He enjoyed bowling, carpentry work, and volunteered at the Arboretum after retiring.

    Survivors include his children; Ron (Laurie) Helbing of Asbury and Cheryl (Teddy) Simon of Bernard; eight (8) grandchildren, Megan, Josh, Jarred, Ryan, Jeff, Alex, Kayla, and Austin; eleven (11) great-grandchildren; siblings, Joan (Merlin) Patzner, and Eileen (Dave) Lange; in-laws, Kate Bradley, Hazel (Erwin) Schulpletz, Robert (Carol) Beresford, Keith (Jane) Beresford, and Bunny Helbing.

    Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; a son, Randy; parents; siblings, Joseph, Edward, Merlin “Merks”, William, Margaret, Louise, Liz, and Evelyn.

    He was a member of St. Rose Parish. Joe loved to be with his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed going on trips and visiting with people.

    Surviving are three daughters, Mary Jean (Gary) Nicks, of Dubuque, Judith (Eldon) Wiederholt, of Cuba City, and Doris (Mike) Lange, of Hazel Green; three sons, Harold (Sandy) Helbing and Kenneth (Elaine) Helbing , both of Dubuque, and John (Nancy) Helbing , of Cuba City; a son-in-law, Marvin Ludwig, of Cuba City; 30 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Evelyn (Richard) Nilles and Elizabeth Dalsing, both of Dubuque, JoAnne (Merlin) Patzner, of Potosi, and Elaine (Dave) Lange, of Mount Prospect, Ill; four brothers, Ed (Leora) Helbing and Bill (Susie) Helbing , both of Cuba City, Leonard (Bev) Helbing , of Dubuque, and Merlin (Bunny) Helbing , of Cuba City.

    Ed was a former parish council member and was very helpful in maintaining St. Rose's plumbing and heating needs. After retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, playing cards and spending time with his family.

    Surviving are his wife, Leora, of Cuba City; three daughters, Jean (Bob) Runde, of Hazel Green, Janice (Mike) Cammack, of Apple Canyon Lake, Ill., and Diane (Steve) Runde, of Cuba City; three sons, Jim (Carol) Helbing , of Hazel Green, and Roger (Sandy) Helbing and Gary (Cathy) Helbing , both of Cuba City; four sisters, Evelyn (Richard) Nilles and Elizabeth Dalsing, both of Dubuque, Joan (Merlin) Patzner, of Potosi, and Elaine (Dave) Lange, of Mount Prospect, Ill; three brothers, Bill (Susie) Helbing and Merlin (Bunnie) Helbing , both of Cuba City, and Leonard (Bev) Helbing , of Dubuque; and 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by a son, Mark; a great-granddaughter, Kelli Runde; his parents; a brother, Joe Helbing ; and two sisters, Louise Droessler and Margaret Schardt.

  • Larry Richard Nilles died on 23 January 2005 at age 60 Larry Richard Nilles, formerly of Lodi, passed away at home in Las Cruces, N.M., after a long and courageous fight with lung cancer, on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at age 60. Larry was born on July 16, 1944, in Cuba City, Wis., the eldest son of Richard and Evelyn (Helbing) Nilles. Larry was raised in Dubuque, where he attended Sacred Heart Grade School and Wahlert High School. In 1968, he married Yvonne Statham; they were blessed with sons, Bruce and Eric. In 1982, he married Beverly Zoodsma; they were blessed with a son, Justin. From 1962 to 1982, he served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force, mostly tours overseas, and retired as a master sergeant. Larry returned to college, earning a B.A. degree in psychology at UW-Madison. He subsequently worked a variety of jobs in Wisconsin, including being a lumberjack for K & M Tie and Lumber and a bartender at Fisherman's Cove, both in Okee, and as a manager for Kaltenberg Seed Farm in Waunakee. After suffering a massive stroke in 1996, he retired and began volunteering at Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital. In 2002, he left behind the cold Wisconsin winters and moved to Las Cruces, where he volunteered at the Casa De Peregrinos Food Pantry and Booker T. Washington Elementary School. Survivors include his sons, Bruce Nilles (fiancee, Bonnie Cosgrove) of Madison, and Eric Nilles of Iowa City, Iowa, and their mother, Yvonne; son, Justin Nilles, also of Madison, and his mother, Beverly; his father, Richard Nilles of Dubuque, Iowa; brother, Keith (Laura) Nilles of Lawrence, Kan; and sisters, Joyce (Dick) Smith of Dyersville, Iowa, and Ann (John) Powers of Dubuque, Iowa. Other survivors include his goddaughter, Amy Powers, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn; and a brother, Tom. Services will be held at noon on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH in Dubuque, Iowa. The burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa, with military rites by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. A private family visitation will be held on Saturday at Hoffmann Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., Dubuque, Iowa.

    Wilbert was born on October 11, 1924 in Dickeyville, Wisconsin, the son of Elmer and Anna (Roth) Helbing. He was united in marriage to Lucille Loch on July 22, 1950 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dubuque. Bert worked at John Deere, Dubuque, for eight years before farming fulltime in Smelser Township for twenty years. After farming he worked for Al Droessler Construction for a few years and then for many years he was a patrolman in Platteville Township. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing and hunting. Bert especially enjoyed family gatherings. He is survived by his wife, Lucille; four children, Diane (Stephen) Kolar; Dennis (Deb) Helbing; Kenneth (Sharon) Helbing; Steve (Liana) Helbing; ten grandchildren, Andrew (Shanna) Kolar, Jason and Scott Kolar, Chad Helbing, Jenna (John) Rankin, Krista Helbing, Haven Helbing, Kelsey, Karley, and Kortney Toso; three great-grandchildren, Colton and Mya Kolar and Sadie Rankin; three sisters, Hazel (Buzz) Knebel, Katie Tigges, and Lorraine Leute; and many nieces and nephews.     He married Adele Schiffman on July 27, 1955, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Tennyson. They formerly owned and operated the Greenhouse Tavern, Kieler, and Helbing 's Supper Club, Louisburg. Mrs. Helbing died April 6, 1998.

    He also drove a milk truck and worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co.

    He was an Army veteran with the rank of P.F.C. He was a member of the Tavern League Association and the American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking and collecting antiques of various items. He was an avid card player and enjoyed special occasions with his friends and family.

    He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

    Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Bernice (Leo) Pitzen, of Dickeyville, Mrs. Kate (Eugene "Doc") Tigges, of Dubuque, Hazel Knaeble (and friend, Buzz), of East Dubuque Ill., and Mrs. Lorraine (Richard "Dick") Leute, of East Dubuque; a brother, Bert (Lucille) Helbing , of Platteville; many nieces and nephews; and a special adopted son, Richie Turner, of Kieler.

    He also was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Adam, Walter and Howard Helbing ; and three sisters, Malinda Helbing , Mildred Pitzen and Marie Klass.

She adored her get-a-ways with her "Platteville Girls". Tammy liked to entertain and loved to bake desserts and cakes, but her favorite thing was caring for and raising her family. Tammy is survived by her husband, Andrew; three daughters, Kelsey (12), Karley (9), and Kortney (4); her parents, Wilbert and Lucille Helbing of Platteville; a sister, Diane (Steve) Kolar of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three brothers, Dennis (Deb) Helbing of Platteville; Kenneth (Sharon) Helbing of Oconomowoc and Steven Helbing of Platteville; and many nieces and nephews. Tammy was preceded in death by an infant brother and sister, Donald and Darlene; grandparents, Elmer and Anna Helbing and John and Cecelia Loch. A service celebrating the life of Tammy will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at 4 p.m. at COVENANT LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1525 N. Van Buren St, Stoughton, with the Rev. Mark Petersen officiating. There will be a time of sharing and remembrance on Monday, March 30, 2009, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the OLSON-HOLZHUTER-CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 206 W. Prospect, Ave. and again on Tuesday at the church from 3 p.m. until the service. Following the service there will be a reception in fellowship hall at the church. A memorial fund will be established in Tammy's memory. A special thanks to the staff at UW Hospital and Clinics and to Hospice Care of Janesville.

    The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A/M, Monday, April 28, 2014, at St. Mary's Church, East Dubuque, with Fr. Francis Steffen officiating. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by members of American Legion Post #787.

    Friends may call from 2 P/M to 7 P/M, Sunday, April 27, 2014, at the Miller Funeral Home, in East Dubuque, where the parish rosary will be recited at 1:45 P/M. Members of American Legion Post #787 will meet at the funeral home at 4 P/M, Sunday, and members of the East Dubuque Volunteer Fire Department will meet at the funeral home at 4:30 P/M, Sunday.

    Ambie was born on December 16, 1923, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Valentine and Freda (Helbing) Roth. He married his one true love, Margie J. Sarazin, on July 25, 1945, in Dubuque.

    He was a veteran of the Army serving during World War II. Ambie served with Cannon Company 347th Infantry regiment. He crossed the English Channel on D-Day fighting thru France, Holland, & Germany. He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Other battles and campaigns included the Rhineland and Ardennes, Central Europe. Ambie received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct medal, European theater campaign ribbon, Victory medal, Combat Infantry badge, European African Middle Eastern campaign ribbon, and numerous other medals. He ended his service on December 14, 1945.

    Ambie served as Mayor of East Dubuque. He was formerly employed at John Deere Dubuque Works until his retirement in 1982. He enjoyed farming, moving from East Dubuque, in 1966, to his farm. Ambie was an avid Euchre player. As of late, he enjoyed riding his scooter around the farm, especially back to the quarry to talk to his buddies.

    He was a member of the East Dubuque Drun & Bugle Corps, UAW Local #94, VFW Post #7976 and American Legion Post #787, both of East Dubuque, Galena Elks Lodge #882, and the Galena Eagles Club. He was a former member of the East Dubuque Volunteer Fire Department. Ambie will be remembered for the "great" man he was and for all the things he did for the people he loved and his community.

    Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Margie J. Roth; a daughter, Diane Korish (special friend, Carl Langkamp), of Benton,WI; two (2) sons, Duane V. Roth, of Ash Flats, AR, and David R. (Pam) Roth, of East Dubuque, IL; six (6) Grandchildren; twenty-six (26) Great-Grandchildren; three (3) Great-Great-Grandchildren; his siblings, Darlene Gibson, Helen (Ron) Metcalf; and a sister-in-law, Lois Roth, all of East Dubuque, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Valentine & Freda Roth; a son, Daniel A. Roth; a granddaughter, Tammy L. Roth; a great-granddaughter, Chelsie Jo Roth; his siblings, John Speaker, Carrie Johnston, Wayne, Edward, Louis & Donald Roth; and brother-in-law, Gordon Gibson.
