Bernard Patrick Harrington

M, b. 1 July 1915, d. 23 February 2005
Bernard P Harrington
Life EventDateDescription
Birth1 July 1915Bernard Patrick Harrington was born on 1 July 1915 at Butte, Silver Bow, Montana.
Marriage16 November 1940He married Betty Ann Anderson, daughter of Samuel L. Anderson and Ann Elizabeth Burns, on 16 November 1940 at Silver Bow, Montana.
Death23 February 2005Bernard Patrick Harrington died on 23 February 2005 at age 89 Bernard P. Harrington, a true gentleman and proud Butte Irishman, died Wednesday night surrounded by his loving children.
Bernie was born July 1, 1915, to Irish immigrants, Daniel and Johanna Harrington, both from County Cork. His father died when Bernie was very young and he was raised by his mother, brother Joe and sister Loretta. They taught him about hard work and the true values of family life.

He graduated from St. Mary's School and Boys Central High School, and attended the Butte Business College. He began working at an early age — first selling newspapers, then starting his career with the Anaconda Co. as an elevator operator and finishing up 47 years later as the land coordinator.

He was one of the lucky ones — to meet his true love and soul mate in Betty Ann Anderson. They married Nov. 16, 1940, and together they were blessed with their first five children. Bernie also took over as a special "dad" to his second five children, the Maloney family in 1980.

He didn't have much as a youngster and wanted more for his family consequently, to give them a good home and education. He moonlighted many years as a bookkeeper for several Butte businesses, and in 1947, purchased City Taxi. He operated that business for 53 years, but failing health caused him to sell in 2000 at the age of 87.

Bernie was a kind and caring man, who gave quietly but generously. We will never know the many acts of kindness he gave and it was never a "hand out" but a "hand up" to someone less fortunate. He spent many years as a member of the Knights of Columbus and was proud to be a Fourth Degree knight. He was also a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, Ancient Order of Hibernians and Butte Elks Club. Butte Central sports gave him many hours of pleasure and pain, and he was one of Notre Dame's strongest fans. We knew better than to disturb him during a televised game. His last visit to South Bend was in 2001, and he made it a memorable trip for his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann "Liz"; parents, Daniel and Johanna Harrington; brother, Joseph Harrington; sister, Loretta Harrington Doran; mother-in-law, Ann Anderson; sisters-in-law and brother-in law, Jean Anderson, Lenore Anderson, and Mary Doris and "Babe" Maloney.

Surviving are his loving family; daughter, JoAnn (Bud) Nobili and their children Michael (Rendy), Mark and Brock Nobili and his fiancée, Shannon Dacus, all of California; son, Gary (Meg) and their children TJ (Kelli), Chad of Butte, Dana Shepherd and her husband Dana of Arizona; son, Brian (Margaret) of Butte and Brian's daughter Heather of Idaho; son, Bernie (Lynn) and their children Jase and Kali; son, Shaun and his fiancée Kim Yorgason of Billings; and the Maloneys, Kathy, Sherrie, Lori, "Bubba" (Mary Kay), and Steve (Celine) and their sons Sam and Jackson, all of Butte; and great-grandchildren, Nicolas and Natalie Nobili of California, and Braden and Austin Harrington of Butte; and numerous cousins in Butte and California.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Holy Spirit Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon. Entombment follows in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Burialafter 23 February 2005He was buried after 23 February 2005 at Holy Cross Cemetery, Butte, Silver Bow, Montana.
