He was born on Feb. 4, 1917, in Cornelia, Harrison Township, Grant County, son of Philip and Margaret (Berg) VanNatta. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Liz" Ludwig on March 31, 1941, in Dubuque; she preceded him in death on Sept. 25, 2003. Roy worked for the Pet Mill Company in Shullsburg and Platteville. He delivered oil for the Bailey Oil Company, Lancaster, and he later worked at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in maintenance where he retired in 1981. As a young man he enjoyed hunting coon and deer. Roy loved to fish, and he fished all around southwest Wisconsin and on the Mississippi River. Surviving are his two children, Melvin "Tiny" (Peg) VanNatta, of Platteville, and Shirley (Al) Dove, of Richland, Mich; six grandchildren, Eric (Linda) VanNatta, Amy Gardner, Julie VanNatta, Randy VanNatta, Russel (Jessica) Dove and Adam Dove; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mabel Johnson, of Platteville. He also was preceded in death by a son, Roger in 1962; his parents; five brothers; and five sisters. A Roy VanNatta Memorial Fund has been established. The Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home is serving the family.
