Death20 August 2017Leonard Alois Fenner died on 20 August 2017 at age 72 Leonard A. “Len” Fenner, age 72 of Arkdale, Wis. formerly of Darlington passed away Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017 at his home. He was born Sept. 5, 1944 in Richland Center the son of Scott and Lucille (Pletzer) Fenner. Len graduated from Darlington High School in 1962. He grew up in Spring Green and later moved to Darlington. Following his graduation from high school he was drafted into the United States Army where he served in Vietnam from 1965 until being honorably discharged in 1967. Len moved to Burlington and began working with GTE Telephone Company for a number of years. He later served for the State Department overseas and in Virginia until his retirement.
Len is survived by his three children: Kimberly (Tom) Burgess of Stephens City, Va., Kelly Whitmore of Occoquan, Va., and Scott (Amber) Fenner of Sun Prairie; eight grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Caroline, Meghann, and Scott Burgess, Ellen (Gabe) Bowers, Cory Whitmore, Carter and Jackson Fenner; two brothers: Carl (Pam) Fenner of rural Darlington and Greg Fenner of Darlington; two sisters: Helen (Jerry) Rhodes of Belmont and Marilyn (Ed) Aebersold; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Wayne Fenner.
Len was a member of Okeechobee American Legion and Okeechobee Garden Club. He loved to golf and was an avid fisherman. Len cherished the time he spent with his family and friends creating memories they will all remember forever. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Erickson Funeral Home with Rev. Joji Reddy of Holy Rosary Catholic Church a branch of Our Lady of Fatima Parish officiating. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. A visitation will be held Monday, Aug. 28, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Erickson Funeral home (508 Main Street, Darlington). A visitation will also be held on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. at the church.

He was born March 27, 1953 in Darlington the son of Scott and Lucille (Pletzer) Fenner. Greg lived in Darlington his entire life and graduated from Darlington High School in 1971.

Greg is survived by one brother: Carl (Pam) Fenner of rural Darlington; two sisters: Helen (Jerry) Rhodes of Belmont, WI and Muz (Ed) Aebersold of Platteville, WI; a sister-in-law: Dee Fenner of Platteville; one aunt: Alner Pletzer of Spring Green, WI; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Wayne Fenner and Leonard Fenner.

Greg was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington. He was also a member of the Glory Singers, Darlington Jaycees, and was voted Mayor of the Lafayette Manor. Greg also dedicated his time to helping start the Robert Woods Scholarship Fund. He loved music and singing and was a dedicated Chicago Cubs, Wisconsin Badger, and Green Bay Packer fan. Greg also had a competitive side – always ready for a good game of Trivial Pursuit. He enjoyed reading – especially about history and was well versed in Genealogy. Greg always had the capability of putting a smile on your face, and would always end a visit with his favorite phrase “Class of 71”.

A graveside service will be held Monday, November 30, 2020 at 1:00 P.M. at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Darlington with Rev. Joji Reddy of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and Rev. Glenn Andes Evangelical Free Church in Gratiot co-officiating. The Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington is serving the family.

He enlisted in the Air Force immediately following high school serving 2 tours in Vietnam; the first tour being the Tet Offensive of 1968, and also served with the 1st Infantry Division as an Air Force liaison. He also had a career in Mechanical Engineering. Charles had a passion for airplanes and flying. He was most proud of his extensive collection of diecast historical airplanes, especially WWII Warbirds.

Charles loved his God and his country, and, oh, the love he had for his wife of 24 years, and love for his sons and daughters. He loved making Linda laugh and said so often. He loved the laughter she gave him. His passion was music, most notably the Blues, Jazz fusion, good ol’ Rock ‘n Roll, and live concerts. He loved 60’s hot rods and the freedom that his Harley gave him. He truly loved traveling by road taking in all that Nature offered and conversing with the common man. He enjoyed Military History, American Western History, and National Parks.

In the name of God amen, I Philip Milliron of Fairfield Township, County of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, being weak in body but sound Mind and memory and understanding, praise to God for it, and considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof to the end, I may be the better to leave this world whenever it shall please God to call me home, do therefore make this my last Will and Testament in the manner following.

That is to say first and principally, I commend by Soul into hands of Almighty God, my body I commit to the earth to be buried at the direction of my executors herein named.

I Will that my just debts shall be paid, all that shall be owing at my death, together with my funeral expenses, and all charges touching the proving of or otherwise concerning this my Will, shall in the first place, out of my personal Estate and effects, be fully paid and satisfied.

I will that my Loving wife Barbara, during her natural life shall have the free use of my Mansion house and two small pots, one bake oven, one table and stand, one bed and bedding, bedstead, two cows, two sheep and one half of all the dreperaffairs (draperies) and all the ----- chairs and cloak.

I likewise bequeath to my son Jacob, one large pott, one bake oven, one skillet, one large kettle, one half the dreperaffairs (draperoies) one bed and bedding and bedstead and two cows, two sheep, one windmill, The horses and gear wagon and all the farming utensils belong to Jacob.

I give and bequeath to my daughter Diana Pershion seventy dollars to be paid by my son Jacob one year after my decease.

I give and bequeath to my daughter Susanna VanLier seventy dollars deducting thirty dollars which I have gave her before, to be paid by my son Jacob two years after my decease.

I give and bequeath to my daughter Barbara Mercer, sixty dollars, deducting fifty dollars which I gave her before, to be paid by my son Jacob three years after my decease.

I give and bequeath to my daughter Margaret Hice sixty dollars to be paid by my son Jacob four years after my decease. What said Hice owes me to be deducted out of the sixty dollars.

And whereas I purchased 500 acres of land from the Holland Land Co., in Jefferson County, Pa., at one time, for which I have paid nearly if not all of the purchase money, and for which I have not received the land title, if the title is not yet got before my decease, that they it may be got out in the name of my sons, David, Henry, and William, who then may convey the same to the others, so as each will have a title in his own name.

I give and bequeath one third of the aforesaid 500 acres of land to my son David where he has improved, to him and his heirs forever.

I also give and bequeath unto my son Henry, one third of said land where ha has improved, to him and his heirs forever.

I give and bequeath to my son William the other one third of said land where Peter Reed improved, to him and his heirs forever, by their paying the following payments.

I give and bequeath to my son Abraham, two hundred Dollars to be paid equally by my sons David, Henry and William, with deducting the amount of the obligation which I hold against him in the first plan, in three years after my decease.

I give and bequeath unto my son John two hundred Dollars to be paid equally by my sons David, Henry and William in three years after my decease, after deducting the Amount of obligation I hold against him in the first plan.

Furthermore I will that my library shall be divided equally among my heirs.

Philip was taxed for 50 acres of land during 1783 and acquired 300 acres of Land Warranty on 4 December 1784 in Hempfield Township. (Penn's Archives, Milliron Records). The 1800 Federal Census, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, lists Philip living in Wheatfield Township; the 1810 and 1830 Federal Census Records show Philip living in Fairfield Township, where he died around 1836. At the time of his death, Philip owned some 500 acres of land.

A Founder of Milliron Church:
The original log church first served a congregation that withdrew from Harrold's Church over strife among Lutherans and Reformeds during the time Rev. Weber was establishing churches throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. Records indicate that Tobias Long and Philip Muelheisen, signers together with Rev. Weber, of the original Weber property documents, largely were influential in the founding of the Muelheisen Church, eventually called "Milliron," the English translation of Muelheisen, a German name.

The John William Weber Memorial Site History:
An itinerant, or circuit-riding minister typical of the times, Rev. Weber had been criss-crossing these western Pennsylvania hills founding new churches since 1783. Seeking to perpetuate his church work, Rev. Weber. Together with several members of a recently founded congregation, purchased the property for "two pounds and 10 shillings lawful money of Pennsylvania . . . forever in trust for the use of said German Reformed Presbyterian Congregations for erecting and building a church school-house and other necessary buildings and improvements from time to time to be made thereon," as stated in a deed signed June 23, 1802 and recorded February 15, 1820. This document is filed in Deed Book 14, page 228 in the Recorder of Deeds office, Westmoreland County Court House, in Greensburg, PA.

The purchase was preceded by a grant-of-land warrant issued some years earlier, on February 13, 1786, with a follow-up survey made on September 6, 1786, on recorded in Survey Book 1, page 57, at the Westmoreland County Recorder of Deeds office.

Then, while not recorded officially until 1870, there also exists at the Court House in Greensburg, in Deed Book 66, page 86, an additional instrument, dated March 6, 1813, specifying more clearly the use and purpose for the property purchase. Signed by William Weaver (Weber) and Philip Milleison (Muelheisen), it states further, in part, that "be it further understood that all members of the Reformed Presbyterian Congregation . . . and their heirs, are hereby entitled to an equal privilege (s.c.) on the same as a place of worship School and Burying Ground forever during the ages; as long as Sun and Moon shines, Water runs and Trees grow, none of the members Connected in the said Congregation shall have a privilege to make sale of said land to any person whatsoever, or in anywise put the same to any other use . . ."

According to historical records, a log structure, known originally as the Muelheisen Church, was erected on the site, and the adjacent cemetery established, where the remains of Rev. Weber are interred.

The existing Chapel was known earlier as the Milliron Church, "Milliron" being the English translation of the German name Muelheisen, the same Philip Muelheisen being one of those largely influential in founding the original congregation, together with Tobias Long and Rev. Weber. The church served a small congregation of Reformed churchgoers until dissolution around the year 1869 and then, in 1956,was refurbished by the former Pittsburgh Synod of the Reformed Church (now United Church of Christ) as a memorial to Pastor Weber.

I Will that my just debts shall be paid, all that shall be owing at my death, together with my funeral expenses, and all charges touching the proving of or otherwise concerning this my Will, shall in the first place, out of my personal Estate and effects, be fully paid and satisfied.

I will that my Loving wife Barbara, during her natural life shall have the free use of my Mansion house and two small pots, one bake oven, one table and stand, one bed and bedding, bedstead, two cows, two sheep and one half of all the dreperaffairs (draperies) and all the ----- chairs and cloak.

I likewise bequeath to my son Jacob, one large pott, one bake oven, one skillet, one large kettle, one half the dreperaffairs (draperoies) one bed and bedding and bedstead and two cows, two sheep, one windmill, The horses and gear wagon and all the farming utensils belong to Jacob.

I give and bequeath to my daughter Diana Pershion seventy dollars to be paid by my son Jacob one year after my decease.

I give and bequeath to my daughter Susanna VanLier seventy dollars deducting thirty dollars which I have gave her before, to be paid by my son Jacob two years after my decease.

I give and bequeath to my daughter Barbara Muur, sixty dollars, deducting fifty dollars which I gave her before, to be paid by my son Jacob three years after my decease.

I give and bequeath to my daughter Margaret Hice sixty dollars to be paid by my son Jacob four years after my decease. What said Hice owes me to be deducted out of the sixty dollars.

And whereas I purchased 500 acres of land from the Holland Land Co., in Jefferson County, Pa., at one time, for which I have paid nearly if not all of the purchase money, and for which I have not received the land title, if the title is not yet got before my decease, that they it may be got out in the name of my sons, David, Henry, and William, who then may convey the same to the others, so as each will have a title in his own name.
I give and bequeath one third of the aforesaid 500 acres of land to my son David where he has improved, to him and his heirs forever.

I also give and bequeath unto my son Henry, one third of said land where ha has improved, to him and his heirs forever.

I give and bequeath to my son William the other one third of said land where Peter Reed improved, to him and his heirs forever, by their paying the following payments.

I give and bequeath to my son Abraham, two hundred Dollars to be paid equally by my sons David, Henry and William, with deducting the amount of the obligation which I hold against him in the first plan, in three years after my decease.

I give and bequeath unto my son John two hundred Dollars to be paid equally by my sons David, Henry and William in three years after my decease, after deducting the Amount of obligation I hold against him in the first plan.

Furthermore I will that my library shall be divided equally among my heirs.

I make appoint and ordain my son Jacob to be executor of this my last Will and testament, in witness whereof I have set my hand and seal the 14th day of March 1735.

"Thomas and Mary and their children left England and came to Pennsylvania sometime before 1698. They settled in Chester County, west of Philadelphia, where Thomas was a yeoman (a farmer). In 1699 or 1700 they bought 238 acres near Thornbury and on September 22, 1701, he received a land grant of 500 acres near East Marlborough from William Penn, for which he paid a yearly rent of 5 shillings. The house they lived in at Thornbury, called "Springhouse" because of a running spring that still flows out of the cellar, is still there today, located on Street Road, near Shiloh Road, and is owned (as of 1982) by the Moody family."1

The Churchills have been living in Sioux City this summer, but the body was taken to their home at Ute, where interment occurred.

The former West Spring Green woman, who rememberd the Civil War and who was married for more than three-quarters of a century, had been a resident of South Dakota for 60 years.
The former Emma Rutherford was born in Sauk County 2 years before the village of Spring Green came into being. She saw it develop, from the coming of the first train, to a thriving community. Her marriage to Sam Mercer took place at Arena January 27, 1872, when she was about 17. When he died in 1949 they had been married 77 years. The Mercers had lived in this area and in Iowa and Missouri before homesteading in South Dakota in 1901. They first lived at Willow Lake there, and later moved to Sioux Falls where they spent the rest of their lives. Mrs. Mercer is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Giles of Sioux Falls, with whom she had been living; another daughter, Mrs. Leo Foster of Southgate, Calif; and two sons, Herbert and Ephraim. Two other sons, George and Ambrose, are dead.

That's a few of the things that Mrs. Emma Mercer did and she celebrated her 103rd birthday this summer out in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Mrs. Mercer was born Emma Rutherford on June 27, 1854 in the southwest corner of Sauk county. She remembers the coming of the first railroad train to Lone Rock and as a child waved goodbye to Wisconsin soldiers leaving for the Civil War. She attended a Ringling Brothers circus in 1872 and thinks that this was the first year they were on the road. She likes to test her remarkable memory by telling the story of the red and blue shoes. Her mother bought these for her when she was only 2 1/2. She can verify her age by the fact that her younger sister had not been born yet. The Mercers were among the earliest settlers in the area that was to become Spring Green. Amos Mercer left the northwest with his wife and children and a few household goods in 1847 on account of hard-times in Illinois. They travelled overland with a team and light wagon by way of Peoria and Galena to Mineral Point. Mr. Mercer tried lead mining for three weeks, but failing to make a success of it, left his family at Mineral Point and walked north until he struck the Wisconsin river at Leech's Crossing, a short distance from old Richland City. He crossed the river on a log canoe furnished by Mr. Leech. Coming to the mouth of Bear Creek he spent the night with the McClouds and in the morning bargained for 80 acres which he improved and sold in 1852. It was then that he purchased the farm in the Spring Green area where he and his family lived for 58 years. There were only three ahead of the Mercers when they reached their new farm: Dalby on the D. E. Mead farm; Rodgers where Vet Peck later lived and Evan Jones at High Bank. The post office for this region was at Franklin known more recently as Highland. The village of Spring Green had not yet been born. Sam Mercer married Emma Rutherford at Arena on Jan. 27, 1872. At one time they were proclaimed the oldest married couple in the United States. They had been married 77 years at the time of Mr. Mercer's death in 1949. Mr. Mercer embraced his wife a few days before he died and observed, using his pet name for her: "Well, sweet Marie, if we had been put down on a bare rock we would have made a living." And the "rock" must have seemed mighty bare at times because years ago the Mercers took-off for Iowa and later moved on to Missouri by covered wagon. Here they were stopped and questioned by Frank and Jesse James and the mother of the desperadoes became their nearest neighbor when they settled at Whitman, Mo. They were in Marrville, Mo. the day President Garfield was shot. 1901 found them homesteading up at Willow Lake, South Dakota and, after living elsewhere in the state, they finally took up permanent residence at Sioux Falls. But Mrs. Emma Mercer still considers herself a Sauk County and Wisconsin girl even though she has been away so many years. She is particularly happy when her own relatives from Wisconsin are able to come to her birthday party. Clarence McCarthy and his family from Benton, Wis. were there this year. Mr. McCarthy is a nephew and used to farm in Bear Vally before moving to Benton and obtaining employment in Dubuque.6
