  • Alfred Bernard McClain died on 6 January 2005 at Dubuque, Iowa, at age 68 Alfred B. McClain , 68, of 1860 Garfield Ave., died at 12:10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, following a courageous 10-year battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Friends may call from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 1 p.m.

Mr. McClain was employed at John Deere Dubuque Works for 30 years, retiring in 1994.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1936, in Tennyson, Wis., son of Albert and Evelyn (Schaulk) McClain. He married Shirley J. Gustafson on June 18, 1955, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dubuque.

Family was everything to Al. He was a caring husband and a kind and gentle father and grandfather to more than just his own. He had a genuine soft spot for all children and over the years was like a father or grandfather to many. He was a devoted son and brother. He especially cherished his brother, Robert, who was his dearest friend.
