Art and Erna and their family lived on the farm near Hartington for 27 years, then lived in Oklahoma, Arkansas and California before returning home to Hartington in 1993. Arthur died June 5, 1996, at the age of 84. Erna enjoyed gardening, crocheting, cooking, baking and especially playing cards. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Survivors include seven children and their spouses, JoAnn Herndon, Chico, Calif; Tony and Barbara Arens, Wrightwood, Calif; Elaine and Jim Reed, Modesto, Calif; Merle and Jackie Arens, Oklahoma City, Okla; Dale and Barbara Arens, Simi Valley, Calif; Richard and Carol Arens, Winnetka, Calif; Cheryl and Ron Powell, Upland, Calif; 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers Emery Hochstein, Hartington, and Merlin and wife, Delores Hochstein, Wynot. Emery was born on December 19, 1921 at Bow Valley, Nebraska to Peter and Ida (Kathol) Hochstein. He grew up in the Bow Valley area and attended District 13 School. He served in the U.S. Army from June 24, 1942 to December 18, 1943. Emery married Lorraine V. Sudbeck on December 27, 1944 at Bow Valley. They farmed northwest of Hartington until moving to their home north of Hartington in 1976. Emery loved the farm and continued to be active in farming and buying and selling cattle until his death. He also sold Super Cross Seed corn for about 10 years. He enjoyed talking politics and playing cards. Emery could talk to anyone as he had the gift of gab. He was a lifelong New York Yankee fan and attended 3 Super Bowls to watch his grandson, Russ Hochstein, play. Emery was the last one of the Pete Hochstein family of 13 to die. Emery was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and had a Perpetual Hour of Adoration for many years. His faith and praying the rosary was very important to him. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a former member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the NFO. Emery is survived by 6 children and their spouses; Jim and Sue Hochstein, Ken and Carol Hochstein, Gayle and Barb Hochstein all of Hartington; Carolyn and Jerry Arkfeld of Omaha; Michael “Mick” and Nancy Hochstein of Hartington; Kristi and Steve Chonis of Kansas City, Missouri; 26 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren, 2 sisters-in-law, Wilma Hochstein of Lincoln, Nebraska and Dolores Hochstein of Wynot, Nebraska. Adrian was born on April 6, 1920, at Wynot, NE, to Peter and Ida (Kathol) Hochstein. He grew up in the Bow Valley area and lived in the Bow Valley and Wynot areas all of his life where he farmed. Later on, he also worked construction with his brother, Elmer. He has been a resident of Beverly Healthcare in Hartington since 2000. He loved to tell stories and make people laugh. He was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bow Valley.

Survivors include 1 sister, Erna Arens, Hartington; 2 brothers: Emery Hochstein, Hartington, and Merlin and his wife, Delores Hochstein, Wynot, NE; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters: Dorothy Feilmeier and Blanche Arens; 7 brothers: Long, Mark, Stephen, Paul, Alfred, Elmer and an infant, Hubert.

Merlin Virgil Hochstein was born on January 8, 1927 to Peter and Ida (Kathol) Hochstein in Bow Valley, NE. He grew up in the Bow Valley area and graduated from Cedardale Grade School, District 13. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in 1945. After his discharge from the military in 1946, Merlin returned home to the family farm. On August 8, 1950, Merlin married Dolores Ann Sudbeck in Bow Valley. They farmed in the Bow Valley area until moving to Wynot in 1987. From 1987 to 1999, Merlin worked for Wynot Public School, and then for the Village of Wynot from 2001 to 2005.

He was a member of Holy Family (Sacred Heart) Catholic Church in Wynot, the Hartington VFW Post 5283, and to the Wynot American Legion Post #31.

Merlin is survived by his wife Dolores of Wynot; one son Pete Hochstein; two daughters and one son-in-law, Jill Koch and Mary Lee & husband Mike Villanueva; four grandchildren, Shawn Koch, Casey and his wife Anna Koch, Liam and Maya Villanueva; one brother, Emery Hochstein of Hartington; two sisters-in-law, Sylvia Hochstein of Omaha, NE and Wilma Hochstein of Coleridge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Daniel; 4 sisters, Dorothy Feilmeier, Erna Arens, Blanche Arens, and Hulda Becker; 8 brothers, Longinus, Mark, Stephen, Paul, Alfred, Adrian, Elmer, and an infant brother Hubert Hochstein.

They farmed in the Bow Valley area until moving to Wynot in 1987.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Wynot, Christian Mothers, and a member of the Wynot American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include one son, Pete and two daughters, Jill Koch and Mary Lee (Mike) Villanueva, three grandsons, Shawn Koch, Casey Koch, and Liam Villanueva, three granddaughters, Maya Villanueva, Kelsey Villanueva, and Laura Villanueva, one great-grandson Brennan Koch, two great granddaughters Everly Koch and Raegan Renae Koch and great-granddaughter Olivia Mae due in October . She is also survived by two sisters Mary Jean (Jerry) Uhing, Sharon Schmidt (Jerry), 5 brothers, Don (Gloria) Sudbeck, Clair (Deanna) Sudbeck, Lloyd (Janice) Sudbeck, David (Annette) Sudbeck, Kevin (Jaci) Sudbeck, and two sisters-in-law Jeann Sudbeck and Karen Sudbeck.
