Marie was born in Black Diamond, Washington on Oct. 5, 1910, to Ferdinand and Alice Cavassa. She and her family came to Chico, CA when she was five years old. She graduated from Compton High School in 1927, then Chico Business School. She met and married Carl A. Johnson in Chico in 1931 while working at Montgomery Wards. At the time Carl worked for Diamond Match Lumber Co. near Sterling City, CA. In 1941 they moved to Scott Valley where he was involved in chrome mining. Several years later he started a logging business that he continued until his retirement in 1978. In 1946 they moved to the current home place where Marie developed a beautiful landmark yard and garden area and maintained it in pristine condition for 50 years. During this time she also raised registered Suffolk sheep, which were purchased primarily by FFA and 4-H members to show in the county fairs from Klamath Falls, OR to Chico. She maintained a flock of 60 or more ewes and was well known in all the northern CA and southern OR auction years where she bought and sold to maintain her flock. Her favorite vacation spots included Little Elk, Sky High, Cliff, Campbell and many other lakes in the Marbles. Each summer for many years she and the family would pack into the mountains for a week or two. Many of the trees and shrubs in her yard came home in her saddlebags as seedlings. Another great enjoyment to her was her orchids and African Violets that bloomed constantly throughout her home. Marie was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge, Chapter 10 Order of the Eastern Star of Etna for over 50 years. In her later years she especially enjoyed the treats and visits from the Eastern Star ladies during the holidays. She is predeceased by her husband, Carl, one brother, five sisters, a niece and a great-granddaughter.
