Death18 January 2019Eugene J. Lehman died on 18 January 2019 at age 93 Eugene J. “Gene” Lehman, age 93, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully at 7:20 a.m., on Friday, January 18, 2019, at Ennoble Manor. To honor Gene’s life, funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, with Deacon Paul Zimmerman officiating. To celebrate Gene’s life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. Entombment will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, where full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Gene was born on January 23, 1925, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Moral M. and Loretta E. (Haas) Lehman.

Gene was a life long Dubuquer who from graduated high school and went on to honorably serve his country with the U.S. Navy Seabees as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class during WWII, in the Pacific area. He was united in his marriage to the love of his life, Mildred “Millie” Smith, on August 7, 1948, in Dubuque, and the two were blessed with 50 wonderful years together, and 3 adored children, before she was called home ahead of him on July 28, 1998. He was devoted to protecting the public as a police officer with the Dubuque Police Department for 22 years, until his retirement in 1972. Never one to just sit still, after retiring Eugene would switch gears and go on to drive school bus for another 19 years. He was very proud of his years of service to his community and was a long time member of the Iowa State Police Association. In his free time, Gene and Millie loved jumping in the RV and touring the country, visiting parts of all 49 states as well as parts of Canada. After Millie passed away, Gene found a new traveling partner in Betty Dahlguard, and the two would spend many winters in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas around the McAllen and Mission areas. We are saddened at the loss of such a wonderful man, who was an outstanding example of service to others, but are extremely grateful for the 93 years that we were blessed to have him here on this Earth, making the lives of those around him a little bit better.

Those left to cherish Gene’s memory include

his children,
Steven Lehman, Dubuque, IA,
Gregory (Shirley) Lehman, Mountain Home, AR
and Lynn Anderegg, Hustler, WI;

his grandson,
Jeremy (Donna) Lehman, Des Moines, IA;

his great-granddaughters,
Samantha and Rebecca Lehman, both of Des Moines, IA;

and his special friend,
Betty Dahlguard, Des Moines, IA.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; and his loving wife, Mildred Lehman.
