Dick was born on November 2, 1940, in Dubuque, IA, son of William and Edna (Maas) Shaffer.

Dick was united in marriage to Patricia Tracy on June 11, 1960, at St. Mary's Church in Dubuque. They were truly blessed with almost 57 years together, and 5 children. Dick was a very talented auto body technician who would invest his first 10 years with Wilson Brothers before eventually moving to Dan Kruse Pontiac, where he would devote another 34 years to his trade before finally retiring in 2004. Dick was a loyal man, who was not only proud to be a union member over the years, but also made no apologies for always putting his family first. In his free time, one of Dick's favorite pastimes was watching his beloved Cubbies, and their World Series win on his birthday last year was one of the greatest gifts Dick could have ever asked for. Our hearts ache with the loss of our husband, father and grandfather, but we are grateful for all of the memories he leaves behind and the countless lessons in the importance of delivery when it comes to some good old fashion sarcasm in your day.
