Death10 May 2010Roy Alvin Hughes died on 10 May 2010 at Wisconsin at age 66 Roy, age 66, died unexpectedly on Monday at home from a cardiac episode due to a 26-year battle against diabetes. He was born to Hugh & Fern J. (Retzlaff) Hughes. Roy and Sue were married on Dec. 2, 1978, and recently celebrated their 31st anniversary. Roy had a career in building maintenance and retired after 14 years with the USDA. He was a member of the Sun Prairie Masonic Lodge No. 143, in which he was past master and was involved in Scottish Rite and the Zor Shrine. Roy was also a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, the American Institute of Plant Engineers and a lifetime member of the International Crane Foundation. He was active with the Monona Grove High School girls' basketball team for many years. Roy is survived by his wife, Sue; son, William (Dorie) Hughes of Phillips; daughters, Kathie (Derrick) Boyette of Oshkosh, and Deborah Hughes of Hawaii; grandchildren, Britany, Karmen, Ashley and Alexa; brothers and sisters, Ray (Pamela) Hughes, Hugh (Pam) Hughes, Barbara (Leonard) Lawson, Gary Hughes, Donald (Lexie) Hughes and Richard (Carolyn) Wood; father-in-law, Don Simley; brother-in-law, Don (Linda) Simley; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Hughes and Fern J. (Retzlaff) Weigen; and sons, Timothy and Roy Jr. Hughes. Funeral services were held on Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Brad Hughes presiding. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Al Musa for his years of wonderful care. Also to the Dane County Coroner's office and City of Monona EMS and PD. Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Centers assisted with arrangements.

Memorial services will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 16, 2017 at St. George Catholic Church in Hartford. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday, September 15, 2017 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids. Doug was employed with Sanford Hospital for over 31 years. Doug is survived by his wife, Deb Sittig, Hartford; brother, Steve Sittig, Sioux Falls; mother-in-law, Lorna Spielmann, Hartford; brother and sister-in-laws, Gregg and Marsha Schnieder, Sioux Falls, Darrell and Carolyn Spielmann, Hartford; aunt, Helen Stansell, Dell Rapids and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Evelyn Sittig; infant sister, Nyla; grandparents, John and Minnie Odde, Ed and Naomi Sittig; father-in-law, Delbert Spielmann; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
