Birth7 November 1933Mary Charlene Daugherity was born on 7 November 1933 at Los Angeles, California.
She was the daughter of Raymond P. Daugherity and Dorothy Claire Conway.
Marriage21 August 1954Mary Charlene Daugherity married Richard Charles Montag, son of Henry Octave Montag and Eva McKey, on 21 August 1954.
Death16 October 2021Mary Charlene Daugherity died on 16 October 2021 at age 87 M. Charlene Montag, or "Charley" to her beloved husband, passed at the age of 87 in Portland Oregon on October 16, 2021, with the love and comfort of her children at her side.

Charlene was born in California to Dorothy and Raymond.

On her mother's side, Charlene was a direct ancestor of family who mined and worked various jobs in the "mother lode" valley of California gold in the late 1800s. What was once a thriving gold mining town, Bodie, "America's most notorious ghost town," is now a state park. The house her grandfather lived in through his elder years, and where Charlene visited as a child is still intact today. Charlene had many interesting stories to tell about her time in Bodie before it was designated a park and was only occupied by a few dedicated watchmen and her grandfather.

Charlene grew up with one sibling, her older sister Jean, whom she survived by months prior to her own passing.

Charlene moved to Portland, Oregon with her family during her high school years. She was a lover of animals. She rode horses as a child and was quite persuasive with her parents to adopt pets when the opportunity presented itself. Cats, dogs and even turtles joined the family over the years, continuing with the family of her own. She was especially fond of cats and her final pet, Misty, an abandoned kitten she loved later in her life.

Charlene was attending college in Portland and studying to be a teacher when she met the love of her life, Richard, also a college student at another Oregon university studying Civil Engineering and Air Force ROTC. Their meeting was fate, delivered by friends who set them up on a blind date at a picnic.

Charlene and Richard were married shortly after Richard's graduation. First as a couple and then a growing family, they moved along the West Coast where they lived near Richard's work on major infrastructure projects and served his time in the Air Force.

During this time, Charlene gave birth to her four children before finally settling down in Portland where they lived in the same family home for over 40 years.

Victoria was born in California. Two years and two moves later, Sheila was born in Washington State where Richard was working on construction of the Ice Harbor Dam. Barbara followed shortly behind in Washington. In the year in which the family home was bought in Portland, Edward was born.

Charlene was a lover of books. She found satisfaction in performing volunteer work in the libraries of schools her children attended. Later, Charlene was a volunteer at the Providence Medical Center library where she earned the top spot for contribution of volunteer service hours.

Charlene enjoyed traveling with Richard in their retirement years. Together they treasured annual trips to Hawaii during winter months, but also traveled across Europe, to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, Central America and the Panama Canal, and cruise trips to Alaska.

Charlene and Richard were Portland Trailblazer season ticket holders throughout their championship Era. They enjoyed Broadway plays, watching old movies, and regularly attended Oregon Pops concerts.

Charlene and Richard shared a deep love and devotion that spanned 67 years of marriage before Richard's passing at 89. She followed him home just 7 months later.

Charlene is survived by three of her four children: Sheila, Barbara, and Eddie, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Vicki, Charlene's first child, passed before her, but will forever be with Charlene and Richard, as a part of her spirit will be interred with theirs.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and healthcare providers who were compassionate in their care of Charlene during her final years. Charlene's ashes will be interred at Willamette National Cemetery with Richard's in late summer 2022. A small service is expected but has not yet been scheduled.
