Marriage29 June 1997Ralph Weston Tracy married Rose Leone Hanusa, daughter of Edward Henry Hanusa and Clara Pauline Terasa, on 29 June 1997.
Death5 April 2013Ralph Weston Tracy died on 5 April 2013 at age 95 On Friday evening, April 5, 2013, we lost another member of the "Greatest Generation." His name was Ralph Tracy. Ralph was born in an upstairs bedroom in a house on Third Street in Wonewoc, Wisconsin in 1917. He was the middle child of ten born to Thomas V. Tracy, of Hillsboro and Irene S. Randolph, of Elroy, Wisconsin. Ralph attended grade school near Camp Douglas at Tug Hollow School. The family returned to Wonewoc in 1931 where Ralph completed high school. He attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison until 1939, when broke and hungry, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. Ralph reported after his last class to Chanute Field Illinois in May of 1939 to become an Air Corp Flight Crew member and Radio Operator. His service to our country spanned the best part of seven years. He was assigned to flight crew duties with the 6th Air Force, 44th Bombardment Group, Medium. Ralph served at Albrook Field, Panama and Atkinson Field, British Guiana where he completed twenty-seven combat missions against the German U-boat Fleet in the central Atlantic and eighty-two Reconnaissance missions of the Caribbean and Atlantic coast of South America. Ralph mustered out of service in September of 1945 as a Master Sargent and received an American Defense Service Metal and a Bronze Star. He restarted his life married to Josie Ann Birdsill, daughter of Mary Benish and George Birdsill, of Hillsboro, WI. Together they headed to Northwestern University where Ralph completed a degree in Electrical Engineering with academic honors. Ralph worked for the Chicago Transit System for thirty years. He started as a Motorman and ended his career as Chief of Operations with supervision of 1200 employees. Jo and Ralph danced together for 54 years, but the best times were always at home in Wisconsin and at "The Cottage" on Jordan Lake. Jo passed away suddenly in 1994 turning Ralph's world upside down. God had a second life planned. In 1996, feeling very low, Ralph, now eighty years old, met Rose Grosklaus of Reedsburg. Rose's love restored Ralph's love of life. They were married at St. John Lutheran Church in July of 1997. They danced and traveled together until medical challenges separated them physically, but their love for one another never wavered. The Grosklaus family has enriched the Tracy's. Thank you Rose, you're a dear heart. Ralph is already missed by his wife, Rose; his sisters: Fern Artz and Florence Hugh; his son: Randolph, and his wife, Joan; his grandchildren: Elisabeth Moore and Charles Tracy; his great-grandchildren: Luke Weston and Grace Marie Tracy; Rose's children: Dolores (Larry) Lichte, Don Grosklaus and Diane (Mike) Whitty; other extended family and a host of friends. A celebration of Ralph's life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in Reedsburg with Pastor Dominic Guido officiating. Interment with military rites will follow at Pine Eden Cemetery in Wonewoc. This was a life well lived and not bad for a dirt-floor Irish farm kid from Wonewoc. Thanks Dad. Ok, Dad you're off on a "Wing and a Prayer." See you soon. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.

Among the pioneers was Waterman Hoadley and his wife. Another old settler by name Ellison and Hoadley built a mill, in the valley to the east. It still stands and is known as Hoadley's mille. Hoadley went to California during the gold rush but returned and lived out his days peacefully in the valley which in its primitive construction must have been intensely beautiful. Much of the timber has been cut away. The stream that meanders through the valley is yet a pretentious water course.

WILLIAM S. HOLMES, a retired farmer residing in Platteville, Grant county, and a valiant ex-soldier of the United States volunteer army, was born in Sugar Grove, Penn; March 23, 1839, a son of P. A. and Rosanna (BULSOM) HOLMES, the former a native of the State of New York, and the latter of the Keystone State.

P. A. HOLMES brought his wife and child to Grant county, Wis., in 1840, and settled on a farm near Platteville, where he died in 1874, leaving his widow with ten children. The widow is a present living in Georgetown, Grant county, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary E. GRAHAM. Of the family of ten children, William S., is the eldest; James W., born in Grant county, Wis., was a soldier for two years in Company F, 3d Wis. V.I., in the Civil war, was wounded at Cedar Mountain, was honorably discharged and settled in Missouri, where he died, leaving no family; Martha M. is the deceased wife of John HENDERSON, of Missouri; Emmett was a soldier in the 20th Wis. V.I., was wounded at Prairie Grove, and there died; Mary E., is the wife of James L., GRAHAM, of Georgetown; Joseph W. is married and lives in Wilsonville, Neb., but has no children; John C. is a farmer at Sanborn, Iowa, and has a family of eleven children; Abigail E., deceased wife of Robert QUINGLEY, left no family; Robert is a resident of Dubuque, Iowa; Susan, widow of Marshall COOPER, also resides in Dubuque with her children.

As he was the eldest of the family, William S. HOLMES received but a limited education when young, and worked on the farm until he enlisted in 1861, in Company F, 3d Wis. V.I., which he took part in numerous battles, including Maryland Heights, Antietam, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville and Beverly Ford, and was with Gen. Pope in his retreat across the Potomac; was also at Winchester, served under Gen. Hooker, and likewise was with Gen. Sherman on his celebrated march through Georgia. His military career ended at Averysboro, N.C., where he was shot through the leg by a minie ball, from the effects of which wound he was confined in hospital for four months on David's Island, New York Harbor, and there received an honorable discharge, and returned to Grant county.

In July 1873, Mr. HOLMES married Miss Selena J. PIDDINGTON for his first wife. He then purchased the old home place on which he lived until 1896, when he retired to Platteville and erected for himself an elegant dwelling. In May, 1897, Mrs. Selena HOLMES passed away, leaving him with one daughter Elizabeth, now the wife of Charles ROUSE, of Grant county, and the mother of one child, Ethel. In March, 1898, Mr. HOLMES chose for his second wife, Mrs. Elizabeth HOADLEY, a sister of his first wife. Mrs. Elizabeth HOLMES was born near Manchester, England, in 1843, and is a daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth PIDDINGTON, who came to America in 1849, and settled on a farm in Grant county, on which they passed the remainder of their lives. At their death they left two daughters - Mrs. HOLMES and Mrs. Sarah HINDMAN, of Harrison, Grant county. By her first husband Mrs. HOLMES became the mother of two children, namely: George W. HOADLEY, who resides near the Block House, in Grant county, and is the father of two children, Guy W., and Cynthia E; and Gertrude HOADLEY, at the age of sixteen years, was graduated from the State Normal school, at Platteville, and is now a popular teacher in the public schools of the county. In politics Mr. HOLMES is a Republican, but has never been an officer seeker nor an office holder. He and wife have made many friends since they came to reside in Platteville, and their life would be one of unalloyed enjoyment, but for the fact that Mr. HOLMES at times suffers greatly from the serious wound he received in his gallant defense of his nation's flag.
