Oscar L. Fredrick Scheewe, 92, who once rode the range with Charles M. Russell, Montana's famed cowboy artist, and who later was a Helena butcher for many years, died this morning at his home, 540 Hillsdale. Mr. Scheewe, who had resided here almost continuously for the past 72 years, had been ill only a few days. He was born in Greenhausen, East Prussia, Feb. 21, 1859. He left home at the age of 18 to come to America. After a short stay in Buffalo, N. Y., he came to Helena, in October, 1879, as a guard for the Wells-Fargo stage which ran between Ogden, Utah, and Helena. The morning after his arrival here he went to work as a cow-puncher for the Stadler and Kaufman outfit. Later he was a butcher and cattle buyer for them. During his days on the range he rode with Russell for three years. He was proprietor of a meat market at the corner of Sixth and Jackson, where the Union Market now stands, from 1904 until 1910. He was married May 15, 1888, to the former Theresa Jacoby, who survives him. They were married by the late Father Paladino in the old Sacred Heart cathedral. Their wedding breakfast was held at their newly constructed home at 540 Hillsdale, where they have resided since their marriage. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1948.
