History of Cedar County, Nebraska (1937) - John Lammers, who was destined to become one of the outstanding figures in the history of Northeast Nebraska, was born in the city of Hanover, Germany on July 5, 1839 and, at the age of 18 years he came to America and took up his residence in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he learned the cooper's trade. Later he moved to Navine, Iowa and afterwards to Dubuque. He married and, in the spring of 1861, he and his family joined a number of neighbors, westward bound and eventually settled near St Helena, in one of the most fertile and picturesque spots in the whole territory. The part of homeseekers included also the families of Bernard Suing, Gerhard Kohls, Bernard Wubben, Stephen Klug, John Wieseler, Franz Wiseler (sic) and Gerhard Arends. These families came as most of the early settlers came, with all their worldly goods loaded in covered wagons drawn by oxen and reached here only after a long and wearisome journey across dangerous streams and over wild and unbroken prairie. But they all came with one purpose in view - to make a home for themselves and their children - and this was the purpose that animated John Lammers when he came into this land of opportunity. The late Mr Lammers was a man of remarkable good judgment and he knew the value of land. His first act upon coming to Cedar County was to take up a homestead, buy a preemption and plant a timber claim and he built a good home for his family where they lived as well as their means would allow. In personal appearance, Mr Lammers was a handsome and striking figure, standing over six feet in height, with a splendid physique, powerful intellect and excellent judgment and he soon became a power in the community in which he lived. As above stated, Mr Lammers was married in Dubuque, Iowa and to this union were born four children. They were: Mrs Mary Thoene, Henry, John W., and Mrs Josephine Schaeffer. The first Mrs Lammers died leaving her young husband with four small children, and after a time, he remarried, his second wife being Mrs Mary Stratman, daughter of a pioneer family of St Helena. To this union, were born 16 children as follows: Mrs Peter Becker, (Elizabeth) Frank, Joe, Anton K., Mrs Barney Becker, (Martha), Mrs Peter Kaiser (Ida), Mrs Frank Heine, (Frances), Mrs Carl Bruening, (Matilda), Ignatz, A. J. and Alphonse. After settling in this county in company with a number of other intrepid pioneers, he worked industriously for many years in the face of great difficulties and finally succeeded in accumulating a large property. He died June 1897 and sleeps today in the old historic graveyard at St Helena where his two wives are also buried. When Mr Lammers passed away at the end of a long and useful life, he owned 3,000 or 4,000 acres of Cedar County land and left behind him a record of achievement which has seldom been equalled. He was the father of 20 children, 16 of whom were living at the time of his death, and all of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who have lived to grow up have filled important places in their respective communities. As previously indicated, the late John Lammers was a man of towering intellect, keen business judgment and great executive ability and the influence which he had in the development of Cedar County can never be estimated. It was said of him that he had the ability to be secretary of the United States treasury and, while his activities were directed along different lines, he was a commanding and influential personality. He not only accumulated a vast amount of property during his life time, but he was also a progressive and public spirited citizen and he filled many positions of trust with great ability. In addition to being a farmer, he also engaged extensively in the livestock industry and is credited with being the first man to ship fattened cattle out of Cedar County. He was the first owner and proprietor of what is still known as the Lammers Ranch. This being the largest ranch of its kind in northeast Nebraska, and he was known as the "Cattle King of Cedar County". He brought the first self binder into this county and also the first threshing machine and in all of his farming operations he used the most approved and up-to-date methods. Nor was this the extent of his activities. He not only engaged in farming and livestock on a large scale but carried on a mercantile business at St Helena at one time and later established and operated the lumber yard in Hartington. He also owned a lumber yard at Bloomfield. As a result of Mr Lammers success along these various lines, his genius was recognized, and, in later years, he was honored with public office and other positions of trust. He took an active part in the organization of Cedar County and served for a long number of years as a member of the county board. He held the office of president of the First National Bank of Hartington, for a number of years and held many other responsible positions. Mr Lammers' public service was important and conspicuous as the following incident will illustrate. In the early days, there was a plan to extend the railroad from Sioux City to the western boundary of Cedar County and the people of the county had voted the necessary bonds to build it. Mr Lammers was opposed to the project on the grounds that it was laying too great a burden on the taxpayers and he fought the issue to a finish. He declared that he would not live in a mortgaged county and he went into the courts at his own expense and had the bond issue declared null and void because it exceeded the amount of valuation allowed by law. The bonds were burned in the street of St Helena and thus the people of Cedar County were saved thousands of dollars of indebtedness. When John Lammers first came to the United States, he was unable to speak a word of English, but he acquired the language rapidly and, while his own opportunities had been limited, he was always interested in education. The Lammers school, was considered one of the best schools in Cedar County and all of Mr Lammers' descendants have been given the best of advantages. All of the children have received at least a common school and commercial education and, among the third generation, there are a number of college graduates who have distinguished themselves in the professions.
No family, either foreign born or native, has left a deeper impress in the financial and business institutions of Cedar county than that of the Lammers, John Lammers, father of A. K. Lammers of Hartington, first came to Nebraska in the spring of 1861, and from the beginning gave evidence of unusual financial and business acumen. He was frugal, industrious and honest, a triology of virtues that made him the most successful man the county has ever known.
John Lammers was a native of the kingdom of Hanover, born July 5, 1839, and came to America in early life. He came up the rivers to Cincinnati, later resided in Dubuque and Davenport, where he had been living some years when he migrated to the plains of Nebraska. Ten families formed a colony and drove through Iowa with ox teams; crossing the river at Sioux City they diverged to West Point, but made no settlement until reaching St. Helena. Mr. Lammers filed on a homestead in the Bow, near St. Helena, Nebraska, and later a timber claim; these tracts were the nucleus of an estate that amounted to upwards of three thousand acres before he was stricken down in 1896. He was interested in business enterprises of various sorts, and his financial ability made them a success. He was married to Miss Mary Stratman, a native of Westphalia, and to them were born eleven children.

1912In 1912 ANTON K. LAMMERS.
Anton K. Lammers was born in Cedar county, Nebraska, June 23, 1871, and attended the country schools during the short winter terms. He attended the Hartington schools one year, and the following year, the winter of 1886-7, took a course in the schools of Quincy, Illinois; the winter of 1889-9 he attended a commercial college in Omaha, fitting himself for a postion in the business world. His father had taken an interest in a lumber yard in Hartington and Mr. Lammers became one of the office force. In 1895 the firm was dissolved and the business continued under the firm name of J. Lammers & Son; after the death of the father Mr. Lammers purchased the mother's interest in the estate, and has since conducted the business under his sole management. He carries a full line of lumber, together with paints, oils, brushes, etc., and other timber accessories. His genial nature and square dealing win for him a good share of the trade of Hartington and the surrounding country.
Mr. Lammers was married in Hartington, May 22, 1900, to Miss Clara Walz, a native of Iowa. Her parents, Anton and Dorothea (Kruse) Walz, are natives of Germany. They came to America and settled in Iowa for a number of years, then came on west to Nebraska. To Mr. and Mrs. Lammers three children were born, namely: Eurelia, Gertrude, and Dorothy. Mr. Lammers has a vivid recollection of some of the blizzards of the early years; in that of October 14 to 16, 1880, he had ridden his pony over to a married sister's, and the storm breaking, he was compelled to remain there three days; had there been telephones in those dayss, he could easily have relieved the anxiety of his parents; as it was they had to rest contented with the thought that he was safely housed. In that short, sharp storm of Janary 12, 1888, in which so many lives were lost, Mr. Lammers happended to be in town and kept within doors until the storm abated.
He saw the flood of the spring of 1881, when at its highest so many homes were swept away; and remembers when big game was still to be found on Antelope creek; wild turkey frequently formed the main part of prairie banquets in those days, and nothing in later days can surpass the dinners served when Cedar county was on the frontier. For two seasons his father's crops were devastated by grasshoppers, and young as he was Mr. Lammers well remembers their flights.
Mr. Lammers has inherited a good name from a worthy sire, and well is he upholding it. He is recognized as one of the substantial and progressive business men of the county, and with his family holds a prominent place in the social life of his home town.
Mr. Lammers has been a life-long democrat, is a member of the Catholic church, and of the Knights of Columbus.

She was the daughter of John Lammers and Mary Stratman.
Marriage14 May 1889Elizabeth Lammers married Peter Becker on 14 May 1889 at Cedar, Nebraska, license obtained May 1, 1889.
Death12 April 1906Elizabeth Lammers died on 12 April 1906 at age 41 The community was shocked last Friday morning by the news of the death of Mrs. Peter Becker living seven miles west of Hartington. Mrs. Becker had been in her usual good health until last Wednesday when she was taken ill. Medical aid was summoned, but on Thursday she became worse. All that medical assistance and loving hands could do were administered in her behalf, but to no avail, and Thursday evening her spirit passed to the better land.

Lizzie Lammers was born at St. Helena, Nebr., Nov. 3d, 1864, near which place she grew to womanhood, beloved by all who knew her. She was united in marriage to Peter Becker May 14th, 1889. Eight children were born of this union all of whom survive her. As a child she became a member of Holy Trinity church this city, and was a devout Christian, steadfast and faithful in her belief, always a willing and active worker for the advancement of her church. In her home she was a kind and loving mother, a faithful and devoted wife and words can but poorly express the sorrow occasioned by her sudden death. Besides her husband and children, she leaves an aged mother, Mrs. Mary Lammers, nine brothers and six sisters, all residing in Cedar county, to mourn her early death.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Fr. Glauber at 10 o'clock Saturday morning from Holy Trinity church, interment being in the Catholic cemetery. The large number of friends present to pay their last respects to her memory show in a small measure the esteem in which she was held. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved relatives in their sad affliction.

She was the daughter of John Lammers and Mary Stratman.
Marriage14 June 1895Martha Lammers married Bernard Becker on 14 June 1895 at Cedar, Nebraska.
Death10 February 1913Martha Lammers died on 10 February 1913 at age 38 MRS. BERNARD BECKER died, at her home near St. Helena, Monday night, February 10, 1913, Mrs. Martha Becker, wife of Bernard Becker, aged 39 years. The immediate cause of death was paralysis of the bowels, following child-birth. A still born baby boy came a few days previous, and although the best medical skill and nurse care that it was possible to secure was provided, nothing could stay the hand of the grim reaper. Martha Lammers was born and reared in Cedar county, her parents being among the pioneer settlers here. She was married to Bernard Becker in 1895, and nine children, six boys and three girls, remain as a result of this union to mourn the loss of a fond and loving mother. Besides the husband, she is survived by eight brothers, Henry, Will, Frank, Joseph H., Anton K., Ignatz L., August J., and Alphonse J. Lammers, and her sisters, Mrs. P. J. Schaefer, Mrs. Mary Thoene, Mrs. Frank Heine, Mrs. Carl Bruening, all of this county, and Mrs. P. J. Kaiser of Milwaukee. The death of Mrs. Becker is a peculiarly sad one, following that of her brother, John W. Lammers, which occurred only a few days ago. She was a woman of fine character and much beloved by her family and a large circle of friends. The husband and children have the sincere sympathy of all in their sad loss and bereavement. The funeral service was conducted from the St. Helena Catholic church this morning at 10 o'clock by Father Miller, the remains being deposited in the Chapel cemetery.
