Richard Charles Montag
Life EventDateDescription
Birth28 April 1931Richard Charles Montag was born on 28 April 1931 at Portland, Multnomah, Oregon.
He was the son of Henry Octave Montag and Eva McKey.
Marriage21 August 1954Richard Charles Montag married Mary Charlene Daugherity, daughter of Raymond P. Daugherity and Dorothy Claire Conway, on 21 August 1954.
Death5 March 2021Richard Charles Montag died on 5 March 2021 at Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, at age 89 Richard Montag and Charlene Montag, the love of each other's lives, both passed from this world from natural causes within six months of each other in 2021.

Richard, 89, born April 28, 1931, in Portland, Ore., to parents Hank and Eva, passed March 5, 2021.

Charlene, 87, born Nov. 7, 1933, in Southern California to parents Ray and Dorothy, passed Oct. 16, 2021.

Richard and Charlene were survived by four children, Vicki*, Sheila, Barbara, and Edward; five grandchildren, Christina, Michael, Rachelle, Brittney, and Olive; and one great-grandchild, Ramona, with another great-grandchild, Max, who was "in the oven" and born Rachelle in January of 2022. Richard was survived by his sister Carole. *Daughter Victoria (Vicki) passed Aug. 16, 2021 from renal failure and hence survived only Richard.

Richard and Charlene had been married for 67 years after meeting for the first time on a blind date at an USO picnic in Portland, Ore. They fell in love and married shortly after Richard graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Civil Engineering and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.

They moved to California where Richard served a two-year U.S. Air Force commission at Edwards Air Force Base before joining the U.S Air Force Reserve and focusing his career on heavy construction with the family business, CJ Montag & Sons. Richard and Charlene moved their growing family often, following Richard's job assignments on major state funded infrastructure projects across Washington, Oregon, and California. Finally, in 1963, the family planted roots in the Alameda district in N.E. Portland, where they for lived 42 years.

Richard's career evolved from working on construction jobs to estimating them as chief estimator for heavy highway contractors in the Northwest. In addition to being a homemaker, Charlene developed a passion for volunteer work at the children's elementary and high schools libraries. She continued her volunteer work at the Providence Portland Medical Center where she contributed hundreds of hours each year. Charlene was given recognition as the highest contributor of volunteer hours to their library in any one year.

In retirement, Richard and Charlene loved to travel. Hawaii was a favorite annual winter "get-away." They also took cruises and made even more adventurous trips to Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, London, Paris, and Alaska. They will always be deeply missed and loved by their surviving family.

The family would like to thank all the healthcare providers and caregivers for their compassion and service to them during their final years. They will be interred together by family at Willamette National Cemetery.
