Death15 October 1944Major Robert Blake Lothrop died on 15 October 1944 at At Sea, Philippines, at age 37 Off the west coast of Palawan, Philippines
In the early morning hours of October 15, Major Robert B. Lothrop, a former post engineer on Fort Mills, Corregidor Island, Philippines, asked to go to the latrine. A West Point gymnast, Lothrop, wriggled out of the porthole and landed in the water. A sentry sounded the alarm, and Lothrop was killed as he swam away from the Arisan Maru, after taking four direct hits. The Japanese sent a launch to retrieve his body and gave the thirty-seven-year-old major – the father of an eight-year-old daughter back home – a formal burial at sea.
