Joseph was aninsurance agent for Berry and Roxbury Mutual, a volunteer at St. Vincent DePaul, and enjoyed winemaking, fishing, hunting, woodworking and refinishingantiques. He was a member of St. Norbert's Catholic Church, the Knights ofColumbus and the Catholic Knights. He was born on Dec. 17, 1926, in Los Angeles. He and his family were interned in 1942 in the Japanese Relocation Camp at Manzanar, Calif. From the camp he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served in the military intelligence during 1945 and 1946.

After the war, he joined the U.S. Public Health Service as a commissioned officer and rose to Navy captain in the 1980s.

Jim attended Drake University, UCLA, USC and received his Ph.D. from Boston University School of Medicine. He joined the University of Montana faculty in 1956 and was professor of the Department of Microbiology for 35 years. He served as chairman of the department for 20 years and was a member of the University Faculty Senate for 20 years.

During his tenure at the university, he published many scientific papers, obtained numerous research grants and was a member of many professional organizations. He traveled, taught and did research internationally. In 1990, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Medicine degree from the Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Medical University, Szeged, Hungary, and was the first American to be so honored. Jim was also very proud of the accomplishments of his many students.

Survivors include his wife Judith Ann of Missoula; and two daughters, Monica and Midori. At his request, no services will be held. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
