He was the son of Harold Thomas Pfaffle and Astrid Friedaborg Stark.
Marriage2 August 1959Thomas R. Pfaffle married Alice Kay Gilbert on 2 August 1959.
Death25 December 2012Thomas R. Pfaffle died on 25 December 2012 at Orange, California, at age 74 Tom R. Pfaffle, teacher and coach, died of myelofibrois, a bone marrow disease, in his Placentia, Calif., home on Dec. 25, 2012, at age 74. The family was singing "Silent Night" to him as he left his earthly home.

There was a sturdiness and wholesomeness to Tom. He possessed a gift of candor. No one ever doubted where he stood on any controversial question. Tom was thoroughly a man, and a true respecter of manhood in other men. He was a big man with a big heart, a big smile and big dreams.

Thomas Richard Pfaffle was born in Le Mars, to Harold Thomas Pfaffle and Astrid Friedaborg Stark Pfaffle on Sept. 30, 1938. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, and graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1956.

At the age of 12 Tom played on the first Iowa Little League Team at the National League Tournament in Princeton, Ill. He excelled in track and basketball in high school and held the school record in the discus throw of 136 feet for 15 years.

While playing Jr. Legion baseball at the age of 16, Tom was offered a contract to play pro-ball with the St. Louis Cardinals.

He continued his basketball career at Westmar College and in 1964 graduated from North Dakota State University with a bachelor of science degree.

On Aug. 2, 1959, he married Alice Kay Gilbert of Danbury, Iowa at the Danbury Methodist Church. Two daughters blessed this union, Debra and Carol. The family lived in Fargo, N.D., for five years. Tom enjoyed playing fastpitch softball for Kallod Carpet. The team won six North Dakota State Titles.

Tom began teaching and coaching in Wyndmere, N.D., in 1965. After two years, the family moved to California where he continued to teach and coach for 30 years in the Bassett Unified School District.

In retirement Tom was able to hunt, fish, golf, travel and he became an avid Angel's baseball fan. He loved driving to the Midwest to fish with his buddies, stopping along the way to visit, barter, and trade. Each of his grandsons had a special "fishing trip to Minnesota with Pops."

Over the years Tom and Kay traveled to various corners of the earth. One trip took them to Tom's mother's homeland in Sweden.

Those left to cherish memories are his wife, Kay; daughters Debra and Carol; three grandsons; brother, Charles; sister Joan; and nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
