"Rae" Stephens, age 67, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, due to complications from Multiple Sclerosis. Rae was born on June 26, 1939, in Grant County, to parents Raymond S. and Lucile M. (Fritz) Luher. She graduated from Prairie du Sac schools in 1957, and attended college at the University of Wisconsin- Madison and North Central College in Naperville, Ill. Before her marriage, she worked at Wisconsin Power and Light Company. In 1961, she married John T. Stephens and adopted Carl William Stephens in 1972. She loved to follow Carl's hockey and soccer games. Rae worked for General Time, making timing devices for space rockets, and also at Illinois Bell as a training instructor, teaching people how to use the Centrex phone system. She then embarked on her printing career when she and her husband founded the Ink and Paper Company in Wheaton, Ill. After divorcing in 1975, she returned to Madison and continued in the printing business at American Printing and later at Straus Printing Co. Rae retired due to disability, after many years of struggling with Multiple Sclerosis. For nearly 30 years, she enjoyed her cottage on Lake Wisconsin. She also enjoyed birds, flowers, collecting original artist's paintings, and her family. She was a member of Tempo, Fund Investment Group, Lake Wisconsin Country Club, and the Gourmet Group. Rae is survived by her son, Carl (Susi) Stephens of Madison; sister, JoAnn Steckelberg of Merrimac; brother, Merlin Luher of Prairie du Sac; nieces and nephews, SueAnn (Royce) Belzung, Sandra (Robert) Hogle, Jill (Paul) Schlitz, Kurt (Darci) Steckelberg, and Randal Luher; and sister-in-law, Karen Luher. She was preceded in death by her parents; nieces, Jennifer Luher and Sherril Miotke; and nephew, Mark Steckelberg. A special thank you to her neurologist who took care of her for many years, Dr. Benjamin Brooks; and her internists, Dr. Laurence Crocker and Dr. Mary Thomason. Also to Home Health United, R.R. and Susan Straus, Robert Felland, and Cindy Lease, a caretaker for many years. Further thanks to Syndi Dobson, who helped her in many ways over the years, Diane Gallentine, her former golfing partner, and numerous friends and family. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
