Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Constance with military graveside rites by the Crofton American Legion Post 128. Visitation will be on Monday from 5-8:00 p.m. with a Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, at church in Constance, one hour prior to services.

Pallbearers will be Caleb Lammers, Dustin Lammers, Nicholas Lammers, Adam Lammers. Andrew Diediker, and Joshua Lammers.

Melvin Joseph Lammers was born on Mar. 27, 1933 near Hartington, NE to Alfred A. and Pauline (Arens) Lammers. He attended grade school in Pleasant Valley and District 108 staying with his Arens grandparents so he could make his first communion. Melvin would go on to graduate from Holy Trinity High School in 1950. Then he served in the US Military in Information and Artillery Support from 1953 to 1955. He returned to the family farm and married Jeanette Kube at St. Rose Church in Crofton Nebraska on May 13, 1957.

Melvin loved farming for forty years and being an "over the road" trucker for seventeen years. Melvin, Jeanette, and their six children built their first earth home in 1980 on the farm near Hartington. In 1990, Melvin and Jeanette moved to Yankton South Dakota. Six years later, Melvin began his long battle with cancer. He retired in 2004.

Melvin was a lifetime member and volunteer at St. Joseph Constance where he received his sacraments. He was also a volunteer to assist with funerals at St. Benedict's in Yankton, a member of Holy Name Society, and Knights of Columbus.

Melvin is survived by his wife Jeanette of Yankton, SD; 6 children and spouses Duane Lammers of West Point, NE (his three children- Heather and (Scott Nelson) of Omaha, Dustin and Nicholas of Hartington), Paul (Joen) Lammers of Yankton, SD, Mary Demain of San Antonio, TX (her daughter Emma), Ruth Deffenbaugh of Yankton, SD (her children Joshua and Breanne (Joseph Harris-Phillips) of Yankton), Glen and (Shelley) Lammers of Norfolk NE (their son Caleb and daughter Hannah (Andrew Diediker) and great grand-daughter Reagan), Bret and (Kris) Lammers of Hartington (their children; Adam, Ali, Abby, Alexa and Autumn); brothers Dennis (Rita) Lammers of Hartington and Rodney Lammers of Hartington; Sisters Jolene (Bill) Johnson of Madison, SD, Janice (Arlyn) Berg of Edgerton, KS, sister-in-law Charleen Kube of Crofton; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law Mark Deffenbaugh, and nephew Brett Lammers.

Rodney Francis Lammers was born on January 13, 1940 to Alfred Anton and Pauline Teresa (Arens) Lammers in Hartington, NE. He grew up in the Hartington area and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1958. After high school, Rodney farmed with his dad raising livestock and grain.

Rodney was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was also part of the National Farmer’s Organization and was involved with the Center of Rural Affairs.

Rodney is survived by a brother, Dennis & Rita Lammers of Blair, NE; two sisters, Jolene & Bill Johnson of Madison, SD, and Janice & Arlyn Berg of Edgerton, KS, and 15 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Melvin Lammers, and nephew Brett Lammers.

Growing up she lived in Kaylor and graduated from Menno High School in 1940. On Saturday, September 6, 1941, Esther and Paul Klemme were married in Parker, South Dakota. Esther loved baking and cooking for her family. Her grandchildren knew how loved they were when she would make each of them their own breakfasts when they stayed at her house. It was not uncommon for her to leave a warm loaf of bread in their vehicle. Church and family were very important to her. Esther worked hard both on the farm and at various jobs including the Good Samaritan Center in Scotland and Schmidt’s Furniture in Scotland. In 2008, Esther became a resident at the Good Samaritan Society in Scotland. Esther passed away there on Sunday, October 2, 2011 having attained the age of 89 years.

Esther is survived by her husband of 70 years, Paul “Pete” Klemme of Scotland; children Gay Lynn (Ken) Konrad of Kaylor and Paula (George) Bauder of Scotland; grandchildren Chris (Kristi) Konrad of Mitchell, Cheri (Lee) Wittmeier of Tyndall, and Ryan (Kelli) Bauder of Scotland; great-grandchildren Clay and Lacey Wittmeier and Morgan Bauder; sister Francis Metz of St. Charles, Missouri; and sister-in-law Alice Klemme of Scotland.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Gotthilf and Louise Bietz, and one brother, Floyd “Buddy” Bietz.

Arthur Popken died Saturday morning(January 30, 1954) from injuries received in a car truck collision two miles west of Ireton. His wife, Irene Klemme Popken, and son Lawayne, 8 and Edward Van Engen, 62, driver of the truck are still in the Hawarden hospital with severe injuries.

The boy was being taken to the hospital for treatment following polio at the time of the accident which happened at an intersection two miles west of the Ireton cemetery. The Popken car was traveling north and the truck was going east.

Mr. Popken died three hours after the accident. The boy received several broken ribs and fractured his "good" leg. Mrs. Popken was cut and bruised, Mr. Van Engen suffered a broken leg and broken jaw.

Mr. Popken was a well known Craig farmer, president of the St. John's Lutheran church board and director of the Preston township school board. He was born January 18 1916, and was married to Irene Klemme. Survivors besides his wife and son, are a daughter Lennice, 12, two brothers, George and Ernest; three sisters. Mrs. Adeline Janssen, Mrs. Onno Johnson and Mrs, Elmer Rolfs, all of Craig. Funeral services were held February 3 at St John's Lutheran church at Craig.

She lived in Hillsboro, Ore., for 45 years, attending Calvary Lutheran Church before moving to Sagle, Idaho in 2011.

She had a strong Christian faith and attended First Lutheran Church in Sandpoint, Idaho.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Don; two sons Scott, and Terry (Jamie) and two grandchildren, Tyler and Rebecca; a brother Duane Popken and a stepsister Dorothy Goettsch.

She was preceded in death by her father Arthur, stepfather Claus Kruse, and mother Irene Kruse.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint is handling the arrangements.
