She was born Jan. 26, 1929, in Jerseyville, the only daughter of the late William H. and Thelma (Brown) Thurston. She graduated in 1947 from Jersey Township High School in Jerseyville, and married Louis Crotchett shortly after that on Sept. 12, 1948, at the Kane Baptist Church, and he survives. Betty was employed at the Kane Post Office for many years, eventually becoming the postmaster for several years before her retirement. Surviving in addition to her husband, Louis, are three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Tom Woolsey of West Palm Beach, Fla., Barb Alexander of Jerseyville and Cindy and Doug Bean of Kane; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Mary Crotchett of Carrollton, David and Sherry Crotchett of Jerseyville and Brian Crotchett of Kane; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Betty Thurston and John and Mary Jo Thurston, all of Jerseyville, and William and Judith Thurston of Branson, Mo; and her mother-in-law, Emeline Crotchett of Kane. Betty was preceded in death by a brother, James Thurston. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. Tuesday until time of services at 11 a.m. at the Kane Baptist Church. The Rev. David Arnold will officiate. She will be laid to rest in Kane Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Kane Baptist Church.

Gene was a United States Army Veteran, serving our country honorably in the Vietnam War.

He worked for many years as a self-employed mechanic and in his free time enjoyed hunting and fishing and would argue just about any issue with anyone willing to listen. Most notably, he was known for his giving personality.

Surviving are two children, Gina Rene Crotchett, formerly of Kane and Christopher Crotchett, and his fiance Katie Morrow of Kane; as well as a sister, Joan Youngblood of Jerseyville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Harriette in 2009; as well as a brother, Melvin P. "Pat" Crotchett.

Cremation rights have been accorded and no services are planned at this time.

Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.
