She was born on February 5, 1917 in Cazenovia, the daughter of Frank M. and Henrietta (Mohelnitzky) Duren. She was an elementary school teacher who taught in rural one room school houses in Richland County. She played banjo and piano in the family orchestra, Frank Duren and His Masters of Swing. It was at one of those dance jobs in Loganville that she met her future husband, Paul L. Soltwedel and they were married on June 11, 1941. They first operated the Soltwedel Hotel and Dance Hall in Loganville, and later operated Soltwedel’s Store in Cazenovia. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary McNamara-Jasper Post 491 in Cazenovia, a lifelong member of St. Anthony dePadua Parish where she was a choir director for many years, and a member of St. Anne’s Altar Society. She loved every member of her family and passed on to them her love of music.

Irene is survived by:

Mary (Ron) Barefield of McFarland,

John (Ellen) Soltwedel of Hillpoint;

Six Grandchildren: Catherine (Douglas) Moore, Daniel (Karen) Dieter, Paul (Maureen) Soltwedel, Kimberly (David) Upton, Rebecca Barefield and Philip (Kim Hoffmann) Barefield;

10 Great-Grandchildren;

A sister: Joanne Duren of Tucson, Arizona;

Sister-in-law: Connie Giacalone of Ironton;

Many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Lucille Richart and Marcella Anderson and three brothers, George, Robert and James Duren.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Irene J. Soltwedel will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Friday, July 20, 2012 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Germantown with Father Wesley Janowski officiating. Burial will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at the Cazenovia Chapel. A rosary will be prayed at 7:30 P.M. Friends may also call on Friday from 10:00 A.M until the time of the service at the church. Memorials of remembrance may be made to the Legion Auxiliary.

The Farber Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
