  • From Commemorative Biographical Record of the Counties of Rock, Green, Grant, Iowa and Lafayette, Wisconsin, publ. 1901 - page 317-318

ULYSSES MILTON HUNGERFORD, of the town of Watterstown, Grant county, is a well-known citizen of the county. He is one of five brothers who served as soldiers in the war of the Rebellion.

Mr. HUNGERFORD was born in Livingston county, N.Y., April 12, 1834, son of Josiah and Elizabeth HUNGERFORD, also natives of Livingston county, where all their children were born. Our subject learned the trade of a carpenter with his father, and attended the district schools of his native county during boyhood. In 1854 the family migrated from their home in Livonia, Livingston Co., N.Y., to Kankakee, Ill., where the father died in November of the same year. The family came thence to Wisconsin, locating at Spring Green and the mother survived to an advanced age, passing away Jan. 6, 1893, in Sauk county, Wis., at the age of nearly ninety.

It was in March, 1854, that our subject went from his native State to Illinois, and in the fall of the following year, 1855, he came to Wisconsin, stopping at Spring Green, Sauk county. In the spring of 1856 he removed to Crawford county, remaining there until August, 1857, when he went to Grant county, where, on Aug. 30, 1857, he was married to Sarah CARSON, daughter of Lott and Margaret CARSON, early settlers of Wisconsin, formerly of Lafayette, Ind. Mrs. HUNGERFORD was born Oct. 9, 1836, in Tippecanoe county, Ind., and came to Wisconsin in 1854 with her parents. Soon after his removal to Grant county Mr. HUNGERFORD became a permanent resident of the town of Watterstown.

On Dec. 28, 1863, our subject enlisted in the 6th Wisconsin Light Artillery, and in February of the following year the command proceeded to Huntsville, Ala. In June, 1864, the command started to join the army of Gen. Sherman, which was attacking Atlanta, and was detailed to guard the railroad bridge near Cartersville, while the siege was in progress. When Sherman started for the sea Mr. HUNGERFORD went with his command to Nashville, and took part in the important events at that place under Gen. Thomas. From Nashville the command proceeded to Chattanooga, and from there to Madison, Wis., where it was discharged in July, 1865. Although not wounded, Mr. HUNGERFORD lost an eye in the service, by accident, and suffered severely from scurvy, from the effects of which his health has never fully recovered.

The eldest brother of Ulysses M. HUNGERFORD, Eugene C., was also a soldier. Born April 25, 1832, he was at the time of his enlistment a student in the Wisconsin State University, at Madison. In 1861 he entered the service, enrolling in Company H, 5th Wis. V.I., for three months, and after his honorable discharge re-enlisted. He was killed May 3, 1863, at the storming of Fredericksburg, under Gen. Burnside. This gentleman was a gallant soldier, and his death was greatly deplored. Edwin R. HUNGERSFORD, the second brother of our subject, and third in the order of birth, enlisted in August, 1862, in the 6th Wisconsin Light Artillery, and died at Corinth, Miss., the same year. Thomas J. HUNGERFORD, the next in order of birth, was born Dec. 20, 1840, and enlisted in October, 1861, when the battery was organized, serving until October, 1864. Owing to his arduous service, his health was broken, and he died Aug. 15, 1881. Addison HUNGERFORD, the fifth of this family to enter the service of the United States, was born March 7, 1845, and enlisted in the 47th Wis. V.I. in 1864, serving until the close of the war. He is now residing at Evansville, Wis. There were also two daughters in the family of Josiah and Elizabeth HUNGERFORD: Martha, the eldest of the family, born July 14, 1830, died Oct. 29, 1865; Harriet E., born Aug. 15, 1836, died Dec. 2, 1865.

Mr. and Mrs. HUNGERFORD have a pleasant home, many friends, and enjoy the fruits of their early industry. Mr. HUNGERFORD is an esteemed member of the local G.A.R. post, and can look back with pleasure on his career, both as a soldier and as a private citizen.

Death11 March 1905Daniel P. Freeborn died on 11 March 1905 at Lima, Rock, Wisconsin, at age 79 Daniel P. Freeborn was born in Lockport, N. Y., May 2, 1825, and died at his home in Lima, Wis., March 11, 1905. Brother Freeborn came to Wisconsin about 1845, Oct. 6, 1853, he married Amy A. Of his near relatives his wife, two sons, one adopted daughter, two sisters and five grandchildren survive him.
Brother Freeborn became a Christian in his youth and united with a First-day Baptist church. One day he was conversing with his employer about the Sabbath and asked him where he could find the Bible authority for keeping the first day for the Sabbath. The answer was, "Daniel, you can not find it." This led to an investigation which resulted in his becoming a Sabbath keeper. Soon after this he united with the Seventh-day Baptist church at Milton, Wis., and in 1875 he became a constituent member of the Seventh-day Baptist church in Milton Junction, Wis.
He was a man of strong religious convictions, sought in every way to be a consistent Christian; believed the teachings of the Bible to be the rule of life, and that their teachings were given by the authority of God; and therefore it was man's place to implicitly obey. His character was formed upon this basis and for that reason he was a devout church member, a good neighbor and one in whom the people had confidence. Life EventDateDescription
Birth21 July 1826Amy Ann Burdick was born on 21 July 1826 at Alfred, Allegany, New York.
Marriage6 October 1853She married Daniel P. Freeborn, son of Christopher Freeborn and Mary Seton, on 6 October 1853.
Death10 August 1911Amy Ann Burdick died on 10 August 1911 at Lima, Rock, Wisconsin, at age 85 Amy Ann Burdick was born in Alfred, N. Y., July 21, 1826, and died in the Town of Lima, Wis., August 10, 1911. She had passed her eighty-fifth milestone just twenty days before her death.
Her parents were among the first settlers in this country, coming from the East seventy years ago when the subject of this sketch was fifteen years of age. The Burdick family was a strong and influential one. Mrs. Freeborn was the last to go, but there are many members of the next generation, men and women who are good citizens and helpful members of society.
She was married Oct. 6, 1853, to Daniel P. Freeborn. They made their new home at Utica, but in 1855 they remove to Lima where they lived happily for fifty years, until the husband's death in 1905, and where Mrs. Freeborn lived until her death.
She was baptized in 1868 and joined the Milton Seventh-day Baptist church. When the Milton Junction church was organized she became a constituent member and lived in the fellowship of that church to the end of life. She was a quiet woman, a woman of few words, but a strong and constant character, one who was appreciated most by those who knew her best. She died in her old home where she had spent so many peaceful years, tenderly cared for in the closing days of her life by her son Oscar, and his family. The other children are: Irving L. of New Auburn, Wis., and Mrs. Sarah E. Griggs of Spencer, Ia.
The funeral services were conducted in the Seventh-day Baptist church at the regular hour of service Sabbath morning. Pastor A. J. C. Bond took for his text, Ecclesiastes 11:1, "Cast thy bread upon the waters," 12:1 "Remember now thy Creator, in the days of thy youth;" 12:6, 7, "Before the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern, Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was; and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it."
