    Vern was born August 29, 1931, in rural Hazel Green to Lydia and Joseph Kuhle. He was raised by his mother and step-father, Cletus Eckert. He attended school in Kieler, WI, and at Loras Academy, in Dubuque.

    He married Doris Mary Hilby on February 7, 1950, at Nativity BVM Catholic Church, in Menominee, IL, and spent the next (66) years making a life together and raising a family. His heart broke the day he lost Doris on May 15, 2016.

    Vern was a farmer and carpenter for over (50) years. He built many homes with his brother, Bernard, at Kuhle Construction and later for Schultz Construction. As each of his children became homeowners, there were plenty of remodeling jobs and projects that needed Dad's expertise as well. In his spare time, Dad loved working with his horses, going to grandkids sporting events and of course, a good card game.

    Vern is survived by his children, Pat (Tom) Fleege, Diane O'Shea, Steve Kuhle, Rick (Karen Hartnett) Kuhle, Dan (Claire) Kuhle, Mary Jo (Beaner) Runde, Ron (Carolyn) Kuhle, Kate (Bill) Vickerman, Ken (Jane) Kuhle and Tina (Kimberly Anderson) Kuhle; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a new great-great-grandson; his siblings, Ruth Klein, Edwin (Joyce) Kuhle, Sister Joselda Kuhle, OSF, Bonnie Tranel and Karen (Ed) Buchanan; in-laws, Ione (Ralph) Turman, Joan Hilby, Sister Carol Hilby, OSF, Mary Ann (Paul) Burbach, Jack (Rose) Hilby and Mark Hilby.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Cletus Eckert; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Jerry Kowalski; grandsons, Adam Runde and Alex Kuhle; brother, Bernard Kuhle; in-laws, Joe Klein, Roger Tranel, Jackie Kuhle, and Margie and Bill Burroughs.

    Surviving are a daughter, Jean Ann (David Schmitt) Kaiser, and a son, Duane (Ann) Kaiser, of Dubuque; her grandchildren, Julie (Robert) Pihart, of Minneapolis, Barbara Schmitt, Dan (Oliva) Schmitt and Julie Kaiser, all of Dubuque, and Keith (Joy) Kaiser, of Peosta, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren, Elliot, Ethan, Alexander, Sydney, Taylor, Gabrielle and Isabelle; a sister, Dorothy Bechen, of Dubuque; a brother, John (Mary Lou) Hinderman, of Dubuque; and four sisters-in-law, Kate Hinderman, of Florida, Fran Hinderman, of Platteville, Wis., Rita Hinderman, of Dickeyville, and Marie Hinderman, of Arizona.

    A memorial service will be held at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd, on Friday, April 4, 2014, her 90th birthday, at 7:00 p.m. Family and friends may gather after 4:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home until time of services. Private family burial will be in Linwood Cemetery .

    Dorothy was the daughter of Joseph and Theresa Hinderman of Dickeyville, WI. She was born on April 4, 1924 and grew up in Dickeyville.

    Dorothy learned to sew when she was 8 years old and had a passion for sewing ever since. She loved making quilts and giving them to family and friends.

    Dorothy married Lester Bechen of La Motte, Iowa on June 13, 1946. They lived in Dickeyville until they moved to Dubuque in 1959.

    They were snow birds from 1983 till Lesters death in 2001. Dorothy then moved to Arizona year – round. She returned to Dubuque in 2009 and lived at Mt. Pleasant Home before going to Dubuque Nursing & Rehab.

    Dorothy is survived by six sons, Ken of Absoaroke, MT, Rick(Carlene) of Brooklyn,WI, Ron(Anita) of Belleville, WI, Sam(Sue) of Dubuque, IA, Jim(Anita) of Lodi, WI, and Denis(Liz) of Goodyear, AZ. Her grandchildren; Angela (Doug) Hanley, Sheri Moritz, Ashley (Allison) Foxborn, Luke Bechen,Isaac (Erin) Bechen, Adam Bechen, Mary Bechen, Sara Bechen, Steph (Kyle) Cook, Justin (Courtney) Bechen, Jason (friend Tiffany) Bechen, Matthew Bechen, Robert Thario and Kristen Thario. Great grandchildren; Emma Hanley, Hannah Rowerdink, Morgan Walsh, Elliott Foxborn, Lauren Bechen and Reagan Wissel. Dorothy is also survived by her brother, John (Mary Lou) Hinderman, sisters-in-law Marie Hinderman and Fran Hinderman and many nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Bechen; her brothers Carl, Edward, Vincent, Lavern, and Alphonse; her sisters Marie and Bertha; and great-grandson, Reed Hanley.
