John was born Oct. 18, 1927 in Hawarden, Iowa to John Sr. and Martha (Twillman) Luschen. He attended Hawarden school and graduated in 1946. John was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1946, and was stationed in Kokura, Japan. John was honorably discharged in 1947. He married Dorothy Witt on June 3, 1948 at St. John's Lutheran Church in LeMars. He worked in the service department at the Chevrolet dealership in LeMars from 1948 to 1961. In 1961 he began working for Well's Dairy as a route salesman. In 1989, he retired after 29 years with the dairy. John was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of LeMars. He was an ardent supporter of Bulldogs athletics. He also enjoyed watching and listening to sports and camping, playing cards. John was very proud of his children and the loved being grandpa.



Survivors include his beloved wife of 54 years, Dorothy; two children, Renae and Curt Buss and Keith and Mary Luschen all of LeMars; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Plueger of LeMars, Cleone and husband LeRoy Anderson of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Winnifred Ten Napel; two grandchildren, Darbi Buss and Alex Luschen.

Edwin Melvin Ten Napel was born June 22, 1916, in Clear Lake, S.D., the son of H.E. and Mary (Borgman) Ten Napel. After moving to the Sioux Center area at a young age, he attended country school through the eighth grade.

Edwin then moved to California for a short time where he worked in an airplane manufacturing plant during the early 1940s. Returning to the family farm, he worked alongside his father and also ran a local gas station in Ireton.

Edwin married Winifred Luschen on Dec. 7, 1945. They lived and farmed in the Ireton area until his retirement, when they moved to town.

Edwin enjoyed helping his sons on the farm, camping, fishing, and working in his yard and garden. His favorite pastime was working in his tool shed. Edwin could fix just about anything and family, friends, and neighbors kept him busy with a great many things to fix.

In his final years, Edwin resided in the Morningside Manor of Alcester, S.D.

He is survived by three sons and their wives, Dennis and Diane, Gary and Glenda, and Robert and Cheryl, all of Ireton; a daughter and her husband, Ruth and Randy Hoekstra of Maurice; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mildred Lehea of Tea, S.D., Mary Swartout and Arlene Reuter, both of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.

Edwin was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred; a daughter, Mary; his parents, H.E. and Mary; three sisters, Nelvina Zink, Bernice DeVries, and Esther Wells; and two brothers, Lawrence and Robert Lee.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ireton with the Rev. Marcel Kohlmeyer officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Ireton.

He married Ruthmary Wallem in 1973 to whom he was devoted for 45 years until her passing in 2018. Vern and Ruth enjoyed many trips to Georgia to visit family, with Vern eventually making it his home in 2023. He was a man of strong faith whose gentle presence was felt by all who knew him.

Vern is survived by his son, Joseph (Kristen) Ruhland; granddaughter, Madeline; grandson, William; brother, Kenneth Ruhland; sister, Bobbie (Jim) Koch; brothers-in-law, Arvene (Marge) Wallem and Loren Wallem; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by Ruthmary; infant daughter, Kelly; his parents; and his sisters-in-law, Alice Ruhland, LaVonne Wallem, Charlotte Wallem and Elaine Harris.

Friends may call on St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 1240 Nachreiner Ave, Plain, WI 53577 for a visitation on Tuesday, January 20, from 10:00 to 11:00a.m. followed by a Mass of Catholic Burial at 11:00a.m. with Fr. Luke Syse officiating. A burial ceremony will follow at St. Luke’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Plain, WI.
