1901In 1901 MRS. MARGARET WITHROW, who has won a good name and a standing as a business woman and manager of a farm in the town of Paris, Grant county, was born in Sangamon county, Ill., in October, 1849.

Mrs. WITHROW's parents, John and Lucinda (RISTER) WILSON, were natives of Pennsylvania, and settlers in the part of Illinois mentioned. They came to Wisconsin at a very early day, lived for a time in the town of Harrison, Grant county, and then bought a farm west of Dickeysville, on which they passed the remaining years of their lives. Mrs. WILSON died at this home in 1877, and Mr. WILSON lived to April, 1900, attaining a very great age. Mr. and Mrs. WILSON reared a family of seven children, all of whom are living: Margaret, Mrs. WITHROW, the eldest; David, a retired farmer of the town of Paris; John, who lives in Lyons, Minn; Jacob, a farmer in Minnesota; Tabitha, Mrs. Henry HATFIELD, of Madison, Wis; William who lives in Minnesota; and Henry, who is engaged in farming in that State.

Margaret WILSON obtained her education in the Dickeysville school. In 1870 she married John WITHROW, of Grant county, who was the son of William and Martha WITHROW, old setters in their town. John WITHROW was born in Potosi, Grant county, in June, 1841, served until discharged for disability, in 1864. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. WITHROW lived on a farm near LeMars, Iowa, for about a year, when it was sold, and the present home of the family in the town of Paris was purchased. There Mr. WITHROW died in January, 1890, leaving his wife with seven children living: (1) Julia, born in the town of Paris in 1873, was for a time a student in the Platteville Normal. She married Milton VARNNETTA and they have two children, Lester and Bertha. They live in the town of Cornelia. (2) Frank, born in 1874, is single, and lives at home. (3) Minnie, born in 1876, is the wife of Burt RIDER, of the town of Harrison. (4) Hattie, born in January, 1878, was educated in the home schools, and is living at home. (5) John, born in 1880, is at home, as are (6) George, born in July, 1882, and (7) Walter, who was born in 1884.

Since the death of her husband Mrs. WITHROW has continued on the farm, keeping her family together, and displaying much business ability. The farm has been greatly improved under her management. In 1897 she erected a large bank barn, and in the summer of 1900 a fine modern house, erected on the foundation of the old home, which was consumed by fire May 3, of that year. Mr. WITHROW was a Democrat, and a member of the Congregational Church, as is also his widow. Mrs. WITHROW is a highly respected lady in the community. Her parents were fine people, and socially the entire family are ranked among the best in the town.8

1918In 1918 FRANK KANEY is a native of Wisconsin and has lived steadily on one farm in Franklin Township for the past forty-three years. He has made the land respond to his capable efforts as an agriculturist and from it has been able to provide for his growing family and at the same time perform his share of responsibilities as a public-spirited citizen. Mr. Kaney was born in Whitewater Township of Walworth County, Wisconsin, June 4, 1855. He is a son of James and Annie (McGuire) Kaney. Both his parents were natives of Ireland. His father came from County Leitrim in 1847 and his mother from Kings County, Ireland, about the same time. They married in this country in 1850. James Kaney was a cooper by trade and for some years followed that occupation at Prarie du Chien, Wisconsin. In 1867 he located on a tract of land in Sauk County, p0artly cleared and improved, and had it well developed as a good farm before he passed away. Both parents died in the same year, 1887, the father on April 3d, and the mother on July 28th. Their children were named Alice, Frank, Elizabeth, Anne, Mary, Margaret, James and William, all still living except the oldest and the youngest. Frank Kaney was educated chiefly in Sauk County and he learned farming by practical experience from his father. In November, 1874, he located on his preset place and is now the owner of 120 acres, devoted to general farming and stock raising. He keeps about forty head of cattle and has a dairy herd of sixteen cows. Mr. Kaney has manifested a commendable interest in the welfare of his community, is an active republican, a member of the Catholic Church and has filled several church offices. He married Anna Walsh, daughter of Peter and Catherine (Curran) Walsh, both of whom came from Dublin, Ireland. Mr. and Mrs. Kaney have the following children: James, Catherine, John, Mary, Anna and Leo. These children were all well educated in the local schools and all of them are still unmarried except James, whose wife was Margaret Doyle.11
