Married Name4 January 1844As of 4 January 1844,her married name was Kiefer.
Married Name4 January 1844As of 4 January 1844,her married name was Keifer.
  • Sarah Jane Harris was born on 9 October 1824 at Richland, Ohio.
  • She was the daughter of Jonathan Whitaker Harris and Abigail C. Cracroft.
  • Sarah Jane Harris married John Henry Kiefer, son of George Philip Keifer and Eva Marcia Roedel, on 4 January 1844 at Richland, Ohio.
  • Sarah Jane Harris died on 1 May 1907 at Spring Green, Sauk, Wisconsin, at age 82 Sarah Jane (Harris) Keifer was born in Richland Co., Ohio on October 9, 1824, and died at Spring Green, Wisconsin, May 1st 1907. She was married to John Henry Keifer, January 4th, 1844 with whom she trod the pathway of life for nearly fifty-six years. To them were born two children, a son and a daughter. She leaves to mourn, her daughter, Mrs. C.W. Farrington, Falls City, Nebraska, three grandchildren, Edwin H. Keifer, Madison, Wisconsin, Fred Farrington and Mrs. E.H. Towle, and one great grandchild, Mary Towle, all of Falls City, Nebraska, also one brother, A.L. Harris of Reedsburg, and two
sisters, Mrs. W. Hood of Spring Green, and Mrs. Twist of Madison. Thus, one by one, our pioneer fathers and mothers are passing away. Aunt Jane, as she was lovingly called by nearly everyone in the place, came to the territory of Wisconsin, in the year of 1846, and with her young husband braved the trials and hardships all settlers at that time had to endure, and at the time of her death was the oldest actual settler in this part of the country, having lived in Sauk Co. almost sixty-one years. She was a member of the old settlers association of Sauk County, many of whom have read with interest and pleasure her sketches of early days published in the Home News of Spring Green. But she has gone to her reward. No more will the familiar face and kindly smile greet us, no more the form, with step growing each year a little slower and more faltering, will be seen among us, and though we know she has rounded out a full life of love and usefulness, yet how hard for the sad heart to say, "Thy will be done." Mrs. Keifer in her early married life embraced the Christian religion, united with the United Bretheren Church and was baptized in that faith. Some years later she united with the Congregational church, of which she was a member at the time of her death. Friends from away who attended the funeral, were the daughter, Mrs. C.W. Farrington, from Falls City, Nebraska; grandson, Edwin H. Keifer, Madison; her brother, A.L. Harris, Reedsburg; a sister, Mrs. Twist and daughter, Miss Ruth of Madison; Mrs. W.H. Harris of Reedsburg; Mrs. L.C. Starr and son Robert, Mineral Point; H.D. Hood and daughter Isabelle, Blue River. Funeral Services were held from the Congregational Church at 10:30 Saturday morning, conducted by the Reverand Harding R. Hogan, and she was laid to rest in the Spring Green cemetery by the side of her husband and son, the latter having preceded her by less than a year.
  • She was buried after 1 May 1907 at Spring Green Cemetery, Spring Green, Sauk, Wisconsin.
  • Her estate was probated on 5 August 1908 at Sauk, Wisconsin.

JOSEPH H. YEAGER, farmer; P. O. Steam Corners; is a native of Lancaster Co, Penn; he is third of a family of seven children; was born October 12, 1844; his parents, William and Harriet (Dase) Yeager, were born and reared in Lancaster Co. His father is a shoemaker by trade, and when a young man walked to Ohio with his "kit " of tools on his back, stopping at various places to work, and earn money with which to defray expenses; his object was to see the country, but unlike the "tramp " of modern times he wished to pay his way. He soon returned to his native county, and in 1852 gathered together his worldly effects and with his family came to this county, where he yet lives. About the year 1860 he relinquished the trade and has since followed farming. On arriving at his majority Joseph commenced business for himself and has followed farming, to which he seems adapted, although he has "run " a threshing machine for ten years. He has had wonderful success; last year he threshed forty-three thousand bushels of gain; this is no doubt owing to the fact that is one of our enterprising men, and has been running his machine with an engine, for the last five years, of which he has always been the engineer. He was married Oct. 10, 1869, to Mary E., daughter of Jacob L. and Catharine Klinefelter. She was born July 10, 1849, in Morrow Co; they have had six children, four are living-May, Daisy D., Edith B. and Clara A. Both he and wife are members of the Evangelical Church; and he was one of the charter members of the "Patrons of Husbandry," of which he has been "Overseer." He owns a farm of eighty acres and is very pleasantly situated.

Census DateLocation
1 October 1850Jefferson, Noble, IndianaAbraham Rohrbach Hosler was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census at Jefferson, Noble, Indiana, living next door to Samuel Hostler (Hosler).1
ABRAHAM HOSLER, Section 36, farmer, P. O. Valley Falls, is a native of Pennsylvania, and was born in York County, January 9, 1818. When fourteen years of age he came to Ohio with his parents, locating in Richland County, and residing there until 1847, when Abraham removed to Noble County, Ind., where he followed
carpentering pursuits up to 1859, when he came to Andrew County,
Mo., and in the spring of 1860 purchased a claim in Jefferson County, Kas., which is now his home. Mr. Hosler was among the early settlers in his locality. He had
many drawbacks to contend with during the war. His stock was run off, stacks of grain burned, and other depredations, which affected him for a few years financially. Being a man of untiring industry, he soon, however, made up for its loss. Mr. H. has been four time
married, his first two wives being deceased. He was married in Ohio to Miss Elizabeth Spencer. By this union he has one child, Mary Catherine. His second wife was
Harriet Diffenbaugh, by whom he had five children--George W., Sarah E., Henry F., Eugene and Damon V. By his third wife, who
was formerly Miss Martha E. May, of Kansas, he had seven children--William T., John C., Dora C., Larry E., James F., Martha A. and Francis A. Mr. Hosler is a carpenter by trade, which he followed for twenty-two years. For three years he carried on business in Kansas,
doing considerable work on the Octagon Hotel in Valley Falls. His present wife was formerly Mrs. I. Leonard of Illinois.
