		A LETTER FROM JOSEPH KOUBEK IS IN EMILY'S NOTES Joseph Racek was a blacksmith, who met Emily when serving as an apprentice blacksmith to her father, at Immendorf in present-day Austria. In those days, young man served their apprenticeships to various masters to gain a variety of experiences. They traveled around to different towns and generally lodged with the man to whom they were apprenticed. After Joseph became a full blacksmith, he had his own apprentices at Raffelhof in present—day Austria where Joseph worked and lived. On 20 February 1888, Joseph Racek, at age 18, completed three years of basic training as a blacksmith, "during which time his behavior was good; he was industrious and faithful, therefore during this time he gained thorough knowledge and workmanship so he could be proclaimed as a bonafide blacksmith." His certificate is stamped in the village of Terezov near Hodonin, in present-day Austria. Then Joseph started moving around, gaining experience by working in Durnkrut in 1888, Mistelback in 1889, Eferding ?) in 1890, to Ganserndorf until 1893, to Mailberg Muhlberg?) until 1895, and to Immendorf on 28 May 1895, where Emily Radousch’s father, Frantisek, was the blacksmith. All of these places were in Austria near the present. Czech border. On June 25, 1896, Joseph was given a certificate allowing him to "enter into a blacksmith business" because he had demonstrated a "good know knowledqe of hoof and jaw fittings and good skills in preparing and applying horseshoes. On November 22 of that same year of 1896, Joseph and Emily were married in Vienna, Austria, in the Vienna Reformation Church. In the spring of 1898, Joseph and Emily left Immendorf to move a few miles to Raffelhof, near the village of Wullersdorf, Austria. Raffelhof was a large farm[ing operation of perhaps 350 acres employing more than 200 workers. It also had facilities for processing sugar beets arid chicory. In 1977, residents of Raffelhof said that it was 400 years old at that time and was owned by the large Catholic Abbey at Melk, Austria. ) Joseph was the blacksmith and the family had a two-room apartment in the housing complex that was part of the farm. This may not sound like much, but the story is that in some cases, four families shared one room! The blacksmith was a relatively important. person in an operation like this because he was in charge of the machinery, both for the farm and the factory. In 1899 Joseph received a certificate showing that he was qualified to service steam boilers, which were used at Raffelhof . The blacksmith shop was, directly across the compound from the Racek‘s apartment. The compound was oblong with buildings completely surrounding an inner courtyard. As the years went by and Joseph and Emily had four sons, they worried about the military service required by the Austro- Hungarian Empire, in w[hich they lived. Joseph had served his required military time in the infantry and [the artillery, ending as a gunner operating a canon. I don’t know if this was full time or merely in the active reserves.) He was also required to serve in the Home Guard until Dec. 32, 1911. Since he immigrated in 1909, he evidently didn’t. serve out his time. His younger brother, Ludwiq Racek, who immigrated with Joseph and Emily, must have been in the active reserve forces because he had to sneak out of the country by pretending to be a horse trader looking for horses to buy.) Joseph and Emily had heard about the opportunities in America from Joseph’[s older brother, Frank Racek, who had been in Wisconsin for some years and had purchased his own farm. So, in March of 1909, Joseph quit his job and the family immigrated to America along with Joseph’s younger brother and his family. When they boarded their ship, the Frankfurt, in Bremen Germany, they had $332 with them for their start in America. If something happened to them, the person to notify was Franz Radousch in Habry Kabry?), Bohemia. Upon landing in Baltimore, April 22, 1909, they went directly to Merrimac, Wisconsin, where brother Frank was already located on his own farm. Joseph found that the blacksmith work which he could find in the area would not. pay what. he needed for his family, so he went to work in a near by quarry . Within a month the family moved into a rented farmhouse in Sumpter Township west of Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. After purchasing the minimum furniture they needed, Emily was very worried because they had only $40 left out. of their savings. But. they had good neighbors, the Eli $hoephoerster family, who were exceptionally friendly and helpful as were others, such as the Preuss’ and Waterburys. When winter came and Joseph couldn’t work in the quarry, he switched to working for nearby farmers, eventually working for all three men mentioned. After working hard for several years and saving every thing they could, Joseph and Emily were able to purchase a farm in the Witwen, Wisconsin, area. They farmed until 1932 when Joseph a[nd Emily sold the farm to their son Frank Racek and retired to a home at 509 Washington St. , Sauk City, Wisconsin. According to his sons, Joseph was a hard taskmaster when it. came to working the farm. He also required [honestly and high moral standards of them . His grandchildren remember him as a kindly man who raised white rabbits [He sold the fur] and grew a variety of fruits arid vegetables on his property in Sauk City. He was very interested in gardening, trying various experiments such as grafting a branch of one fruit tree to another , in an effort to produce a different variety of fruit. He was very proud when he was able to grow an unusually large fruit or vegetable, such as the tall corn shown in the photograph. Include photo in book ) Joseph was also known to play a harmonica on occasion. Emily was exceptionally kind—hearted. When people admired one of her possessions, she often gave it to them. A sad story would bring tears to her eyes. After World War II she sent. many Care packages to her relatives in Czechoslovakia and Austria who were desperately in need of food and supplies. She was proud of her crocheting ability, a skill which she learned in school during her childhood in Bohemia. Although much of her work was in doilies and table and dresser runners, she also crocheted large tablecloths and bedspreads for many Sauk City people. In addition she made dress yokes, bedroom slippers, attractive potholders and lacy baskets which She would starch with sugar water. At Easter time she colored eggs for her grandchildren the old—fashioned way — with onion skins. She usually had Some delicious kolaches on hand for visitors, made either with cottage cheese or poppy seeds or other goodies. Her apple strudel was another treat, with the pastry stretched paper thin before being rolled. When she served a formal dinner, the first. course was always liver ball soup, something any grandchild would expect to dislike. But — Surprise! Surprise! Isaac A. Hoxie died on 24 October 1903 Isaac A. Hoxie, aged 78 years, died of heart disease at his home on First Street, Saturday morning, Oct. 24, 1903, about 9 o'clock. The deceased was born in Piscataquis county, Maine, and was the son of Allen Hoxie, a pioneer settler of this county. With the exception of a few years he has been a resident of this county since 1846. The family first settled at Cooksville, where I. A. was engaged at work in various branches of carpentering and building for a considerable time, making a speciality of the manufacture of sash, blinds and doors. He later became a resident of Stoughton, where for some time he pursued his trade and in 1864 became
connected with the "Reporter" a newspaper of that place. Two years later in 1866 he removed to this city and established the "Review" continuing his connection with this paper until 1868 when disposing of this business he went to Cresco, Iowa, where he became proprietor of the "Times" of that place. Remaining in Iowa until 1870 he once more returned to this city and again became editor and proprietor of the "Review." For a greater number of consecutive years than any other man in Rock county in a similar position he had charge of this paper, until failing health compelled him to discontinue active work, but he has continued the printing business in a small way up to the day of his last
sickness, for he never gave entirely up until a few days previous to his death; always active and persevering in all that he undertook. In 1850, Mr. Hoxie was united in marriage with Miss Sarah A. Rollins, a native of St. Albans, Me., and of this union was born one son, Wilbur, both of whom have preceeded him to the promised land; he was married to his present widow Mrs. Anna Cook on Oct. 1, 1897. Two widowed sisters still remain in this city, Mrs. GEo. Backenstoe and Mrs. Charles Howard.
The funeral was largely attended in the M. E. Church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and the remains found a last resting place in our city cemetery; Rev. James Churm officiating.

Benjamin Sargent Hoxie was born in Orneville, Maine on August 6, 1827 and he first came to the nearby Rock County community of Cooksville, Wisconsin in the summer of 1846. Here Hoxie developed a considerable local reputation as an architect and builder and his earliest identified Rock County project is his own house in Cooksville on Webster Street, which is a small but charming vernacular form, brick, cruciform plan house that has Gothic Revival style massing but flat-arched windows.(1) By this time, Hoxie had married and he and his wife, Ellen, had three daughters who would all survive them.
