     Richard Allen (February 14, 1760 – March 26, 1831) was a minister, educator, writer, and the founder in 1816 of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME), the first independent black denomination in the United States. He opened his first church in 1794 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was elected the first bishop of the AME Church.
Richard Allen was born on February 14, 1760, in Germantown, Pennsylvania (now a part of Philadelphia.) Allen's biracial mother and African father were both held as slaves by Quaker lawyer and jurist Benjamin Chew, so Allen himself was born into slavery. Reverend, ex-slave. Richard Allen was an African American pastor and the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He was born as a slave to a colonial jurist.
