Death24 March 2022Mary Elizabeth Weitzel died on 24 March 2022 at age 99 Mary Elizabeth Burt, 99, affectionately known as "Betty", received her wings and flew into the arms of her loving God on March 24, 2022. We can only imagine the joy she felt as Jesus welcomed her into her eternal home.

Betty was born at her parents' home on November 19, 1922 in Bear Valley, Wisconsin, the youngest of Anthony and Lily Weitzel's five children. She grew up on the family's dairy farm during the Depression. Faith, family and hard work were values that remained important to her all her life. She grew to be a beautiful woman, a devoted wife, mother, aunt, friend, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

In her early 20's, she moved to La Crosse, where on Valentine's day, 1943, she met the love of her life, a young, charming soldier named Paul Charles Burt. After WW II, they married and moved to Pennsylvania. They were blessed with three children, Paul, Susan and Larry. Betty loved being a stay at home Mom. She was actively involved in her children's school, in her church and the local community.
In 1962, a career change for Paul necessitated a move to Kankakee, Illinois and then to Milwaukee. She found a new career there teaching adult education classes and sharing her love of the fabric arts.

In her retirement, she and Paul traveled in the U.S. and Germany until Paul's death in 1991. In 1995, she moved to Green Bay to be closer to family. She developed a passion for genealogy and spent many joyful hours researching her family history. She also loved attending Learning In Retirement classes with friends at UWGB. She was an active member of St. Jude parish and especially cherished the wonderful ladies she met in the Special Friends group.

Her kind and gracious nature imbued everything she did. The greatest gifts she passed on to us are her love of family and the joy of making a house a home. The smell of her homemade bread, the taste of delicious soups, stews and desserts will live long in the memories of her children and grandchildren. She also shared with us many of her favorite projects including crocheting, knitting and quilt-making. Even into her 80's, she continued using those talents by making blankets that were donated to organizations dedicated to helping children. But what we will miss most is her joyous, loving presence in our lives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her son, Paul (Stoney); her parents, her sister and brothers and her granddaughter, Jessica. She is survived by her remaining children, Susan (Austin) McGuan and Larry Burt; her grandchildren: Ryan (Lindsay) McGuan and Bridget (Paolo) Pieri, all of Green Bay; Jon Burt, Marietta, GA; Jennifer (Greg) Sova, Caledonia, MI; Katie Burt, Chicago, IL; and eight great grandchildren: Regan, Molly and Emma McGuan; Maggie, Ethan, Andrew and Macy Sova; and Chiara Pieri; her nieces, Rita Kay Klein, Ruth Ann Barry and her nephews Ken Weitzel and Jim Lewis and grand nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the wonderful employees of Unity Hospice, Forest Glen Assisted Living and Good Shepherd Home in Seymour, Wisconsin. Our family will be forever grateful to each one of you for your extraordinary kind and loving care to our Mom in her last years. You were amazing!

Friends are invited to gather with the family on Wednesday, April 13th at St Elizabeth Seton Parish, 2771 Oakwood Dr., Green Bay, WI 54304. There will be visitation from 9-11with mass of Christian burial following at 11:00am.
