    Interment will take place in Waterman Cemetery in Sutherland. Military services will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 152 of Sutherland.

    Following the graveside service, there will be lunch served at the Legion Hall in Sutherland.

    Mr. Engelke passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Sioux City.

    John J. Engelke, the son of William D. and Emma Meyer Engelke, was born May 11, 1921, in Sutherland. His childhood years were spent in the Calumet area, where he received his education, graduating from Calumet High School. Following his schooling, he entered into the military and served with the U.S. Navy as a Flight Engineer 2nd Class from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946.

    John married Marjory Ginger on July 10, 1948, in Sutherland. Following their marriage, they lived in Sutherland, where they farmed for many years. John also owned and operated his own sand and gravel business in his later years. John was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau and American Legion Post No. 152 of Sutherland.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Donald Engelke; and a grandchild.

    John is survived by his wife, Marjory of Sutherland; his children: Brian "Butch" Engelke and his wife, Betty, Bonnie Rohrs and her husband, David and Bruce Engelke -- all of Sutherland; six grandchildren; one sister, Elva Dau of Hartley; and a brother, Robert Engelke of Paullina.

    Warner Funeral Home of Sutherland is in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by her daughter, Harriet (Burnell) Gehrke Deiter of Cuba City; daughter-in-law, Elaine Edge of Fond du Lac; nine grandchildren, Richard Edge of Dodgeville, Roberta (Helge) Helvig of Sandness, Norway, Pamela (Paul) Langkamp of Platteville, Brad (Abby Pryor) Gehrke of Washington D.C., Linda (Eric) VanNatta of Lancaster, Brian (Lori) Gehrke of Lake Zurich, Ill., Wayne (Chris) Edge of Oshkosh, Kathy (Mark) Rosinski, and Susan (John) Hessefort both of Fond du Lac; four step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; five step-great-great-grandchildren; and two nieces and a nephew. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Silas; son, James in 1952; son, Lowell in 2004; a son-in-law, Merlin Gehrke in 1995, a granddaughter, Doris Kay Edge in 1972, and a great-granddaughter, Jennifer Edge in 1988. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at the MELBY-BENDORF FUNERAL HOME, Platteville. The Rev. Tom Noffke will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the services on Tuesday at the funeral home. An Order of the Eastern Star service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the Margaret I. Edge Memorial Fund.

    He was born March 1, 1936, in Darlington, Wis., and was raised on a farm in the Platteville area. He was the son of Margaret Edge and the late Silas Edge.
    Lowell graduated from Platteville High School, and received his Bachelor and Master’s degrees from UW-Platteville. He obtained his Specialist Degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia.
    He married Elaine Haville on May 18, 1957, in Bagley, Wis. They enjoyed 47 years of marriage.
    Lowell taught industrial education for nine years at the Galena High School, Galena, Ill. He then taught for 20 years at UW-Oshkosh until his health forced him to retire. He served in the Naval Reserves for eight years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rites and the Beja Shrine.
    Lowell enjoyed the time he spent with his family, especially his six special grandaughters. He enjoyed people and being with them.
    Survivors include his wife, Elaine; one son, Wayne (Christine) Edge; two daughters, Kathy (Mark) Rosinski and Susan (John) Hessefort; special granddaughters, Heather, Brittany and Megan Edge, Alicia, Kate and Melissa Hessefort.
    Lowell is also survived by his mother, Margaret Edge, Cuba City; sister, Harriet (Burnell) Dieter of Cuba City; sisters-in-law, Kay (John) Klein and Carol Haville; brother-in-law, Jack (Kathryn) McClimans; many nieces and nephews.
    Lowell was preceded in death by his brother, James Edge; an infant daughter, Lisa Anne; father, Silas Edge; sister-in-law, Nancy McClimans; brothers-in-law, Merlin Gehrke and Lloyd Haville.
