Janet was born Sept. 5, 1944, to Joseph J. and Helen A. (Ehrlich) Blasen. She was raised and educated in Dubuque, Iowa, attended St. Columbkille School and graduated from Walhert High School. There she met Douglas Helbing and they were married on August 8, 1964.

Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She enjoyed spending time with them, teaching them to cook her famous meatballs and other dishes, and teaching the girls how to sew. With a love for detail, Janet was a master organizer and very artistic. She would spend hours painting wooden ornaments made by Doug for their small business, Wish You Wood.

Her spirituality was evident in her involvement with the Catholic Church. She was very supportive of Doug’s service to the Church as a deacon. She organized two pilgrimages to Fatima and Lourdes and a Eucharistic pilgrimage to EWTN and various shrines and churches in the Midwest. She also served as Director of Religious Education at Christ the King Church. She was instrumental in beginning the Family Formation, Vacation Bible School, Sacred Heart Enthronement, Children’s Eucharistic Adoration, and Family Holy hour programs. Janet organized the two parish missions that took place in November 2007 with Father Bill Gaffaney and this past October with Father Bill Casey. Prior to becoming a member at Christ the King Church, she helped to establish the Eucharistic Adoration program at St. Joseph Church in Mandan. Janet was also actively involved with the World Apostolate of Fatima for the Bismarck Diocese, serving nine years as its president. She continued to serve as an advisor, especially in the World Wide Children’s Holy Hour program.
