Life EventDateDescription
Birth28 November 1824Bernard Joseph Reuter was born on 28 November 1824 at Prussia.
He was the son of (?) Reuter and Catherine (?).
Marriage9 April 1853Bernard Joseph Reuter married Catherine Bayer on 9 April 1853 at Grant, Wisconsin.1
Death10 April 1900Bernard Joseph Reuter died on 10 April 1900 at age 75 Bernard Reuter, one of the oldest and best known citizens of the German Settlement was called to his final rest at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, P.J. and Kate Stelpflug on the 10th. He was born in Germany, November 28th 1824 and had reached 75 years, 4 months and 4 days, when he reached life's goal and was gathered to his fathers. The cause of death being Bright's disease from which he had been suffering uncomplainingly for the past year. Mr. Reuter was a house painter by trade and a skilled workman, and in the relations of life an exceptionally good man. "None named him but to praise, None knew him but to love." His funeral took place on Thursday the 12th inst, from St. Andrews church in the German Settlement in which he had long been a devoted member, Father Pape officiating and celebrating requiem mass of the dead. There was an unusually large assembly made up from all parts of the surrounding country--sons and daughters and grand-children who wept the demise of their excellent father who had been good and kind to them during all their lives--distant relatives and friends who came from far and near to pay their tribute of respect to one whom they had long esteemed for his many kindly acts, generous impulses and friendly relations in all the walks of life. He has spent over fifty years of his industrious, useful and valuable life among them and nothing but good words have been spoken of him. The breath of detraction or miasma of slander never blighted his door or took an iota from his good name. He has lived in our midst like the veteran oak of the woods around which his companions have nearly all fallen--steadily advancing to maturity till its branches covered the green sward where he grew--children playing beneath the grateful shade and the birds of spring building their nests and "singing in its green boughs." But the steady oak that all adorned and gazed upon with pride
and pleasure, at last has fallen--fallen to rise no more-and we can only treasure up in memory its symmetry, its comeliness, its shining virtues and bright green foliage now withered and strewn in the winds and rains and heaven, hastening to decay. Mr. Reuter left nine surviving sons and daughter--Annie, wife of Anthony Rupp who lives in Cherokee, Iowa; Joseph and Benjamin Reuter and Langkamp who live in the town of Harrison; Kate Stelpflug, wife of P.J. Stelpflug, town supervisor of Potosi; Maggie Pluemer, wife of John Pluemer and Burt and Jacob Reuter of Potosi, Mary Vannatta of Harrison, daughter of John Wiedman and Mary his wife, both deceased, is a grand-daughter of the deceased. Henry, his son died a year ago last march in the Settlement. He was a young man much respected. His good mother, Mrs. Bernard Reuter died several years ago and was buried in the Catholic cemetery in the Settlement where the affectionate husband and worthy father is now at rest by her side and-- "Where in many a moldering heap, The rude forefathers of the hamlet sleep." Peace to their unbroken slumbers and repose to their emancipated souls.
