Burial will be in the Sigel Cemetery in rural Utica, South Dakota. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a rosary at 6:45 PM and a Vigil Service at 7:00 PM.

Pallbearers are Brandon Fiscus, Garrett Cameron, Jeff Walter, Khalid Hussein, Chris Uhing, Sawyer Uhing, and Zach Lopez. Honorary pallbearers are all of Bill’s grandchildren and great grandchildren.

William Joseph Uhing was born on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1934, in Wynot, Nebraska, to William and Bernadine (Frigge) Uhing. He grew up on the family farm near St. James, Nebraska and attended St. James Elementary School. He graduated from Wynot High School as the valedictorian in 1952. Bill turned down a full ride scholarship to college to begin his career in farming. He married Cleopha Mauch on April 20, 1955, in Menominee, Nebraska. They moved to a farm near Niobrara, Nebraska for a short time until moving to their farm north of Yankton, South Dakota in 1962. While Bill was farming, he also worked at Yaggie’s in Yankton for 13 years and then at Gehl Manufacturing for 30 years. He retired from farming in 1997 and Bill and Cleo moved into Yankton. Bill retired from Gehl Manufacturing in 2008.

Bill was a member of St. Agnes Sigel Catholic Church and later Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He enjoyed taking bus trips all over the United States and a plane ride to Vegas. He loved visiting, helping neighbors, and going to Church. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren taking bike rides on the bike trails out by the lake and loved babies.

Survivors include his wife, Cleo Uhing of Menno, South Dakota; nine children: Sharon (Dan) Fiscus of Coleridge, Nebraska; Lynnette Uhing of Yankton; Diane (Don) Cameron of Yankton; Jan (Jim Doerr) Walter of Crofton, Nebraska; Julia (Todd Hauger) Hussein of Yankton; Jean (Rod) Merchen of Yankton; Tom Uhing of Mission Hill, South Dakota; Nicole (Mike) Suhr of Yankton and Mike (Tina) Uhing of Colman, South Dakota; 29 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren with two on the way; six brothers and sisters: Kenneth (Dolorita) Uhing of Wynot, Nebraska; Jeanette Whitney of Guthrie Center, Iowa; Joleen (John) Mannino; Claudette Wieseler; Joyce Salvatori; and Janice (Jack) Meyer all of Bellevue, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons: William Uhing Jr; Joseph Uhing and Timothy Uhing; and three brothers and sisters: Stella Goeken; Elaine Ingberg and Robert Uhing.

He was stationed in the Pacific while serving in the army during World War 11 from Feb. 21, 1945 to Aug. 31, 1946. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Bow Valley, where he also served as a Eucharistic Minister, and a member of the Hartington VFW Post #5283. Caroline "Karen" Ann Heimes was born on November 15, 1944 in Hartington, NE to Ivo and Bernadette (Jansen) Kathol. She grew up in the Hartington & Bow Valley area and went to country elementary school at Tip Top. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1963. Karen then graduated from Mount Marty College in Yankton with a degree in nursing. She began working in the Emergency Room in Medford, Oregon prior to her marriage. She married LaVerle Richard Heimes on July 4, 1970 in Bow Valley, NE. Karen worked in the ER at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton for several years. After raising her 6 children Karen then began working at the nursing homes in Hartington and Coleridge. Karen also provided Home Health and was a hospice volunteer. She was also a Le Leche League Leader. Taking care of others was her life joy. She loved to help anyone she could in any way possible.

Karen is survived by her husband, LaVerle of Hartington; 6 children and their spouses, Janell and Pat Wortmann of Omaha, NE; Bill and Darla Heimes of Hartington, NE; Bob and Michelle Heimes of Hartington, NE; Jane Heimes of Hartington; Mary Heimes of Marshall, Alaska; and Ashley Heimes of Hartington; 8 Grandchildren; 8 brothers and sisters and spouses, Mary Lou and Jack Wolhoy of Yorktown, IA; Bernice and Ron Tramp of Crofton, NE; Yvonne and John Huennekens of Yankton, SD; Virgil and Mary Lou Kathol of Hartington, NE; Janice and Gary Holzbauer of Wagner, SD; Marjorie and the late Jim Climer of Hartington; Rita and Rich Pedersen of Hartington; Lilia Hansen of Omaha, NE.

A public Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, November 30, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with the Rev. Owen Korte officiating. Burial will be at the St. Michael’s cemetery in Hartington. A public visitation will be on Sunday, at church, from 2-4:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday morning, at church, one hour prior to services. Face masks and social distancing will be required for the visitation and funeral. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.

Pallbearers will be Bob Heimes, Bill Heimes, Kyle Suing, Blaise Kathol, James Rodney, Jeff Rodney, Nick Suing, and John Huennekens.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren – Margaret Kathol, Blaise Kathol, Lainey Kathol, Deacon Kathol, Jack Kathol, Annabelle Kathol, James Rodney, Scarlet Nelson, and Ivy Nelson.

Virgil Daniel Kathol was born on January 1, 1953 in Yankton, SD to Ivo Louis and Bernadette (Jansen) Kathol. He grew up north of Hartington and graduated from Cedar Catholic High School in 1971. On May 23, 1975, Virgil married Mary Lou Suing in Constance, NE. In 1974 Virgil went into the trucking business with his father and then a short time later he began his own trucking business – creating Virgil Kathol Trucking, Inc. Virgil has been operating this business for forty plus years. He also farmed and raised cattle.

Virgil belonged to Holy Trinity Catholic Church and enjoyed his 4-wheeler on his farm in Obert, Nebraska. He loved playing cards and was known to have a great sense of humor. Virgil especially loved playing with his nine grandkids.

Virgil is survived by his wife Mary Lou of Hartington; three children Gregg (Beth) Kathol of Bismarck, ND, Kathy (Jeff) Rodney of Lincoln, NE, Peggy Nelson of Sioux Falls, SD; nine grandchildren; seven siblings Mary Lou Wolhoy of Yorktown, IA, Bernice (Ron) Tramp of Crofton, NE, Yvonne (John) Huennekens of Yankton, SD, Janice (Gary) Holzbauer of Wagner, SD, Marjorie Climer of Hartington, NE, Rita (Rich) Pedersen of Hartington, Lilia Hansen (Gregg Jansen) of Omaha, NE; brother-in-law LaVerle Heimes of Hartington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter Traci Kathol; sister Karen Heimes; brother Roger Kathol; brothers-in-law Jack Wolhoy and Jim Climer.
