maureen’s greatest love of all was being with family and friends. The Byrnes’, Chekouras’, Bacon’s, CADS and beyond all knew that she deeply cared for them. Everyone was welcome at her home and she looked forward to gatherings at the holidays especially the annual Byrnes Family Reunion.

    Maureen's Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 624 N. Willow St, Reedsburg, WI, on Friday, Sept. 21 with visitation at 11:00 am, 12:00 noon Mass, burial at Calvary Cemetery in Reedsburg and luncheon to follow.

    Maureen's Memorial Mass will be 1:00 p.m. on Friday October 5, 2018 at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 2222 Shopiere Road, Beloit, WI with a brief reception to follow.

She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, the Marian Guild, the Rock County Shamrock Club, the Beloit Eagles Lodge No. 557 and the Beloit Moose Lodge No. 191.

    Survivors include her three daughters, Barbara (Gerald) Twentyman of San Francisco, Calif., Bonnie (Gary) Paul of Green Bay, and Pat (Michael) Strain of Beloit; two sons, John "Jack" (Joann) Meister, of Rockford, Ill., and James (Patrick McCreagh) Meister of San Francisco, Calif; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Bernice (Norbert) Fike of Beloit, Maureen (John) Chekouras of Beloit, Pat (Russ) Hale of Reedsburg, and Mary (Bob) Peiffer of Tomahawk; three brothers, Bernard (Virginia) Byrnes of Waunakee, Don (Joyce) Byrnes of Reedsburg, and Pat (Sandy) Byrnes of Milwaukee; sister-in-law, Helen (Ray) Byrnes of South Beloit, Ill; nieces and nephews; and special friends, Evie and Ken George.

    Prayer services will be 9:45 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2003, at DALEY-MURPHY-WISCH AND ASSOCIATES FUNERAL HOME, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at ST. JUDE CATHOLIC CHURCH, with Father Steve Kortendick officiating. Burial will be in Mount Thabor Cemetery.

  • Norbert Austin Fike died on 19 November 2018 at Wisconsin at age 98 Norbert A. Fike age 98 of Beloit died Monday November 19, 2018 in his home. He was born April 13, 1920 to the late Henry and Amelia (Mitchell) Fike in LaValle, WI, he was the youngest of five children. Norbert graduated from Reedsburg High School in 1938. On November 20, 1941 he married his high school sweetheart, Bernice Byrnes in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Reedsburg, WI. On April 13, 1942 he enlisted in the Air Force and was assigned with the 120 Airborne Squadron in England as a flight engineer. After eleven bombing missions his plane was shot down over Switzerland where he was interned until hostilities ceased. He was released from the service on April 28th, 1944. While in Switzerland he became interested in fixing watches and clocks. After returning home he joined an apprenticeship program in watch repair and continued in the trade all his life. Before moving to Beloit in 1962, Norbert and Bernice owned and operated jewelry stores in Colby and Adams, WI. He was employed at Dubes Jewelry store in Janesville for 45 years. Norbert enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He and his wife enjoyed entertaining at home where Norbert was famous for his old fashioned cocktails. They also enjoyed traveling. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon (Mark) Weinand of Eagle River, WI, Jean Fike of Beloit, WI, sons Gary Fike of Warrens, WI, and Greg Fike of Beloit, WI: four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, a daughter Judy, sister Carol Selmons and brother-in-law Harold, brothers Gerald and Norman, sisters-in-law, Angel (Gerald) Fike and Mary (Norman) Fike. Norbert's Mass of Christian Burial will be 12 Noon on Tuesday November 27, 2018 at OUR LADY of the ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2222 Shopiere Road, Beloit with Fr. Michael Resop officiating. Friends will be received on Tuesday in the Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Entombment will be private.

He was born on Oct. 22, 1918, in Lime Ridge and was united in marriage to Mary Catherine Walsh on July 1, 1941, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Reedsburg. After the ceremony they ate, danced, went home to milk the cows and returned to their wedding dance. Mr. Fike was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 1307 of Evanston and had helped to build the Fox Lake Community Center, and did much of the scroll work for the Second Federal Bank in Fox Lake. Following his retirement as a carpenter he was employed as custodian for St. Bede Church and School in Ingleside, where he was a church member, and a Knight of Columbus St. Bede Pius X Council. In addition to running his saw filing business for many years he enjoyed woodworking, fishing and helping his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by his children, Rita Ness of Round Lake Beach, Ill., Robert (Charlotte) Fike of Addison, Ill., Ellen (Cary) Knascik of McHenry, Ill; grandchildren, Michelle Jordan of Round Lake Beach, Ill., Nicole Ness of Round Lake Beach, Ill., Scott (Karen) Fike of Round Lake, Ill., Thomas Fike of McHenry, Ill., Jennifer Knapcik of Fox Lake, Ill., Mark Knapcik of McHenry, Ill; great grandchildren, Brittany and Kelsey Jordan of Round Lake, Ill., Gary and Katelyn Fike of Wonder Lake, Ill., David Horton of Round Lake, Ill; brother, Norbert Fike of Beloit. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; his sister, Carol Seamans; and his son-in-law Harold Ness. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, April 7, 2008, at the K.K. She is survived her husband, Raymond Kopf of Baraboo; 4 children, Everett (Elaine) Kopf of Baraboo, LaVon (Ray) Astle of Reedsburg, Duane (Virginia) Kopf of Baraboo and Francis (Billi) Kopf of Oregon; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Adeline Hinz of Rock Springs; 5 brothers, Melvin (Grace) Schara of Middleton, Lawrence (June) Schara of Reedsburg, Lloyd (Mary Ann) Schara of Texas, Virgil (Nadine) Schara of Texas, Bill (Judy) Schara of Madison; 1 brother-in-law, Otto Mueller of Baraboo; 2 sisters-in-law, Adeline Lange of North Freedom and Esther Gavin of Reedsburg; other relatives and friends. Josephine was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Leona Mueller; a brother, Dean Schara; a sister-in-law, Wilma Schara; and a brother-in-law, Garvin Hinz. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, November 12, 2001, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Baraboo with Pastor Myron Schwanke officiating. Interment will take place in the Walnut Hill Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday, November 11, from 2:00 until 6:00 P.M. at the Redlin Funeral Home in Baraboo; and on Monday, from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services at the church.

    She was born on May 26, 1920, to William and Edith (Lyon) Schara. She was united in marriage to Garvin P. Hinz on Feb. 14, 1939, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Baraboo. They farmed until they retired and moved to Rock Springs. In 2006 she went to live with her daughter Carol in Reedsburg and for the last two years she resided at the Reedsburg Area Senior Life Center.



    She is survived by her three daughters, Carol (Richard) Costerisan, Ardith (Tim) Curtin, Audrey (Doug) Hill; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She is further survived by two brothers, Lloyd (MaryAnn) Schara and William Jr. (Judy) Schara; two sisters-in-law, June and Grace Schara; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Garvin; grandson, Michael Costerisan; sisters, Josephine Kopf and Leona Mueller; and brothers, Lawrence, Melvin, Virgil, and Dean Schara.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Baraboo with Father Jay Poster officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will follow the service at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family to be donated in Adeline’s name.



    The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the staff at the Reedsburg Area Senior Life Center for the special care they showed Adeline during her stay.

  • Otto H. Mueller died on 4 December 2003 Otto H. Mueller, age 93 of Baraboo, passed away on Thursday evening, December 4, 2003 at his residence. Otto, the son of Herman and Mary Mueller, was born in the Town of Sumpter in Sauk County. He was united in marriage to Leona Schara at St. John's Evangelical Church in Leland, by pastor John G. Pfohl on February 14, 1935. She preceded him in death on January 14, 1999. Otto farmed in the townships of Sumpter, Merrimac, and Baraboo. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Baraboo. Survivors include three sons, Wayne (Donna) Mueller of Baraboo, Allan (Mary) Mueller of Baraboo, and James (Yolanda) Mueller of Texarkana, Ark; four daughters, Beldona (Warren) White of Baraboo, Elaine Larsen of Elkhorn, Janice (Wayne) Steinhorst of Oregon, and Betty Crum of Wisconsin Dells; 24 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Emma Wolkow of Reedsburg, Celia Hewitt of Columbus, and Helen Englehart of Madison; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. In addition to his wife, Leona, Otto was preceded in death by his parents; his granddaughter, Debra Ann Larsen; infant twin grandsons, Howard and Robert Larsen; and a son-in-law, Tom Larsen. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Baraboo with Pastors Deb and Steve Ohrtman officiating. Interment will take place in the Walnut Hill Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services, at the church. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society. The Redlin Funeral Home is assisting the family.
