Death2 August 2017Alphonse J. Alt died on 2 August 2017 at age 99 Alphonse J. Alt, age 99, of Plain/Spring Green passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Greenway Manor in Spring Green, with nurse Lori Vorndran by his side. Allie/Al was born on February 14, 1918, on the Alt family farm in Sauk County, the son of John and Katherine (Decker) Alt.

Allie and Florence Liegel were classmates at St. Luke’s School. After 8th grade graduation, both started working. Several years later, Florence would drive her father’s Buick past where Allie was working in the fields with Elwood Maxwell and give a little wave. At Elwood’s encouragement, Allie borrowed the car to drive up to the Liegel farm to ask Florence on a date. We all started with Flo’s little wave.

Before they got married, Allie and Florence both worked in Spring Green on the Evans and Peterson farms and at the Cavanaugh Lumber Mill. On January 31, 1940, they were united in marriage at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Plain. They celebrated 63 years of marriage before Florence died on May 4, 2003. He was a devoted, lifelong member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church.

Allie and Florence worked together as farming partners until 1967, giving up farming after Allie was struck by lightning. Allie also worked at Badger Army Ammunition Plant and retired from the Village of Plain as a maintenance worker in the days of twice-a-week garbage collection using a raised flatbed truck and sweeping the streets by hand.

Allie and Florence spent countless days together fishing the trout streams in Bear Valley and gardening. They worked together on woodworking projects with Allie doing the cutting and sanding and Flo doing the finishing and decorating. Flo was a great quilter but working quietly behind the scenes Allie was the precision cutter of the fabric squares. He was known for his tree and shrub trimming expertise. Allie lived the high life by following doctor’s orders to have one beer a day, even though his first bottle always seemed to have a hole in it.

Allie is survived by 6 children and their spouses: Edith (Richard) Hochstetter of Albany; Joanne (John) Acomb of Beloit; Alice (David) Dischler of Neshkoro; George (Jeanne) Alt of North Freedom; Margie (Jim) Ries of Belleville; Allan (Sue) Alt of Cross Plains, a son-in-law Richard Conway of Dodgeville, a daughter-in-law Carol Alt of Madison, 27 grandchildren and their spouses, 49 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandsons, sisters Erna Crosby of Sauk City and Kay Imberg of Sun Prairie, sisters- and brothers-in-law Viola Paulus of Plain, Dolores Liegel of Spring Green, George (Marcie) Liegel of Plain and Vern (Bernie) Liegel of Spring Green, nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends, including his fellow residents at Greenway Terrace.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Florence; daughter Mary Conway; son Robert; infant daughter Catherine; a great granddaughter Gabrielle Prestigiacomo; a grandson-in-law Tim Farmer; sisters Mary (Frank) Schweitzer, Hilda Lehner, Dorothy (John) Roth; brothers Edward (Elsie) Alt; Andrew (Lorraine) Alt, John (Florentine) Alt, Don Alt; sisters- and brothers-in-law Orville Crosby, Alfred Imberg, Ed (Alma) Liegel, Alfred (Bernice) Liegel, Alma (Ray) Brickl, Marian (Alvin) Layton, Edward Paulus, Florian, Victor, Joseph and Ralph Liegel.

Over the years, two of Dad’s favorite meals out were a burger and a beer at Emil’s I-Diehl Tap and whatever Dorothy Shanahan was serving for a family gathering. Dad taught us many life lessons and showed us how to grow old gracefully. One of his greatest gifts to us was taking care of Mom on his own, before we realized how serious her condition was.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Plain. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 7, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church and again on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Ellen Wermuth, Agrace Hospice for their compassionate care during the last days of Dad’s life, and most of all the staff at Greenway Terrace for filling Dad’s final eight years with loving care, laughter, fun activities, great meals, and a real home environment.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Luke’s Cemetery Fund, American Cancer Society, or Agrace Hospice. The Richardson-Stafford Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Father*Joseph Schwartz

Name TypeDateDescription
Married Name1851As of 1851,her married name was Liegel.
Life EventDateDescription
Birth18 October 1828Barbara Schwartz was born on 18 October 1828 at Bavaria, Germany.
She was the daughter of Joseph Schwartz and Elizabeth (?).
Marriage1851Barbara Schwartz married John Baptist Liegel, son of Peter Liegl and Elizabeth Stoudner, in 1851.
Death20 December 1912Barbara Schwartz died on 20 December 1912 at Wisconsin at age 84 Pioneer Mother Called. Died, at her home in Plain, Sauk county, Wisconsin, December 20th, 1912. Mrs. John B. Liegel, Sr., aged 84 years, two months and two days. Barbara Schwatrz was born October 18th, 1828, at Intergrafenried, Waldmuenchen, Oberpfalz, Bavaria, Germany. In 1853 she was united in marriage with John B. Liegel and this union was blessed with eight children, of whom four have died. In the year 1854, Mr. and Mrs. Liegel left Germany for America and landed at New York. They made their home in that state one year, Mr. Liegel working in a brick yard. The next year, 1855, they left New York, traveling by railway as far as Madison, where the railroad ended, and from there they walked, carrying with them a child one year of age, and numerous articles which they needed on the journey. Arriving in the town of Franklin penniless and homeless, Mrs. Liegel and her husband found employment at George Neuheisel's for about a year, after which they took up a homestead of forty acres, which is now known as the Joseph Bernerel place. Here they at once set to work cutting logs to build themselves a log cabin and here they spent eight years of hard toil and labor preparing the wilderness for cultivation. After having cleared some of the land, they used a grubber in place of a plow, for they did not have the means to purchase machinery, horses or oxen at that time. At the end of eight years they bought a small farm consisting of sixty acres, a part of which was improved, the remainder being wilderness and swamp. At present a portion of this farm is included within the limits of the village of Plain. On this farm they built a frame house which was their home until in 1887 they retired from active work, selling the farm to their son, and reserving a small tract whereon they built the home where she dwelt until our Lord called her to her new home which he had prepared for her in heaven. Mrs. Liegel had been in excellent health for one of her age, having been able to give personal attention to her household duties up to the last, and death came without warning, from pulmonary apoplexy, at 10:45 p. m, she having retired in her usual health. She leaves to mourn her loss her aged husband, two sons, George and John B., two sisters (daughters), Mrs. John Ring and Mrs. Jacob Heiser, and one brother, Joseph Schwatrz, all of Plain, besides thirty-three grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives and a host of friends, all of whom ever remember her moral and Christian life, her love of nature and her love of home and family. The deceased was a kind and loving wife and mother, a true and helpful friend and neighbor, a devoted Christian and a lifelong member of the Roman Catholic church. The funeral services took place at St. Luke's church Monday, where a large concourse of relatives and friends paid their last tribute to her memory, and the interment was made in St. Luke's cemetery. Rev. Father Pesch officiated.
